Thank you for posting this educational video. My Spanish ancestors came here in 1565 so the cross of Burgundy has some meaning to our family. I fly one next to my U.S. flag out in front of my home here in Florida. I love when someone asks me about it so I can use it as a teachable moment. I have one additional comment about your video. On a recent visit to St. Augustine I visited the fort and the national parks rangers there give a talk about the flag and the current Florida state flag. The way they explained it, the red cross was added to the flag to honor the Spanish heritage and there was some debate in Tallahassee as to whether they should use a traditional cross of Burgundy or a simplified version in the form of a simple red X. The way they tell it, the simpler red X was chosen because it had a more modern streamlined look. Neither they nor the docents at two museums in St. Augustine who gave similar talks mentioned anything about any confederate symbolism in the Florida flag though I have frequently heard that said by non historians.

nunya biznez That's excellent that you've been able to trace your ancestry to the 1500s and I think that's great that you fly the Cross of Burgundy flag and share its history. I have yet to visit St. Augustine myself, but hope to in the future. Thanks for your comment.

Wanderlust: Travel, History, & Science There is a tourist attraction, I don't recall the name but if you to to the fort and look towards the old quarter you will see a wood tower that's about 4 stories tall. It is on that attraction's property. They have a nice gift shop with a lot of nice old historical Florida flags though I think in light of recent flag controversies they may not today have all they had last December. In any case, within their outdoor museum they have a board walk with a bunch of historical flags hanging. I think they call that "Florida Under Seven Flags" but obviously they are leaving some flags out. Check it out if you go, they have a lot of demonstrations of things like black smithing, leather work etc. Oh and you've got to visit the fort itself. That will take over an hour. Between those two things, if you're taking kids it will take most of the day. The pirate museum across from the fort is good but it is more for kids than adults though worth while. They have real pirate treasure on display but I doubt the authenticity of the so called pirate flag. Take some of what the resident pirate says with a grain of salt. I was disappointed by the extreme commercialization of the old quarter. One of my ancestors built a home for his wife there over 200 years ago and they have turned it into a souvenir stand. It should be a museum. Breaks my heart to see all the old historic buildings used to sell souvenirs. But the museums are worth while.

Annie Garcia God bless you. The color white doesn’t indicate race. Please remember that when looking for prejudice, you will find it. When looking for kindness, you will find it. People only see what they want to see...or what their personal pain colors for them. Let’s heal together

Florida seals should do some changes and add a bold eagle by the right side meaning that Florida is now part of the US and on the left side add a lion with the crown meaning it’s past European colonies from Spain since St. Augustine is the first city in the US to be colonized by the Europeans

No…its a representation of the Spanish St George’s Cross, and was added 35 years after the Civil war ended as not to confuse it with a White Flag of Surrender. Please Stop interjecting your lack of History into History…not sure why people feel the need to perverse history…but please just stop. Thanks.
