    It would be nice to see this line made into a excursion, but who knows? Great video. Have a nice day 😊

    Excellent video as always Railrol! Florida’s west coast has a large population in its own right. I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing Brightline come to an arrangement with the Seminole Gulf like they have with FEC! I also wouldn’t mind seeing the Seminole Gulf providing intermodal and auto rack service. Near the current end of this line there is a Cemex plant that is practically begging for rail service! We can dream!

    Old 41 was widened to 4 lanes around 2007 so that’s probably why the rail near the crossing was manufactured around that time. I think this line’s last customer closed during the 2008 recession so it’s been out of service for about 15 years. So unfortunately, this crossing equipment only had a year or so of activity.
    They took the gates off for one of the hurricanes a few years ago and since the line is out of service, they never put them back on. I suspect the pedestrian gates were left because they are shorter and wouldn’t be as vulnerable in wind.

    I used to drive through Bonita Springs once a year on my way home from staying at my timeshare on Marco Island. The crossing on Old US 41 hasn’t seen a train in years. Bonita Springs has a pretty little downtown with a short little passing siding that I always thought would be a great place to park a private railcar and maybe make it a permanent dwelling!

    Man, the memories of watching your videos kicked in. I’m back watching your videos! Its truly sad to see a crossing left rotting, at least better than taken off I suppose

    Looks like the track age and crossing equipment was upgraded very shortly before being taken out of service. Even the relay case doesn't look very weathered. With the pedal gates, if the crossing should activate for some reason, people could easily walk around them, but if the road gates activated, it could cause a traffic jam. I am sure that that is why they were removed. Hopefully this line sees service again

    Interesting that they kept the pedestrian crossing on but took it out for the traffic. I like how the crossing mechanism is attached to the cantilever.

    Like U mentioned Hurricane Ian may possibly be the reason the Grade crossing Gates are removed. They might have been torn partially off and they removed the remaining parts. Or they may have removed them before the storm to keep them from becoming projectiles. The Pedestrian Gates may have been deemed to small to worry with. The Ballist movement is almost guaranteed to be a result of the storm either from the Wind or Water or a combination of both. The Rails did show signs of usage a lot more recently than others you have shown us in the past. Just guessing here but, Ian may have destroyed the customer that was using the line last year. All the vegetation you showed definitely could be could be a result of lack of use since just prior to Ian. Great Vid nonetheless 🏆👍

    This track will now become a rail-trail. The bridge in Ft. Meyers has been fixed but this segment below Alico Rd. has been sold to the trail people.

    Such a shame this is abandoned, those tracks are fairly recent laid. Would it make a for a tourist train? Don't know the area but it could make for popular excursions with some tidying up of the shrubs,

    Wow that's crazy I wonder if they are going to make that line into a rail to trail for people

  • @gravelydon7072
    @gravelydon7072 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you will find that that rail was not made in 2007. Reason being is that if it was, then it is some of the worst rail ever made. kedwards is correct about when the road was redone, that would mean that the rail saw only one year of use. Rail does not deform that fast on a straight line run. What you are looking at is likely June of 1907 rail. Or possibly June of 1987 rail which the rollmark was damaged. Bonita Springs didn't get a railroad till 1924 so that rail was likely in another location and put there as a relay rail.

    Thank you for sharing. How far south from Fort Myers does the track appear to be active still? I think they still run their Murder Mystery Trains. Also I have not heard if they were able to bet the bridge into Fort Myers fixed or not. Does anyone know?

      @@alwhalen3488 Sad that they had to sell it, but better a trail than lost complete. Some day it will be needed again, asuming the area is not underwater in 20 or so years as some say.

    It looks like this crossing has not seen a train in years and more than likely it will not see one for quite some time. Does the Seminole Gulf Railway have any current trackage that produces revenue currently? It seems that all the Seminole Gulf Railway trackage that you have shown us recently is abandoned.

    • @kedwards4377
      @kedwards4377 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The line further north is still active but freight service south of the Caloosahatchee River is not operating due to the collapse of the bridge caused by Hurricane Ian. Seminole Gulf’s popular Murder Mystery train is back in service running from Fort Myers on an abbreviated route which is the only activity south of the river currently. They are rebuilding the bridge and expect it to be back in service by the end of the year. Before the storm, freight trains were running as far south as Alico Road near San Carlos Park. But track to Bonita Springs (where this crossing is located) has been out of service since around the 2008 recession.
