- TWO broken snubbers in five minutes, is that a record? In this video we offer some advice on how to anchor, specifically on how to use a snubber with a rolling hitch.

I wonder how you choose your music? Do you decide what the story will be then find music to fit or the other way 'round? Keep up the great work!
How many hours per day would you say (on average) you spend in filming and editing? :-) Whatever it is, I'm thankful. One of my top 3 sailing vlogs by far.
Internet connections? What do you use? What percentage of your time do you have a connection?
If you can include a section on managing stock footage, importing stock into the editing suite, archiving and back up.
Liz your lovely smile makes me smile. Was so glad to see the rain on the video, I dream of being on a boat and it raining for days. I love it when it is raining because it makes me feel clean and peaceful.

I've been using that hitch for a year and a half now and it never failed me. Then again I've never been in 40 knots at anchor yet.

[Liz] Millie became the size of a football (soccer ball to our American friends) when we left her in the marina for a few weeks being looked after other people -- all she did was eat all day! We've been trying to slim her down ever since, but it is a long and gradual process! :)
It's been a at least a year now, and Millie is Rounder now then she was in this video. 😆

Hi guys, great fun as always, cheers. Have you heard of a "Kellet" ? I first read about these in Beth's Leonard's voyaging book. Then i saw them again on the "commutercruiser" web site. I am looking to get one for my 40 foot Norseman. Is on the list at least.
[Liz] I had to look it up and found a few articles which don't fully endorse the use of a kellet...here's one: kb.rocna.com/kb/Kellets_and_buoys I think using a good anchor (like our Rocna) and setting it properly are the most important aspects of good anchoring technique. Easy to say, of course, but not always easy to achieve! Let us know how you get on with your kellet. Peace and fair winds!
"That was rubbish." Ha! Love it. I enjoy opening Google Earth to look around when you guys talk about islands as you visit them. Questions - The 30m contour you used to avoid fishing - if that depth or distance from shore? On the rolling hitch snubber - is the thought that the long snubber lead allows more slack in the chain that helps to ease the shock on the longer 3-strand?
The 30m contour line is the depth, PNWesty. It seems to be a universal cut - off point for many local fishing boats. The longer the snubber, the more stretch so the less strain on the bow as it snatches in the fetch.

Great advice on the snubber - what diameter warp should I use ?- I have a 41ft Oceanis. And shouldn't there best be two? Thanks!!
How many feet of chain do you have for your anchor? Do you ever use anchor rope or just chain? What is the science to it in your opinion?
Hi +Sailing With Vampires. We carry 100m of chain and no rope, which is more common with smaller and/or lighter boats. If you use rope you'd still want at least 10-20m of chain at the anchor end. We also carry 100m of rope should we use a stern anchor.
What editing software are you using and how easy is it to use? can you use subtitles or have the ability to add them in
[Liz] We use Premiere Pro. Yes, you can add subtitles and do a lot more than that. We're hoping to put together a vlog about how we make our vids. Peace and fair winds!

The opening scene of this video was paused on my PC for a moment as I lite up a cigar and it struck me as quite reminiscent of Queens' Bohemian Rhapsody. The two of you being of the quirky sort I fully expected you to break out in to the song.

Well you absolutely nailed that video, new camera or otherwise. I cannot think of a better channel to demo a how to vlog teach in than FTB. BTW when Casey Neistat is asked about the best camera he says 'the one you have with you' - he has high end stuff but does a lot of his stuff on phones. Look at this video which he claims was shot entirely on a Samsung phone ( dunno about the drone shots tho') th-cam.com/video/V8mUeGa3HEE/w-d-xo.html. His point is its not about the gear - it is all about the story. FTB always tells a great story.👍⛵️
[Liz] Love Casey! I've seen him say that before, it's all about the story and we couldn't agree more. As a writer, I'm always looking for a story and the best narrative to choose. Pretty (moving) pictures are nice, but they need context. As for equipment, it helps to use the best you can get your hands on!
Hi Liz. You know that is not a rolling hitch right? It's a stopper hitch. You are using the correct hitch on your chain but the terminology is wrong. The stopper hitch is primarily used on commercial vessels when transferring a multiplait mooring line from a winch drum to a set of bitts. Maintains the tension in the mooring line when taking the turns off the drum end and making fast the mooring line. Just saying.......

When the snubber line snapped? Can you tell us the approximate depth and the anchor line/chain to depth ratio? I will usually use a 5 to 1 unless things are getting rough and windy and then move to a 7 to 1. (S/V MAGIC 50' Gulfstar Ketch)
Hi John. We never put out less than 35m, even in 5m of water. We've been known to put out 10/1 before now but we aim for 4-5/1 scope.
Good to know...helps keep it in perspective. I have anchored in some pretty brisk breezes but not in a combination of wind and waves to need to calculate the Bounce/Stress factors... Love watching your journey as it unfolds.

I have been doing that method but when the wind is a little gusty and coming from different sides, the snubber line does a lot of pressure in the hull (just the bow) dont you have that problem? Is better to tie the snubber to both hitches? Port and starboard?
Our snubber is only ever tied off on one side. It goes through the fairlead and over the metal plate that is fitted to the edge, where the deck meets the topside.

Have you tried putting a loop of chain behind the rolling hitch before it comes back to your way windlass? I've found it acts just like an anchor angel.
[Liz] No, haven't thought about that. At the moment we're happy with the current system and wouldn't want to introduce any more chain because we already have so much at the front of the boat. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it mind for the future. Peace and fair winds!
Hi Jamie and Liz just a quick question ha ha. insurance for the boat and yourselves for travelling around the world , and which companies are better than the others.
also what coverage of insurance
[Liz] Esper is insured for total loss and third party damage. We use Top Sail insurance. We don't have medical insurance, just repatriation costs on our boat insurance.
Jamie mentioned that he ran the water maker for 9 hours. That seemed to be about a day after that big drenching. So my question is, do you have a water catchment plan to use instead of the water maker? Seems you could have filled up the tanks from just that one storm.
+Andrew Barron [Liz] No catchment system apart from buckets. When we upgrade the sprayhood/Bimini later this year we may be able to install one. It would be in addition to the water-maker, which we would never want to lose.

By the way kids, I am working on a sail purchase from Zoom Sails thanks to your recommendation ! They seem to have a decent sail cloth - "Dimension Polyant AP Blade", 9.6 oz. I have a Norseman 40, with 50 foot "I" dimensions. Thought briefly about Hydra-net until I saw the price. Keep up the good work.

Is it just me or is this the rainy season over there. Seems like a lot of squall over there.
[Liz] Haha! It was a mixture of sea and rain, and I had to hold on tight with both hands when the bow dipped below the water! It's pretty much always rainy season here. The SW Monsoon has kicked in, but we are experiencing typical tropical weather right now: hot all the time, with intermittent strong squalls. You get used to it!

Hi guy's, This is in relation to the flashing lights that I noticed on the stern of the yacht that anchored beside when the snubbers broke. I also noticed that you guy's had one on the stern of your yacht. Does this replace the normal anchor light?

[Liz] When we arrived in SE Asia we noticed everyone had these disco flashing lights on at night, which we thought looked awful. It was only when we met yachts who had been crashed into at night by fishing boats because they only had one masthead light on that we decided it was a good idea to follow suit. Locals don't look up in the air for lights, so you need to ensure that the deck is well lit at night. Peace and fair winds!

Am so enjoying these latest videos; seems you're back into more cruising, less repairing. Particularly enjoyed Penang (want to take the kids there once we cast off) and the extra special rolling hitch lesson. Looking forward to the gear and editing episodes. I always get a kick out of watching your aerial shots knowing that we have the same drone. I had a minor crash a few months ago, sent it in for repair and got a new drone for $200 (USD). Now I have the insurance plan. Can't wait for the editing lessons. Fair winds.

Just curious about your fuel burn on this passage...70 nm and running water maker while motor sailing , just curious of your approx fuel consumption on this trip once you left that anchorage in early dark hours
When viewers start asking about what gear you use, it is because you are doing a really good job. I'd take that as a big compliment.
As for vlogs about building vlogs then definitely do at least 3-5 episodes; capturing video (hardware), capturing audio (hardware) and then putting it together (software). bonus would be to know how you handle the pre- and post- of each video. everyone has a style/technique/process (or lack there of) and we all learn from one another.

@@followtheboat Just a thought because I saw people putting two special made snubbers on: Could you also fold the warp in half, tie the hairpin end onto the chain as if it was one line and then you would be left with two ends of the warp--one for the left cleat and one for the right one. Would that be extra security or is there a problem with this approach?

Don't forget, Will, that doesn't always update in real-time. If we don't pass a port of entry or an AIS base-station it may not pick up our current location.

That time lapse at 9:43 was soooo cool! Great video. I really like the new camera quality.
We're getting there with the new camera. Tweaking bits here and there. Time lapses are still done using the GoPro but the GH5 does do time lapse, which would be far superior in quality.
The opening frames bring back memories of a Phil Collins video. Cool.
