  • Vomits, by the incomparable Gary Karr, is the flagship exercise in the Double Bass world. It exercises right hand bow management during slurred shifts, ear training, and left hand precision and balance. Part 2 of a 2-part series.

Isn't it funny that one of the most Incredibly Useful Exercises is also the most annoying one for family and neighbors? Thanks Dennis!

Thanks a lot, but that seems to be a little bit too advanced to me... I'll focus on the first part to not get too frustrated and try the second part from time to time ;-)

That's exactly why I created the first three sections - I saw a lot of people get demoralized from trying the full one. Definitely work on the first octave until it feels easy. Even just the first octave is so helpful for people. Have fun Stephan!

Is it important that this exercise starts on Bb? Why not on A? Curious if there is a particular reason for that.

It seems to me that's because Bb is the lowest note on the G string that one could play with any finger. You wouldn't play A with 3 or 4...

I start on the Bb so that I can play my 4th finger on the lowest note.. That's the only reason. If you only want to exercise 1st finger, then you can start on the Ab or A. This exercise is ultimately customizable, depending on what part of the fingerboard you want to explore.

Why does Gary name this vomits?

I'm not sure exactly how it was named that - I imagine he was playing it in a workshop, then he or someone said the slide sounded like vomits, and it just stuck. If you check out the comments in the Vomits part I video, the Bornoff institute just pointed out that it was originally a Bornoff exercise, and Gary used it in his workshops. It's an unforgettable name...
