Yes Marathas were defeated in 3rd war of Panipat because Hindus were not united or Indians were not united and now talking about marathas we just say Marathas period end after this war but actually Marathas regain power again in India from Attock to Cuttack and till Tamil Nadu in south and to West Bengal in east and till West in Gujarat. Power transfered from Marathas to British only after 3 Anglo Maratha war in which Marathas were defeated as only Peahwas took part in it and no other Maratha confederacy took part in it. So Marathas were defeated because English were successful in dividing Marathas.
