This is what I've been doing for a month and it seems to work..I was using Niacinamide with retinol at night but it was too strong for me, so I alternate for 3 days each night before exfoliate (pm1 or 2):
AM-Micellar water, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic acid, Moisturizer, SPF
PM1-Micellar water, Cleanse, Tone, Retinol, Hyaluronic acid, Moisturizer
PM2-Micellar water, Cleanse, Tone, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic acid, Moisturizer
EXFOLIATE-Micellar water, Cleanse, Exfoliate 10mins, Hyaluronic acid, Moisturizer..every 4 days..
Over 40, normal to dry skin, not acne prone, hormonal acne as of late and old dark acne scars
TY ❤ Cleanse with Cerave foaming, tone with Mario B, SPf is Cerave and everything else for now is The Ordinary ...also Aha/Bha was too strong, I use salicylic acid masque

I like the glycolic acid solution...but I started with it once a week....at night....i find it safer to use acids at night to avoid any irritation during the day...even if one uses sunscreen....then I continued twice a week ...and now that my skin is used to it three times a week....still only at night...after that usually a water based serum and finally a moisturizer...

Thank you so much! I was using the glycolic acid with CeraVe foaming cleanser and pm moisturizing lotion and my skin would get irritated. I think that the niacinamide in the CeraVe products were conflicting with the glycolic toner. I’m still using them for my AM routine because I didn’t want to waste and the irritation is gone now. My skin is oily/combo, pretty clear with minimal issues other than dullness around mouth, acne during period and a faint acne scars.

    - poc skin, acne prone, oily but currently biggest issue is hyperpigmentation
    AM
    -purito defense barrier
    - alpha arbutin + very little of 100% ascorbic acid powder mixed together
    - light moisturizer
    - sunscreen
    PM

      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey😊
      Thank you!
One question for you, have you already bought those products?
If not, I recommend getting Mandelic Acid instead of Glycolic Acid, which is a bit gentler and penetrates slowly into the skin + exfoliates the skin. Glycolic Acid may be too strong in the sense that it can also create discoloration if used too often/for too long.
I’m not 100% sure about the mixture = Alpha Arbutin with the Vitamin C powder. Either mix the Vitamin C Powder with Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3% or just use Alpha Arbutin and one if the Vitamin C serums like: Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% (can also be used with Niacinamide) or Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution (do not use with Niacinamide).
Also, you may want to start slowly with either Glycolic Acid or Mandelic Acid + Azelaic Acid.
I recommend using them at alternate evenings before using them in the same routine.😊
Niacinamide can be used in conjunction with retinoids, sunscreens, hydroxy acids, and other ingredients without concern for cross-reactivity.
Either way, please always do a patch-test on your upper forearm area before using it all over your face.😊

@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet I already had the glycolic acid and 100% vitamin c powder but purchased Niacinamide and Alpha Arbutin a week back so was thinking of incorporating it in my routine.
I used to use the Glycolic acid in conjunction with Azelaic acid but recently I figued out that my skin is not able to handle it well like before so will definitely use it alternatively!
And yes after I'm finished with glycolic acid I'll shift to Mandelic acid or BHAs for exfoliating and I'm wondering what to do with the 100% vitamin c powder now as I haven't been able to use it much 😔 but will definitely perform a patch test as you said to see if my skin can handle Alpha arbutin and vitamin C together 😊

As for a gentle cleanser...Cerave (Hydrating or Foaming Cleanser), Cetaphil (Gentle or Oily Skin Cleanser), The Ordinary (Squalane Cleanser), Neutrogena (Hydro Boost Cleanser).

Well, it basically depends on you...when choosing Ascorbic Acid + Alpha Arbutin (use after your water-based serums), you have to use it separately from Niacinamide as Niacinamide shouldn't be used in the same routine with pure Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid). And it's like a two in one in a serum.
Or you choose Azelaic Acid which is like a cream and should be used after your moisturizer, or skip your moisturizer in the AM and/or PM.

      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

No, Azelaic Acid isn't. And maybe Salicylic Acid. The higher the pH and the closer it is to the skin's pH, the better it can be tolerated. (According to what I have read) But when I record my videos, I usually include them all to avoid people from mixing them so that they do not get skin irritation. :)

@@sgirl119 Well, that's the question when you look online. It seems to be between 3-4. But I couldn't really find a reliable source for this. And it may be individual depending on the skin type and needs.
Paula's Choice, for example, says that you are OK to use different acids in the same routine.(www.paulaschoice.de/en/the-difference-between-aha-and-bha-exfoliants)
The Ordinary just says strong acids or their direct acids to minimize irritation.
But generally speaking, Azelaic Acid is well tolerated, and Paula's Choice even includes it in their Azelaic Acid Booster. Sadly I cannot give you a correct answer for this 😞

Suppose you haven't used any acids before no. In case you are an experienced user, maybe. You are using three acids in a row, which can be very irritating, depending on your skin type.
I recommend splitting the routine like this:
      AM:
      SA Cerave Cleanser
      Azelaic Acid Suspension
      SPF
      PM:
      Gentle Cleanser
      Glycolic Acid 7%
      HA Moisturizer
How often you should exfoliate depends on your skin type and skin concerns. Some people do well exfoliating with AHA or BHA twice a day, whereas others find that once a day or every other day is a perfect balance. Test to see what works best for your skin.

Hii, i have combination skin and am also currently suffering with acne. i have a few ordinary products but i don’t know what regimen for am and pm would be the best.

cerave: SA smoothing cleanser and foaming cleanser, facial moisturising lotion spf25.
the ordinary: the buffet, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, glycolic acid, caffeine solution, granactive retnoid 2% emulsion, azelaic acid, aha 30% + BHA 2% peel solution and natural moisturising factors.
i would really appreciate if you helped and guide me with an am and pm routine as i have these products but some are not to be mixed and some are. thank you so much! you’re amazing 💖💖

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey😊
      This would be the routine:
      AM Routine:
      - SA Cleanser
      - Caffeine Solution
      - Hyaluronic Acid
      - Niacinamide
      - Azelaic Acid
      - Moisturizing Lotion with SPF
Buffet has conflicts with Vitamin C and Acids (like Glycolic, Salicylic and Azelaic Acid). So, if you want to add it into your routine this is what it would look like:
      AM Routine:
      - Foaming Cleanser
      - Caffeine Solution
      - Hyaluronic Acid
      - Buffet
      - Niacinamide
      - Moisturizing Lotion with SPF
Personally, I don’t like Buffet as it broke me out a lot! So, I recommend not using it until your skin has cleared up so that you can see if your skin likes it or reacts to it. Otherwise if you have already breakouts it’s difficult to tell from what it is coming from.
      PM Routine:
      - Foaming Cleanser
      - Glycolic Acid
      - Caffeine Solution
      - Hyaluronic Acid
      - Granactive Retinoid in Emulsion
      - (Optional) Moisturiser
If you are new to Glycolic Acid and Retinoid, I recommend using both 1-3 times per week at alternate times for a while so that your skin can adjust to it and then slowly introduce them in the same routine.
How often you should exfoliate depends on your skin type and skin concerns. Some people do well exfoliating with AHA or BHA twice a day, whereas others find that once a day or every other day is a perfect balance. Test to see what works best for your skin.
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar. It is not be confused with other acids like salicylic or glycolic acids, which exfoliate away dead skin cells.
PM Routine 1-2 times per week:
      - Foaming Cleanser
      - Peeling Solution
      - Hyaluronic Acid
      - Moisturizer
Please do not use the Peeling Solution and Glycolic Acid in the same routine!
The general rule of thumb for order of application is:
      1. Water-based serums
      2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations
      3. Lotions & Creams & suspensions
      Important:
If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first). And it’s recommended applying eye-serums (such as Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG) first after cleansing.
It’s recommended using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration.
About 2-3 drops of each serum and 1 pea-sized amount of creams should be enough for the full face and neck.
Use a "patting" application method, as opposed to "rubbing."
Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!!
With any new formulation, some sensitivity or initial redness can be normal. Initial redness upon application is not a cause for concern if it goes away after a few moments. ❤
Niacinamide can be used in conjunction with retinoids sunscreens, hydroxy acids, and other ingredients without concern for cross-reactivity.
Please note that with any active ingredient that affects skin behaviour, there can be an initial purging period during which breakouts are normal. Gradually incorporating one new product into your regimen at a time and applying test patches first to see what works best for your skin.
Also, if you are still suffering from acne, you may want to look into Benzoyl Peroxide, Zinc or Tea Tree oil as Niacinamide is not an acne treatment!
      Hope this helps!🥰

      Hey😊
Well, you may get breakouts from Niacinamide or Glycolic Acid, however, with any active ingredient that affects skin behaviour, there can be an initial purging period during which breakouts are normal. Trying test patches of each new product first will allow you to identify whether you are sensitive or intolerant to a particular formulation.
I also recommend using Niacinamide only once per day (in your AM) (at the beginning) and then once your skin has gotten used to it, you can use it 2x times per day.
You can use Azelaic Acid in your AM routine, before or after the lotion if in this case you still would need it!

The routine is good, and the order is correct. It's a powerful toner, and Glycolic Acid often leads to stinging or burning if you have sensitive skin. It may get better after a while but generally not. You still can try it a few more times, but if it does not stop, I suggest switching to Lactic Acid or even Mandelic Acid instead since they have larger molecules and do the same job but do not burn on the skin. And l have used The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% previously. l have watched your previous video of how to combine those two. I have dry skin, can l combine these 3? so Natural Moisturizing Factors after Niacinamide.

Is it okay to put adapalene cream on my acnes after using this glycolic toner and niacinamide serum?

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I recommend keeping them in separate routines as it can lead to irritation when using them together. Also, the frequency matters to avoid irritation.
So either alternate between them in your PM routine or use one in the AM and the other one in the PM.
You can use Glycolic Acid and Niacinamide together and Niacinamide and Adapalene.

Hey😊 so you have a combination skin? What other skin concerns do you have?
You can use Niacinamide daily AM and/or PM, however, I recommend using it at first once per day then see how your skin reacts to it and if your skin has adjusted to it you can use it twice per day!

What kind of acne scars do you have? Dark spots? If so, they fade naturally over time, but you can accelerate it by using exfoliating acids and alpha arbutin. But apart from that, it depends on the hyperpigmentation you have; if you have Melasma, you need medical treatment if not, it should show improvements with the products you have :)
