I thoroughly enjoy that Nick is a fully fledged train nerd and can comfortably pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
does that mean I'm a train nerd? 🤓
Insane job nailing that name like nothing! Yup, choosing such a long name for the station to attract tourism was such a genius move. For those who don't know the story: The original name of the medieval township was Pwllgwyngyll, meaning "the pool of the white hazels". Pwllgwyngyll was one of two townships making up a parish. The parish name was recorded as Llanfair y Pwllgwyngyll. The long name was supposedly contrived in 1869 as an early publicity stunt to give the station the longest name of any railway station in Britain. The name was created by a local tailor, though we don't know the name of said tailor.
This form of the name adds a reference to the whirlpool in the Menai Strait known as the Swellies and to the small chapel of St. Tysilio, located on a nearby island. The final -gogogoch (red cave) on the other hand was inspired by the Ceredigion/Cardiganshire parish of Llandysiliogogo, rather than by any local features. But get this, the story of this place gets better. In 2020, a new species of bacteria was discovered from soil collected there, and they named the species....Myxococcus llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogochensis. Brilliant.
You and Nat compliment each other so well in these videos and hopefully the two of you will do more together
Agreed!!
Truly don’t want to make comparisons as everyone is unique, but this video really does remind me of Geoff+Vicki videos back in the day!
6:10 i would have got angry with that passenger boarding before letting people off.
The planes are probably from RAF Valley on Anglesey... :D
“Would you like to go to Dublin?
Err it’s a bit expensive”
Have you not yet discovered the RailSail ticket? Could have been a cheap addition!
To be fair we also didn’t have time, we had to get back 😂
Im so surprised you managed to pronounce something i cant evan remotely think of spelling
Easier to pronounce than spell ngl
It took me just one week for me to learn how to pronounce the entire name
Ikr
I can't ever recall any of the Sprinter families having a smoking section
Regional railways banned smoking a long time before Inter City.
How many times did it took to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch? Great video Nick and the last time I was in Holyhead I was travelling along the North Wales Coast Line behind a Steam Locomotive
Took me a grand total of one time 😛
Got younger me to thank for that for getting very bored one day in high school 😂
That's how I learnt it! @@NickBadley
And the thing is, that's not even the longest place name in the world! There is a hill in New Zealand called Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu which has 85 letters in its name compared to Llanfair PG's 58. But not even the hill in New Zealand has the longest place name when you consider the ceremonial name of Bangkok...Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit. This name means "City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Vishvakarman at Indra's behest". However, most Thais just call the city Krung Thep.
The name Anglesey itself is thought to have come from a Viking place name. Derived from the Old Norse, either Ǫngullsey "Hook Island" or Ǫnglisey "Ǫngli's Island". No record of such an Ǫngli survives, but the place name was used by Viking raiders as early as the 10th century and later adopted by the Normans during their invasions of Gwynedd. Before then it was referred to as Mona by the Romans, referring to the Celtic word for mountain, the same etymology that gave rise to the Isle of Man. The Welsh call the island as Ynys Môn.
Enjoyed! It brought childhood memories back of holidays on Anglesey.
I have many fond memories of Holidays in Rhosneigr with my grandparents, staying at the Hotel which was owned by a family member. The moment you showed the square and the corner shop I smiled with memories of running up the hill to get ice cream or drinks.
Excellent really enjoyed watching it.
Point to Point idea:
Teignmouth - Tynemouth
Mill Hill East (London) - Mills Hill (Greater Manchester) - Mill Hill (Blackburn)
Brilliant video Nick, nice to see you managed to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, I really want to be able to pronounce that place really good. The stations along this line do look like heritage railway stations to be honest, I'd love to visit them someday. :)
to be fair, heritage railway stations would probably be busier
your pronounciation of "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" was quite smooth
Point to Point idea: Charing Cross London to Charing Cross Glasgow. Great video and great to see Nat.
The station with the longest name is definitely the best of the lot and I even came to visit there two months ago
Looks like you had fun.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch...
That's quite a long station name! 😂
These are my stations wooo, valley rocks ^^
When I went there I went to a lovely cafe which is actually seen at 4:43 in the video
wow... you actually got the name right! I'm impressed
When if I go out on a train I leave my house normally at 4:43 in the morning every Saturday
Nick knew it was his moment at the beginning.
Bodorgan station is actually only 2 minutes away from where I live
I’d like a ticket to Llanfairpwllderyk - Llanfairpwllderish - Llanfairpwllgwerych - oh, bugger it! I’ll go to Merthyr Tydfil!
Even the subtitles are confused about that station at the start
all the stations in Anglesey looks amazing & peaceful brilliant vlog
The airport that you can see at rhosneigr is RAF Valley, so that’s why there were so many planes
Nailed the long station named station pronunciation
I was laughing about the station you was in about how long is that nameb
A good place to go is Gilfach Fargoed in Cardiff that's in the middle of nowhere
If you fancy some nature walking, the island has an abandoned line that last I saw wasn't too destroyed some parts are but a lot if still pretty good. Might be a fun video, and full of North Cymru villages.
Good vedio nick
I went to (insert long station name here) in 2021 when it wasn't getting a service due to COVID (or some other excuse along those lines) - I'm glad it's getting a service again and still as quaint as ever!
0:05 is good
swear down nick likes nat lol
Amazing video! Your concepts are so out there but amazing!
The planes were for training for the RAF
When you spend your entire career building up to 0:05... that's it, all downhill from here
I think the planes are pilots training from mona
Even I can't pronounce the long name in wales
RAF Valley is a big Air Force training base. It is also the commercial Anglesey Airport but unfortunately it’s one service, a twice daily flight to Cardiff, was cancelled due to the pandemic and the Welsh Government, who subsidised the route, are not restarting it 🙁
Indeed
I don't even know how to pronounce the long station name in Wales. I just call it Llanfair.....
Nick just to let you know Northumberland Line is re opening in 2024 known as the Ashington line.
Hopefully we’ll be visiting that as I’m at Durham Uni so pretty close during term time!
I expect you never been to Derby Road in Ipswich
Only Nick could nail Llanfairpwll and butcher the rest of the (welsh) names 😂
Glad to see the return of Nick's random wanders/walks....we used to call it pathage back in the day!
0:06 have you been practicing to say that so fast?
Planes - you failed in your research, RAF Valley is or should be - on your itinerary! (it was!) I've been to Holyhead several times behind heritage steam, and driven there many more times, going scuba-diving!
Exploring small villages, good? I couldn’t agree more!
Great video. I still need to visit Ty Croes and Rhosneigr. Done the rest.
Nice vid. For anyone wanting a laugh (or more likely a groan), see 9:14.
Should do Pembroke to Dover ,hull, Horsham ,cairnryan , Holyhead
Ports by tail?
Heysham to Hull should be a interesting one fairly sure there's only one train a day out of Heysham (the ferry port for the Isle of Mann)
RAF base on the island.
You wondered what the planes were doing... My guess... they were flying!!!!
Bodorgan and Ty Crowe are some of the worst steps down
Holyhead is a very strange station layout. Platforms 1 and 2 are connected by that building (which has been shut for years), the tiny carpark with the clock in the middle, and also via a new-ish bridge across the water. From Platform 2 you can access Platform 3 and also the ferry terminal. The whole thing needs a bit of sprucing up.
The main reason for the layout is that originally the ferries to Ireland tied up in the middle, with one platform either side of them. I recollect that the evening boat from Dun Laoghaire was met by connecting trains to both London and Manchester, meanwhile another train arrived from London to connect with the return sailing to Dun Laoghaire. I used these a lot in the 1970s when my parents lived in Ireland and cheap flights hadn't yet been invented. The ferries were not car ferries, and the connecting trains to/from London had a sleeping car which I occasionally used. The boat trains were packed, the ones to/from London were called The Irish Mail because they conveyed mailbags which were put on the ferry.
@@Clivestravelandtrains must have been much smaller boats in those days
@@qwertyTRiG Like I said, they weren't car ferries so they were of course smaller than the ferries of today. Called the Cambria and Hibernia.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Hibernia_%281948%29
Originally the ferries sailed right up to the station so you could get off the train, cross the platform and get on the ferry. Hence the unusual layout. This was still the case in 1970, but had changed by the late 1980's.
Next Video: Say Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatah
Thoughts on Bangor Train Station as presumably you passed through? simpliest city centre railway station in the country i reckon as its literally Platform 1 = Out of Wales , Platform 2 = further into wales
We didn’t actually, we we’re staying in a cottage in Anglesey which we drove to as it wasn’t near a station. And then drove to LlanfairPG to start the video
@@InkItOut you should visit at some point, its a really pretty station, its just bizzarely big for how little traffic it really gets
I was here in 2019 visiting from Australia. I still couldn’t pronounce this name even after practicing it for weeks prior!
Thoroughly enjoyable, as usual. It's really generous of Nat to bring you along and I guess she made you practice how to say the name of that station before letting you loose on TH-cam. Keep up the good work, Nat!
Yeah it was nice to have Nick on as a guest, I reckon I’ll have him on more! 😂 (don’t worry I won’t be taking over his channel quite yet! 😂)
I'm not worried, Nat! When (not if) you do take over his channel then you will get my Patreon cash. Until then make sure he keeps you in food and drink on your travels. As far as I am concerned you are a top level Patreon perk, never mind all these early released videos.
Really enjoy watching your videos Nick! Those aircraft are mostly training, from RAF Valley not too far away
Nick your near to RAF Valley that is where the aircraft are coming from. 4:54
Love the class 153 units TFW have, it’s not great when there’s 2 of them on a Manchester to Cardiff set though!
Especially when the timetable is timed for a 110mph class 67 set and then the train turns up as a pair of 75mph 153s hence why they're constantly late
Tbf it's better than getting a single 150 cos 153s are longer
Gosh! I can't believe how fast and well you did it to pronounce Llanfairpwll in a single attempt! I've enjoyed this vid quite a lot. Cheers!
0:07 or Llanfairpwll for short
Gotta flex y siarad Cymraeg
The Middle of a 153 is the cab as the 153s are single car units.
you speak WELSH VERY WELL
Love all your videos!! ❤️❤️🙂
I really want to visit Wales!
Going back to 2017. Geoff Marshall and his companion Vicki who made All The Stations went there and I was surprised that Vicki actually pronounced it perfectly. I definitely would like to go there.
mmmmbye! I still remember pulling into Holyhead platform one on the last train of the day a little before midnight a few years back, and waiting three hours on the floor of the station building for my ferry to Dublin. Back then it was a tired formica-and-lino place with chipped red benches and a little shop, but nothing much else in the way of services. Looks like they might be freshening it up? That'd be nice :)
Amazing video as per usual! All the planes flying over are from RAF Valley.
Re the 153s, I think a trip to Oban on the Highland Explorer might be fun to give you 3 plus hours of 153. The one back at 05:20 might mean you have it to yourself! You'll need to bring a bike. Could be combined with a ferry trip or two.
I wouldn't think of the steps up to the train as brilliant because they do seem like a massive pain in the arse for wheelchair users et al. Do you have any idea how they make a vague stab at accessibility or do they just tell people to take a bus?
I never thought of it as a publicity stunt which is still working to this day, but it is a very good way of thinking about it.
