I really like your push for more personal responsibility in online media engagement. Of course these corporations need to be held accountable, but we as consumers also need be aware of how this ecosystem behaves and how we can be more proactive in engagement with it. Great conversation, but still interesting to see how yalls perspectives differ in this generational gap, we need more voices like yours for our generation Jules
It's crazy to me how many high profile guests she is able to get with a relatively smaller channel size--and I mean that as a compliment. This channel will blow up!
This was an interesting conversation, but at points it was also very hard to listen to and cringe. Especially the parts when they touched on politics, Musk and Tucker. Lorenz just can't hide her dislike for the right wing and conservatives, and will use every opportunity presented for a jab at them - Tucker Carlson flopped hehe xD. Based on what? You don't even know his goals to be making a claim like that. Furthermore, Taylor is throwing big statements without any supporting evidence. Who are the "many banned citizen journalists" that Elon has banned? I did a quick search and couldn't find any names. She brings up one example - the flight tracker. Which, in my opinion, is very disingenuous, and we see the host was also not fully in agreement, " Though I do have mixed feelings surveillance wise." Is there a targeted flight tracker for Soros? Gates? Bezos? Beyonce and Jay-Z? Don't think there is. "He does not support independent journalism. He does not support any form of journalism." Another example of an outrageous claim. As for the host, Jules, I think she did a good job asking interesting questions and subquestions, but failed at giving a pushback. The example with a plane tracker is the most obvious and already mention. I feel she will learn and grow more confident with time. I see potential in her to do good.
Totally get your feedback. Because I don't have my own studio and can only afford to rent others' for one-hour timeframes right now, conversation gets a bit rushed in hopes of hitting the wide range of topics I wanna get to. Unfortunately, this disincentivizes going deeper + giving pushback. As long as this is the case, it likely makes sense for me to pivot to having people on for 1-3 topics rather than trying to cover the breadth of their work. Working so that in the future I can have my own studio or rent others for longer to have those 2-3+ hour conversations with no constraints! Thank you for your thoughtful comment - super constructive.
Like a lot of people I’ve been pausing to really consider what this fundamentally transformative space that has opened up with these platforms as someone never particularly active on social media. Thus Lorenz’s (and her book is wonderful) and Jules’ work has really been insight to me. One thing I find most interesting around this generational tension now around social media is that whenever I turn around the conversation and ask someone older “Well, how do you think TV constructed your identity and how you relate to the world?” there’s a blank stare. That is, what I notice is that the new extremely online generation is debating and understand the effects of these things on their cohort. Whereas older generations often operate under the illusion of being part of some prelapsarian moment of time. Each generation is defined by its relationship to a particular media. For all the mis and disinformation out there and need for regulation I find these new spaces much better than what came before.
Such a great interview, such high quality video from you Jules. I was wondering why you don't post you tiktoks on shorts, it would probably help (to some extent) views and growth on the channel? or do you see the outcome of that growth as too short term?
Ephemerality is the worst thing created by snapchat and other social media ... You'll realize that when you lose a family member or a friend ... or when you're in a nursing home.
This was such a lucid, refreshing conversation. I don't know why the algorithm blessed me with recommending your channel-but I am glad I am here.

Why does she remind me of Louis Litt from Suits? 😭
