    This was one of the funest movies I've seen in a long time. You never know what is going to happen next, and everyone is so serious about it and speak quickly and act well and they are all trying to do the right thing, in whatever way they think is the right thing to do. It's totally hilarious if it wasn't so serious and good :D Thank you so much for uploading!

    Akim Tamiroff endowed the gangster with a lot of depth, the relationship btw him and Anna May Wong was very deep. For a film of that era, there was a great deal of nuance. The subtlety of the word "hostess" by Hedda Hopper was a code word for mistress.

    • @lisashapiro4714

    • @mtngrl5859
      @mtngrl5859 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@rocketscientisttoo Not catty at all, the way Hedda implied in her language was that she didn't believe she was a mere "hostess". Also, Anna May Wong recoiled at the word hostess, so she understood what was being said. Again, it was "coded" language. Typically in films of the 1930's women that were pictured as "mistresses" or "other women" ended up badly in the films.
      I'm a real estate agent & when I sell a home that was built prior to 1940, often there was wording in old CC&R's that are now illegal, that refer that no one of Asiatic or Mongolian races can reside on the property. So, by referring to AMW as a "hostess" it implies she wasn't a "resident" of the home.

    An EXCELLENT film. Might be better known if not for a few points which make it both specially unusual & worthwhile:
    - Its 3 stars (shown in thumbnail) Akim Tamiroff, Gail Patrick, & Anna Mae Wong were usually confined to supporting roles in class-A movies. (Tamiroff notably in "For Whom the Bell Tolls.")
    - The plot lifts the lid on insidious ties between organized crime, high society, & govt.
    - Wong gets a rare chance (for any Asian actor in that era) to shine in a deep, dramatic performance: even while portraying just the sort of woman who would usually remain silent, invisible, & one-dimensional in films of that time.
    (Major trivia: Gail Patrick would go on as a pioneering female producer behind TV's dominating "Perry Mason" series: which employed many film noir veterans.)
