I love the new key change. I'm also amazed Bono sang the song half a step down from the studio version for 35 years straight even tho it was pretty much at the top of his range. Belting out the chorus "it's true it's true" with allot of power. But with the song now a full step down he can sing more in his range and really sing the song to it's full potential. So yeah this performance is amazing! And they took it to a new level.
U2 has always been of my favorite 80's band. Hard to believe they've been around for more than 35 years. If I am not mistaken, they made this song way back in 1981. Holy cow! Where have all the days gone? :)
@3:55 Happy New Year's! Maybe the time is right, maybe tonight, hoping there's a change finally, things change I've learned albeit slowly... on New Years Day✌💖😄forever
mad probs to U2 and the edge for playing the piano parts live onstage. For a while there U2 actually had a studio keyboard player who was backstage/ below the stage performing all the key parts. granted he was totally credited for his work... if you look at live videos from atomic bomb era, the live keyboard performances are there but no one is visibly playing them onstage.
XentziS you’re misunderstanding me. Yes the song is originally played in E standard tuning (EADGBE) but i think they tuned down to DGCFAD which is D standard.
Rishem Bhogal I absofuckinglutly love this song in this key. It adds a level of urgency and darkness, as if to sneer the idea that nothing changes.... yeah, love it.
I love U2, I've been a fan of them since I was 4 years old. I remember the first time I listened to them was when I was at home and I stumbled across a DVD that my Dad had of the U2 Elevation Tour show in Boston. I watched it and instantly fell in love with U2. I listened to them so much that I kinda ruined them for the rest of my family, oops! But I think Bono's lost his touch. I don't blame him, he's been singing for over 40 years, but because his vocal range has narrowed, it takes away the energy from some songs. New Year's Day was made for E Flat, nothing else. So when they drop in down to D, it takes away the energy and impact of the song. I still love U2, but they need to drop some songs and leave them for the history books. Other songs like Bad were designed for E Flat, but they dropped it down to D, now Bad isn't as bad (no pun intended) in D tuning as New Year's Day, but I still think it should be dropped from setlists just because it was made for E Flat, not D.
Okay mate I think your the 1 who needs to calm down cause 1 I was being serious, I was just asking if yous seen them because they are really good and 2. Not once did I say anything that could have been interpreted as serious.
Oh yesss, im from Argentina and i went to the recital in this tour. Amazing, U2 and the crowd, all singing the song at the same time, magical! Bono's voice is still intact (Sorry for my english haha)
I couldn't agree more with you, some people think that they are going to hear just the guy next to him singing, but on the concert you can't even hear your own voice (except if you really want to be heard and scream all the songs).
This song was inspired by Solidarnosc anti russian and anti ZSSR (USSR) movements in Poland at that time, in 1981 r. , tried to be repressed by enstabilishing a dictaturship guided from Gen. Jaruzelski under the command of Soviet governement and ready to oppress on any opposition protest movement, as usual. But the Polish people together won, DEMOCRACY won, and Russian tyrant was beaten. Viva Polska, forever and ever 🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱 Great U2.
Bono needs to retire. His voice just doesn't cut it anymore. Shame. This song should sound like a battle cry and it just sounds like he's bored with it.
From this Irish American lad God bless you U2. Your music will live forever.🇮🇪🇺🇸
This song is so much more melancholic in this key.
I love the fact they did the album version with the 3rd verse.
I love the new key change. I'm also amazed Bono sang the song half a step down from the studio version for 35 years straight even tho it was pretty much at the top of his range. the greatest thing about u2 is that you have great vocals AND GREAT Guitar slings!!! thanks U2
Anyone notice that this is the first time they play the whole song live? (they never played the third verse live)
This was also the first tour they lowered the key
Can you explain more
This is a timeless song... Fan since 1993.
New Years Day 2021

1/1/2019 Happy New Year! I hope everyone has a terrific year full of happiness and blessings.
I am glad they have brought back the last strophe "and so we´re told this is the golden age..."

They just celebrated 40 years as a band!
Actually they wrote New Year's Day in 1983 ;)

that's still the case but not not during New Year's Day (New Year's Day's piano has always been played by edge)
i want someone to look at me the way bono looks at the edge
I've never heard this song in this key before... ITS COOL!
But does anyone know what it is?
Rishem Bhogal Its in F Sharp minor, its original key is G Sharp minor.
XentziS i would imagine if they’re playing this song a whole step down from standard, then tuning is D standard.

@@metallifan84 The song was originally played half step down, so he's probably tuned Db
★★★★★ ♥
Long version! (L)

wow a 4k black screen :p
RKeeR1 you not watched the other videos, extraordinary visuals
Christopher Durant it's just a joke
Christopher Durant hey man cool down it's just a joke, and yes I saw them and their great. why everyone takes themselves so seriously
Okay mate I think your the 1 who needs to calm down cause 1 I was being serious, I was just asking if yous seen them because they are really good and 2. Not once did I say anything that could have been interpreted as serious.
Christopher Durant It's ok man I wasn't trying to pick up a fight with anyone. Peace. Have a nice and happy day
The audiences of the rock shows of the United States are horrible, in South America the fans sing all the songs
As an American, I agree with you.
You and the Brits have the best Rock bands in the world, I just think the audience could be amazing as their bands
I want to hear Bono singing and not the wrong singing of some drunken jerks around me!
Oh yesss, im from Argentina and i went to the recital in this tour. Amazing, U2 and the crowd, all singing the song at the same time, magical! Bono's voice is still intact (Sorry for my english haha)

What happened to the video portion? Sucks.
anglo tienes la coma justa.
Nice vid but why would you record Bono standing still instead of the solo?
I had few options of what to shoot from my vantage point behind the redzone with all the people wandering back and forth.
You had it on Edge for the piano part leading up to the solo then switched to Bono when he started talking. Would've been better to keep it on Edge.
I have perfect pitch and i think they tuned the song down of what im hearing
Yeah they did, from how it sounds it seems like they tuned it down a whole step
Yup g# to f#
exactly

Wow. This is dreadful.
Rusty Shackleford not much energy
They’ve just been doing this for a long ass time. Bono might not be in his prime but I say he, Edge, Adam, and Larry still got it.
@@jasontodd42 "doing it a long time" usually means they'd be better at it.
