Man, Jimmy and Shelly. What a team. I feel like I can hear Jimmy’s Brooklyn bark seeping into Tom’s attack on the vocals, pushing the Southern boy to be more aggressive. I also love Shelly’s humble approach, to always be in service to the song and to the session. He was doing amazing things, using years of experience and his talent for homing in on a sound, but he did it knowing that it was really about helping Tom or Stan or Benmont play and sound their best. Thanks for decoding a great song and a great session. Too bad we couldn’t hear it through the Trident!

Damn the Torpedoes is such a great album! IMO, it kicked off the 80s. TP&TH's sound was so appealing. It still sounds great. In addition to Don't Do Me Like That, Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid), Even the Losers, Here Comes My Girl and Refugees are all Classic sounding songs! Incredible for 1 album!

This sits at #1 on my all time best recorded songs ever. When I heard the song originally, I wondered how they were able to get such explosiveness between between the bass drum and bass guitar without distortion. My first thought was that the bass guitar was run into the key input of the compressor for the bass drum. With the compressor setup for ducking, the bass drum could accentuate the bass guitar each time it was kicked giving a nice tight vibe. This was a technique used back in the day. What I am hearing from this engineer goes much further than the smoke and mirrors I just mentioned. This engineer is brilliant. This is. the result of a plan coming together from knowing where the band was going and following through. A no compromise attitude and never saying that's good enough. Incredible to hear how this song was produced. Thanks!

That album is one of the best things ever committed to tape. There's good reason Shelly's name is writ large on those record sleeves. It must've been amazing to be in the room with people like that doing their thing at that level and nailing your part of it.
These breakdowns with the engineers allow us to taste just a little of that, and THAT is the goosebumps and lump in the throat stuff for me, so thank you, Warren and Shelly.
Perhaps Shelly could clear something up that there's conflicting answers to on the internet: Who is that saying "It's just the normal noises in here" before Even the Losers?

    Warren, These interviews are GOLD!!
And, Thank You for properly caressing the ego of these Recording Geniuses. They deserve it!! It is what most of us would be doing if we were able to meet them and spend time such as this. The bands were able to get their praises and accolades from their live performances, etc... These Engineers help create and secure the premise and foundation for the success and prominence of these Great Recording Artists. Unfortunately, they are often the overlooked and forgotten necessities behind the phenomenal successes of these artists.
Without these Engineers, I doubt most of these bands would have been as notable. Music, Songwriting and Recording is truly a precarious art form. It takes real knowledge and understanding to facilitate great recording and capture it properly to tape / disc. Yakus's genius is captured well in your questions and snippets of recordings.
I GREW UP with these songs!! Listening to them and being inspired by them is what made me a songwriter and performer!! Many viewing these videos could say that, as well. ("Here Comes My Girl" is still a "go-to" mix / audio reference song when I am testing studio sound equipment. That drum sound is just the epitome of sound engineering perfection.)

I’ve been looking forward to the next Shelly Yakus instalment; it didn’t disappoint. Shelly, man! That guy’s focus is a testament to why such albums stood out as landmark productions; Hat’s off to Jimmy O, of course, but there’s something about the craft of engineering a great record that needs a shout out. A toast to Shelly! What was particularly memoray-jogging for me was the gig I saw 2 years earlier than this LP release, at Birmingham Town Hall (UK) watching the band; me a 15 year old kid, pressed up against the stage desperate for a fix of ‘ginuwine’ American Rock ‘n Roll, even though Punk was lapping my heals, telling me, 'this is old hat'. Mike Campbell’s E-bow intro to ‘Fooled Again’, the stage lights during the song ‘Luna’ I tapped out a rhythm on Tom’s cowboy boot and at the end Benmont handed me his can of Coke. It was hot, it was cookin’ and it was real. I would eventually come back to appreciate more of what the band was, but that gig, that 1st album, that truly helped drive home something about music that has stuck to this day. Keep ‘em coming Warren. Cheers mate

The capstan/puck trick was a stroke of genius ...brilliant! Absolutely love when you talk to Shelly, so much rocknroll history here! Bravo!
I'd love to see any track by track that involves Joe Barresi, that guy gets the best guitar sounds, they sound like they're literally alive and breathing...

I love this song and Tom Petty’s music in general. So glad I got to see them play live! Really enjoyed this video!

Not only are your Inside The Song videos the best thing on youtube, they should be a freakin HBO series. As a musician and songwriter and producer myself, I'm transfixed!

I still think this is one of the best produced/recorded albums ever. Sound City just had some magic about it - and obviously these engineering techniques. Well done!

i wish we could’ve heard the Vocal Track isolated on the chorus part where Tom , for whatever reason, yells out, “WANHH!,” or “WANG!” that part always gets me.

That was fantastic. One of the best records of the era and my personal favorite. Shelly is so chill and laid back. Thanks for this work Warren.

This is a great interview. Just heard the story of Shelly taking Stan out drum shopping from Stan himself. Sweet story from Stan. I wonder why Jimmy rode Stan so hard? It wraps the music like a warm coat in snowstorm. Love the bleed. I love it when all the tracks bleed.

I get such a kick out of the joy you show in these, as though it's a Christmas morning revisit where you unwrap a favourite present all over again, but in the company of the toymaker.

@@Producelikeaproit wasn’t. Name escapes me but the guy may have even been sleeping (or they thought he was, something like that), he picks his head up and says what about that don’t do me like that song, I like that. So they gave it another listen. Tom tells the story in the running down the dream documentary and it might be told again on the inside the album of damn the torpedoes
