  • Last week, we played Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony. We joined rehearsals, chatting to Double Bass Co-Principal Sebastian Pennar and Principal Trombone Mark Templeton about their favourite moments. Mark also tells us why the piece has him singing the lyrics to ‘You Are My Sunshine’...
What are your favourite moments of the symphony? And have you ever added lyrics to a classical melody? Comment below 👇
Mark Templeton’s chair in the Orchestra is supported by William and Alex de Winton.

My favorite Dvorak Symphony!😍. I love the great orchestra outbreaks in the first and the last movement and the lovlyness of the second and the dance-feeling of the third movement 😁. I've heard the first minute in your video. I quickly falled in love with the symphony! Thanks for this😍!!

Conductor Estrada compared The Scherzo of Dvořak´s 9th to Beethoven Scherzo 9th. But It seems that the rhythm of Dvořak´s Scherzo of 7th is also a little bit similar to Dvořak´s Scherzo of 9th symphony. But in 7th the rhythm is lighter and slower, like some waltz. In the 9th it's tadadam tam-tam, tam-tam tadadam....In 7th it's like ta dam tam.... tam-tam, ta dam tam...tam-tam.

Conductor Jakub Hruša wrote on facebook: "This part about Dvořák´s 7th. "Even the masters of masters sin - and (as far as I know) consciously! 😄
What a beauty - against the rules!
    Dvořák #7, 2nd movement"
It seems more composers were doing mistakes on purpose as David Hurwitz said also Beethoven did maybe to tickle the string player.

So even though the concert has been performed in London looks as if there is a further rehearsal in Brighton?

That’s correct - although as it was a repeat of the programme it was a pretty short rehearsal. (Mainly just to get familiar with the acoustics of the venue.)

I love hearing the player’s take on their favourite bits, it’s something to listen for that adds to the experience. More please.

The Dvořak´s 8th last movement rhythm reminds me a bit of the last movement of wind serenade rhythm or also the Water Goblin has a similar rhythm.
But it's hard to analyze it because the rhythm shows in 8th only in some moments and is followed with various complicated melodies, rhythms. Dvořak´s 6th is also great mostly the last movement.
