I was always fascinated by the fact that he gently says, "Sister, you're having an asthma attack." Who are you and what have you done with the cynic?
She accepted House's "diagnosis", even though He went with "I'm smarter than You lot" delivery with It, and thank Him for It.
Also, House thought (at the time) He was the one that made Her having an asthma (either by the drug or the misdiagnosis). So He felt sorry for His "mistake".
Yes, He's rude. But He can (sometimes) still admits when He made a mistake.
House doesn't typically rail on people for believing differently from himself unless it's useful or relevant to the situation or conversation. i.e. a stubborn patient refusing treatment/lying etc. He can actually be very kind. He just won't go out of his way to spare your feelings while he saves your life or wins an argument. He's callous, not vindictive.
I think that’s mostly because it was the beginning of the show. Later on, he would make fun of people even if they were dying in front of his eyes
Stress can make asthma worse, relaxing can make it better. Witty remarks would make her feel worse, better to try and keep her calm.

Being a cynic doesn’t mean you are necessarily heartless and cannot read the atmosphere of the room. As a doctor, it was in his best interest to be gentle at that moment, so he acted accordingly. House is, first and foremost, a brilliant doctor, albeit a bit harder to understand at times.
This is the nicest I've seen House be to a patient.
He was also nice to that severely autistic child who had worms in his eyes.
He had to, since she was having an asthma attack

99% of the time House is an a-hole, but he takes about 1% of patients very seriously and is, actually, really kind to them. I love seeing him like that. How gently he treated the woman was so cute. And it was just little things too. When he goes in the room he usually makes some judgements of them but he didn't say anything. When she said she's couldn't breathe he didn't hesitate he ran over, even with his leg. When she fainted, he gently caught her and laid her down while yelling for help. He rarely does that but that's the House I love.
The people less likely to lie he cares about , I like how he can switch so fast

Even if he acts like he doesn't care we all know he does.
One of my favorite scenes is the patient the mom who had the baby and then tried to smother him with a pillow because the "voices" told her to. He was talking with Foreman outside the room when he noticed the baby carrier was empty. He said "where is the baby? " and then he sprinted into the room so fast and pulled him out from the mom's arms. He threw his cane and practically jumped through the glass door to save the baby.
That episode was really good not only because it was interesting but it showed a lot about House's and the other's true character. The baby died and Chase was trying to save him but unfortunately he died and he felt terrible, obviously, but House made him do the autopsy and the other tests needed. They eventually found out that the baby had celiac disease and no matter what they did he was going to die anyways, proving that it wasn't chase's fault. House made him do it so he could get over the grief and guilt he had for the baby.

I'll add to this: House always cares about his patients, but he hates/dislikes liars and idiots. Liars make the treatment difficult, idiots waste his time. You can see from many clips, like this one or occasionally from clinic duties, that when the patient isn't annoying, rude, impolite, asking stupid questions, etc., and answers directly to House's questions, he takes them seriously, and kindly. Plus, whenever a child has a problem, he never roasts the child, but the parents.
I think its about how genuine and truthful they are with him. Its why hes pretty good with kid patients, they havent really learned how to lie (and especially lieing about for the reasons he hates) and are often genuine with him. This nun and a couple of the crazies in the series get a similar soft touch from him.
As a neurology nurse I learned long ago that when someone complains about an odor, I always ask what type of odor. Smell of sulfur, eggs, flowers, etc are common aura's that happen before a seizure.
If only nobody had "ralphed" then they might have gotten to that diagnosis quicker.

Great observation but it probably ended up on the cutting floor. You know the sponsors(commercials) demand blood (a joke) for the money they shell out for the right for us to see these shows. A great observation though, my sister was a nurse anesthesia for 32 years, she would remind us about all of those pitfalls in life.

The last part is House testing his team's resolve. House doesn't want a team who only parrots his ideas. He needs a team that would not be submissive and instead, do the right thing even if it contradicts the head's idea. That creates a team dynamic where every step is correct even if the leader is wrong.
"What are you gonna do about it?", even in mocking tone, is him saying "Do what you think is right."

I love this episode. It really shows how people are so much more complex than just their occupation or history or childhood. Everyone is equal, and everyone should treat all others with respect

She makes me think of my mom, my mom is a very religious woman but is also smart, she doesn’t understand when people deny treatment saying “god will heal them” in her words “maybe god’s miracle is giving people the knowledge to cure people” (slightly paraphrased so it makes more sense, we were having a conversation so the direct quote would sound weird in this context)
I like that view. I don't really believe in God, but if he exists and makes people sick, i'm sure he also knows about the possible treatments and survival rate of the illness. If he is all powerful and wants someone to die, then he can do that. Either by accident or quick death, or by an illness that isn't cured despite treatment. If chemo or some lighter medications helps and you think god wouldn't want that (for whatever reason someone might believe that), then you basically think the medication is more powerful than God or that God, despite being all-knowing, wouldn't have seen it coming that the meds cured you.
I don't know how to phrase it the way i want to, I'm not a native speaker and im kind of struggling with my english today lol. But it basically either feels like you think god is dumb or something or like youre purposefully defying his will (Even as an atheist, thinking that God would want you to die of an illness that he knows can be cured feels like you're defying him and not thinking good of him. Like you're waiting for God to cure you with a miracle while literally ignoring the miracle of modern medicine.. Idk you think that humans could just stop his will like that, the will of an all-powerful and all-knowing being.. It feels disrespectful).
As a Muslim, we're not supposed to just believe that God is just gonna heal us magically. He has His ways with the universe, and one of those ways is through getting proper medical treatment and also making dua (supplication). Back in the day it was herbs and other resources to heal the sick, now its more advanced technology and drug medications. There's no guarantee they'll heal you, that's why you supplicate. He's the Healer, but if He wills whatever medicine can cure you or it may not work, it's in His control.
Reminds me of that joke about a woman who died because she ignored three rescuers. When she died and went to heaven, she asked God why he didn't rescue her and God said: "I've sent three and you ignored them."
My parish once said "We asked for a cure for diseases and god gave us scientists to create the cure for us" that's during the height of the pandemic BTW.
Wilson's 1:50 "...ooh boy" is too funny, even knowing House for years, he still surprised by extent of his sarcasm.

The actors that play the sick patients on House always do an excellent job. It’s not easily to portray a convincing seizure. Yet every week one or more seizures are displayed. Judo’s to the patient guest stars.

The animations were taking up like half the budget so they stopped doing that in later episodes. It may not look as flashy as a marvel trailer but it's equally as expensive to produce animation like that, and ye, house didn't exactly have the budget that marvel does...

please, do not become a rude and cruel healthcare worker, in Turkey we are troubling with doctor shootings, and seems like no one is sympathetic for them because they (healthcare workers) are extremely rude. I don't support the shootings but i understand why people are reacting this way.

So I just watched this episode and a large part of it revolves around the possibility that House accidentally grabbed a syringe with an incorrect dose. How can they not tell which one he gave by the discarded syringe? Are they not labeled or color coordinated? Or even possibly 2 different sized syringes? I have no idea how much 1 cc is as far as milliliters or whatever, but we are talking about a dose that is literally 10 times the amount of the other. Is the amount of liquid in the prefilled syringe really the only visual indicator to tell the two apart? It just seems like it should be pretty easy to tell what dose he gave her
Hmmm…Haven’t watched this episode but when I’ve seen hospital staff administer injections for allergic reactions (for myself and others) they had to fill up the syringe themselves (therefore measuring the dosage out themselves). The syringe and needle were than disposed of (sometimes in trash bens shared by several ER rooms-which aren’t always room rooms.). I suppose the quickest way to see if she has too much in her body is via bloodwork?

They had a system to check how many syringes they had but it was pointed out it’s not always marked down especially by House
In most hospitals, all needles go into a 'sharps' container. Basically a special garbage container that ONLY has used needles in it and is full of all the used needles that have accumulated since the last time it was emptied.
Why would they even have syringes with 10x usual dose?

When House wants to leave because of “laziness” or not caring, I imagine that’s the “The lord works in mysterious ways” to prevent him from staying extra late because of an emergency.
If you would watch the full episode you would find out that the cause of her condition would have killed her if she left without treatment. So no, it wouldn't have worked

Everyone comments about how nice House was here. House is always nice to patients who are legitimately sick from no fault of their own stupidity. That’s his pattern.
Foreman, dude, you are nuts. Hyperbaric Chamber is actually a great treatment for those who do have autoimmune diseases. It's been proven countless times. Yes there are risks to every treatment, but the chamber has helped many people with their autoimmune issues like with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and have been exposed to high amounts of mold or other possible allergens especially if the patient becomes very sensitive to the treatments from steroids.
Maybe those precedents hadn't yet been set? I mean, this show's older than I am.
Do you know what mixed connective tissue disease is? The ones I know of are EDS and Marfan syndrome which are not autoimmune but genetic disorders
@@alenkaart8480 I have EDS, and apparently there's a number of doctors who have ordered hyperbaric for other EDS patients in the past depending on the situation of course.

I remember it was something to do with a copper IUD that she had put in years ago and forgotten about. She developed an allergic reaction to copper because of it. The reaction on her hands was because she was washing _copper_ pots
But the special tea she was drinking also played a part.

We cleaned it up but-“ seems like a continuance of a different episode where a woman with a rare tumor was supposed to get the same test done but they weren’t able to because foreman said she “threw up as soon as we got her in”

She had an IUD when she was 15, and had an abortion. Somehow stayed inside her as well as imbedded in her body so it cant be detected. She ended up being allergic to copper. Every time she ate out of the copper pans she kept getting worse and also coming in contact with it
House MD is one of the best medical series I have watched, Hugh Laurie is at his best. The episode titled 'Autopsy' is amazing!
Funny. This is the 2nd Judeo-Christian Religious figure that I've seen Elizabeth Mitchell play.
She was also a Pastor in The Expanse.

I remember the miracle one where the woman come back after he turns off light support.
That was interesting as she'd come all the way from Cuba. House normally takes all the weirdest cases in New England and a couple celebrities.

Well, idk how it works, but I don't think you want to actually make House do a proper Chest compression in acting... since the actor doesn't really need it and... it will- yeah... I mean sure, they could replace the patient nun with a prop body and House can properly crush it, but that's gonna be difficult to edit.
In some cases where people need chest compressions to be resuscitated, I’ve heard ribs can get broken with the amount of force applied. They were probably just worried about hurting the actor

Religion is indeed wonderful because it inspired nuns to build and staff hospitals across Canada and the US, making them possible in small towns by working for subsistence.The first hospital in the city I live in , Victoria BC, was started by nuns. Wow, they used straight diphenhydramine as an anti allergen? They sell it over here as an OTC sleep aid medication. I know Benadryl is a mix, but just straight, it can cause rashes and heart palpitations in people who are sensitive to it

I feel like the nurses in this hospital don't want to help people at all. I remember one episode with the guy with the parasite that had a heart attack. When his wife called to a nurse to help, the nurse just fucken noped out lol

A lot of people are bringing up how House is so polite to the nuns, enough to even call them “sister”. I never really thought about it before but that IS interesting. Makes me wonder if his mom and/or dad were religious and taught him to treat nuns with a level of respect when he was young. That could’ve stuck with him and he just continued to do so subconsciously. Though I’m also inclined to believe that House is an amazing character for so many reasons, and one is that he’s a lot more caring and respectful then everyone thinks.

I once received epi in the arm at an urgent care clinic. I'd had happen many times by that time and ot always sucks. In my case its usually it's given with an autoinjector in the thigh at least once prior to medical treatment. Sometimes they have auto injector sometimes syringe. I've had both in the leg. And had it given IV. I only remember the arm once. It was horrible horrible horrible. It always made my muscles ache and hurt. Especially the leg given.
I don't know of it was because there just isn't as much mass in the arm or the doc hit a nerve or what but that night was the worst. I don't think I've ever cried from pain as much for anything.
But. ... I didn't die. So.... there's that. 😆
(I was hoping to avoid epi altogether and the ER knew me all too well and gave epi when I'd walk in the door lol. - idiopathic anaphylaxis sucks).

Only for beginner doctors, advanced doctors can read the pulse better as the stethoscope is attached to their necks, it's actually more accurate because our necks have more nerves than our ears and it's faster at penetrating the blood-brain barrier so it's far less prone to error by at least 3 fold...
