As much as Steven jokes about the "fix it in post" meme, there are many, MANY CGI companies that are going bankrupt in Hollywood while the very movies they worked on are raking in billions for the studios. One well known example is that while the cast of Life of Pi was up receiving an award for the movie, the company that worked on the Tiger (one of the main characters of the story) was undergoing bankruptcy proceedings caused by that very movie, despite Life of Pi making 600 million in profit.
Forgot the channel but a respected channel just talked about this in depth recently. I assume Steven saw it, it's truly awful how our digital creatives are treated in the industries.
Are they deliberately signing contracts that are underpaying them?
@@leowzhilin Obviously not. You can find the information about this issue and how it happens very easily. It is impacting a very large portion of CGI artists/digital artists and companies.
@@leowzhilin I'm not super familiar with the issue myself, but in an effort to keep costs really low directors and studios have been contracting out VFX work to areas of the globe where producers can get tax credits and labor is simply less expensive. This means that VFX studios like Rhythm and Hues (the studio going bankrupt), who are based in Los Angeles, are finding less and less work available-- and the work they do find and get paid for ends up mostly going towards trying to just keep the lights on, let alone paying their employees. Even when a movie they worked on rakes in a ton of profit, very little of that cash actually makes it back down to the VFX teams; VFX studios generally aren't unionized, so many wont try to push for a higher paying contract for fear of the potential job instead being offered to someone else halfway across the globe who are willing to work for cheap.
@@azurblueknights hey I completely uds this dilemma. This is happening in many other industries as well. In mine too. I used to work in the Interior Design industry. & the local talent here has to compete w cheaper foreign talent migrated here, fr 3rd world countries who're happy to be paid less to do 12h/day work everyday for 6d/wk. It got so bad that our govt has to put a quota that for every _ foreign talents, u have to hire 1 local. & we're not even talking abt companies outsourcing/contracting the work to 3rd world countries when we're trying to meet deadlines. Those guys get paid even less, & have no benefits. By far the most exploitative model. I have a feeling this is happening in all creative industries. Talent market is cutthroat. We just can't compete. The more we compete, the more we drive each other to an early grave.
