I always had two questions. First, why didn't Peshwa or Raghunathrao himself go on the Panipat campaign? Why did he send Sadashivrao Bhau? And the second question was why the Marathas did not fight with guerrilla tactics. This video answered both of my questions. The animation was once again top-notch. Well Done Historiography Team.👏👏👏

I would say the campaign was doomed from the very first day. Sadashivrao Bhau was a young, fearless warrior, but these two traits were not enough to excel against Abdali, especially on regions like Doab and Delhi where the politics became complex after 1750. Maybe Raghoba Dada caused too much debt for Maratha Empire from his previous expeditions, but he was shrewd enough to understand the overall power equations at North. He should have led the campaign this time too. Plus Bhau was carrying too many non-combatants, thereby slowing down the troops' movement and stretching the rations. If he would have followed the tactics of Peshwa Bajirao 1 (India's greatest cavalry general), the Maratha Army, sans pilgrims and women, kids, could have moved quite faster a connected with the Holkar and Shinde contingents much earlier. At that point of time, any military expedition to North was like playing chess, with so many key players like Jats, Rajputs, Awadh and Bhopal Nawabs, Sikhs and Rohillas were not on the same page to protect India's political unity. The key to excel against Abdali was to stitch effective alliances and marshalling the troops quickly between the territories and effecting decisive blows upon Afghans through small, small battles and skirmishes, something which Bajirao used with greater efficiency against Mughals and Nizam at Palkhed and Bhopal. Raghoba Dada was a master too in these methods and instead of taking on Afghans in an all-out battle scenario like the one at Panipat, he could have forced them into submission by using a mix of guerrilla and frontal attacks.

Great work, really appreciate the effort and the scholarship behind this series.
Just a small tidbit; it would be overly simplistic to say that the Maratha Ganimi Kava failed on the northern plains.
One of the things to remember is that Malhar Rao Holkar, and even Antaji Mankeshwar earlier, were always able to outpace and outride the Afghan and Rohilla horsemen. The Holkar debacle was more due to the Maratha troops ending up isolated and Malhar Rao halting for information about a Durrani supply caravan worth some 10 lakh rupees. Otherwise the Durranis had failed to catch the traditional Maratha light horse which was very much in its element in the quick blitz raiding. Durrani both outnumbered and had better local terrain knowledge thanks to Doab allies, and even then needed Malhrao Rao's own fault (in retrospect) to be able to catch him.

Personally I feel the Marathas should have moved on from Sikandrabad and continued their hit and run tactics rather than mount a defense. But who knows maybe there were some limitations.

    Awesome presentation.
Just one correction: Unlike shown in this video, the fort of Ramgarh was not renamed as Aligarh at this moment i.e. 1760 CE or by Abdali.
It continued to be called Ramgarh till 1780s when Afrasiab Khan, relative of Mir Bakshi Mirza Najaf Khan re-captured it from Jats & renamed it Aligarh.

Check Durrani biography by Dr. Ganda singh Page 236-237. It was called Sabitgad originally, then Surajmal renamed it to Ramgad and deployed Durjan Sal. Then Abdali captured it and made Aligad.

      @faujdar021 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Historiography There is no conflict on the point that Aligarh or Ramgarh was earlier known as Sabitgarh upon Faujdar Sabit Khan.
But here the point of discussion is different, I don't know which primary sources Mr. Ganda Singh has referred to for coming to this view but one thing I can say is that Ramgarh was kept knowing as Ramgarh till 1780s i.e. 20 years later than the said capture of Ramgarh by Abdali in 1760 CE.
      1) The theory that Ramgarh was renamed as Aligarh by Abdali doesn't fit on the simplest logic as both Abdali & Najib were Sunni, why would they rename it on Ali (A Shia figure)
      2) Najib's own biography by Nur-ud-din doesn't supports this claim as it continue to use word 'Koel' for this place but never Aligarh.
      3) Even in official biography of Hafiz Rehmat Khan 'Gulistan i Rehmat', this place is always called 'Koel' but never Aligarh is mentioned.
      4) Maratha documents of as late as 1770s show the name of Koel-Ramgarh as unchanged.
Example: A letter of Naro Narsi to Nana Fadnis in June 1770 CE mentions that ''he is currently mentioned at Ramgarh''
      5) As per Najib's biography ''The Maratha camp was pitched in Koel pargana in 1770 & they wanted to control the fort of 'Ramgarh' ''
      6) A letter written by Sadashiv Dinkar (Peshwa's agent in camp of Mahadji Shinde) in August 1785 CE, clearly mentions that ''Maratha commander Rayaji Patil has been dispatched to capture Ramgarh''
      7) De Boigne always mentioned it as 'Koel' & never mentioned Aligarh.
      8) Moreover Tahamas Beg (Born 1738 CE) who was part of Afrasiab Khan's army which went on campaign against Jat Kingdom in 1775 CE, clearly tells the fort was transferred to Afrasiab Khan by the Jat commandant in April 1775 CE & it was renamed as 'Aligarh'
This was the first time the word 'Aligarh' was used for Koel/Ramgarh by any contemporary source.
      9) That Ramgarh was renamed Aligarh by Afrasiab Khan is also proved by Marathi letters themselves.
Sadashiv Dinkar says ''name of fort of Ramgarh was changed to Aligarh by Afrasiab Khan''
      10) Another letter of Govind Purushottam Hingle of April 1785 proves it although he says that ''Fort Ramgarh has been renamed to Aligarh by Najaf Khan''
Actually Najaf Khan had died by then & it was Najaf Khan's follower Afrasiab Khan who was in control of Ramgarh fort & had renamed it Aligarh.

Another important factor was the fueding among some Marstha leaders.
We should remember, they should, they are confronting a dirty enemy who will eat them, if oppertunity is given.
You know the political impsct of the campsign failure in the form of higher % of muslim polpulation in western Up.
The tactical blunder of that war is having ramifications in 21 st century.
