Question why didn't you try spraying your cabinets and replacing the hardware with soft close it would cost you a fraction of the new one, as well as getting new countertops it's not that time consuming and would yield great results?
Kitchen is looking great... that was a big undertaking! nice use of the temporary ledge for installing the upper cabs.. and I like the cabinet pulls... simple is better.
Swapping solid hardwood cabinets for thermofoil plastic covered crap? Rip out granite for plywood plastic formica crap? The removal and installation techniques were great, which was the purpose of the video so you deserve a Thumbs Up. Putting that sweet Blum hardware on those boxes is like putting a Ferrari engine in a Yugo. I hope you can live with the material choices. Free from Lowes or not, I think you're going to regret this.
I have crappy cheap laminated counters (I rent an apartment so I can't change them) and I can only wish for solid cabinets and granite top in such a great condition as the ones that got removed :/
@Etianen7 Seriously! I was thinking the same thing. I have sh-tty laminate countertops and flimsy a** cabinets, I would kill for granite countertops and solid wood cabinets. The only thing solid wood on my cabinets are the doors and even those are cheap
They really were, I didn't understand his complaints. Mine are all jacked up, with warping under the sink where there was a leak. I would have loved his kitchen
Great video. You have an amazing Father in Law to help you out like that. I’m impressed with all your knowledge from electric, plumbing, and wood working. Thanks for sharing this remodel.
Personally I don't understand the trend of pulling out wood cabinets and replacing with white cabinets. I'm want more wood or at least wood looking everything in my house.
Funny how fashion goes in circles. Back in the era of WW2 mass-produced tract homes, all you got was plain white cabinets - but were thankful for having your own home after the nation had gone through depression and a war. As people prospered in life they upgraded their cabinets from institutional white to a warmer more natural (and expensive) look of real wood. One piece formica countertops were the quality standard for many decades until natural stone became more available. To my eye, natural wood and stone makes a more beautiful, warm, and welcoming kitchen. Funny how now in the popular remodeling shows people show how sophisticated they fancy themselves by being repulsed at the sight of natural materials saying, "Ewww.. how dated!" So, to "update" the kitchen they rip out the expensive natural materials and make it look like a basic tract home from the 1940's. But anyway, thanks for taking the time to make the video and sharing your diy project.
For kitchen and bath cabinets... he's right: It's 'dated'. [Unless, you're going for a country-kitchen sort of vibe. ] It's all preference, of course. ;) /17 years I've worked in over 100 homes a year of many types, 100 y.o. craftsmans, mid-century modern, Cape Cod, ultra modern, etc. Wood cabinets [like that design] are definitely not modern, nor up to date. [edit: unless the wood is book-matched and is cut in a modern style; not showing any of the framing, hinges, etc.]
5:24 watching remodeling shows on TV always irks me when they smash kitchen cabinets for televised fun. Very rarely do I hear someone on those shows say they need to save the cabinets to donate them. Unless they're just *trashed* surely someone could use them for SOMETHING, anything, better than ending up in a landfill. Thank you for making sure to mention you donated yours.
Mike Holmes doesn't play smashy smashy like all the others UNLESS. When I see smashy smashy, I question the integrity of the hosts and the show. So far, they are all nothing more than redecorating shows.
Agreed, I cried a little when they cracked the granite. I think they could have just replaced the doors, painted a little, used drawer inserts, and called it a day.
Not running flooring under the cabinets is pretty common, and in fact is recommended by some manufacturers. If you set a bunch of heavy cabinets on top of wooden flooring, it can restrict its ability to expand and contract with the seasons.
The homeowners could have also wanted a lower countertop without paying for custom cabinets. Standard countertops can be quite a strain for shorter people.
yep found out the hard way my floor was installed under cabinets and it buckled and separated cut it at the face of cabinet no more buckling or separation... that comment of "cheaped out" just shows his enexperience of contracting 🤭
I didn't put finished flooring down first either. Cabinets are in and going to tile last. Not paying for finished flooring under cabinets when it will be out of sight anyway.
We ordered Kraftmaid thru a local company in OKC after getting costs from both big box stores and 2 other local cabinet companies. The local cabinet makers said they could not start until the fall due to doing cabinets for a builder. I went back to local store and changed some things and price came down. Kraftmaid was actually on sell in April when I ordered. Prior to ordering 6-8 wks. Day after we ordered they said 8-12 weeks. They arrived at 8 1/2 weeks. We were pretty sure they would come in less than 12, as we only ordered a pantry and 5 lower cabinets. They were delivered last week and we will do install this weekend. Glad I found your videos as they will come in handy. I had not see the pulls you used on your cabinets. Personally I like the original cabinets better. Not a big fan of white cabinets. We were looking at medium wood cabinets but finally went with a midnight blue. Pretty excited to see it redone. Previous owner had put in 1930's cut down cabinets into a 1955 built house. Thin doors and they had been painted 5 times. If they had been like my grandparents cabinets, I would not have minded. These were thin cheap and done out of 4 types of wood. No backs and shallow. Husband and son in law are doing install then local company will come do the countertops. I would tried to reuse the granite counter tops. Glad you donated them. I see so many videos that they just smash them up. Most could have been reused as garage cabinets.
I know you were sponsored by Lowe’s and need to use their product, but after doing my own kitchen, I have to highly recommend to anyone Ikea’s cabinets. They are cheaper, high quality, 256ear warranty, and SUPER EASY to install. Their rail system makes all that leveling and shimming your doing on each cabinet completely unnecessary. Their online kitchen planner is an easy amazing tool to plan your kitchen, and is smarter than any store employee and will catch any errors made before you buy everything. They also have tons of great features like soft close everything that’s a breeze to install. I never did any remodel or cabinet work in my life and did my kitchen 100% by myself. I really can’t recommend their stuff enough.
I have installed over 75 box kitchen / Ikea kitchen cabinets over the years. We do not have a Lowes in my area but do have Home Depot and Home Hardware stores. These Lowes cabinets ( especially the sink base ) look very well made but I will say that IKEA cabinets are leaps and bounds better than Home Depot and Home Hardware cabinets.
Want to remove stuff from the cabinets really fast? I’ll have my 18mo son come over. It’s easy, you just take a 15 minute nap on the couch and, viola! 100% empty cabinets and drawers!
I enjoyed the video thanks. It brought back to mind the days when I did it for myself many years ago. In my day people would paint over the beautiful brickwork in their houses I guess nowadays they replace solid oak cabinets for plywood and MDF... each to his own.🙂
When my wife & I redid our kitchen we used Ikea cabinets and did it in 3 days.... Including pouring a self leveling floor. One thing that helped was not trying to do overcomplicate the setup and ordering everything you need up front.
Great job Bud!! Once again another great video. Glad you left the mistake in, hopefully it helps someone avoid it. I installed 7 upper cabinets before without allowing the distance at the top for the crown!!! NEVER made that mistake since!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
Formica downgrade from Granite. Can't tell from the video if the granite was in bad shape but based on the rest of the kitchen, I assumed it was all right. I would definitely put in new granite, leave the formica for the garage workstations. That oven probably costs around $3k, so I bet overall you're in the $11-12k range for new cabinet replacements. I just got done putting in a very small rental kitchen with these Kraftmade cabinets from Menards, but mine had the adjustable feet which I'll admit were nice to fine tune for level and plumb.
Completely agree. I know he said that it wasn't just aesthetic reasons for the replacement but in my opinion the new cabinets look like they are from the '70s instead of the early 2000s. What I would have done is just maybe painted the cabinets white and slapped some black handles on them and it would have looked way better than this.
The previous kitchen was nice, with granite and real wood cabinets, If I had that I wouldn't have take them. It hurt to see the nice granite being destroyed.
Yes, I prefer the real wood cabinets to these plywood ones. They are too classy for me to ever remove. But about the GRANITE: it was synthetic false granite; not real stone. So no loss there.
Here I am with a very small area for woodworking in my overstuffed garage, and I'm in the process of designing replacement kitchen cabinets. I'm starting small and doing the three bathroom vanities before the kitchen, with the smallest vanity being the first, to see how they come out. If all goes well with those three, it's full steam ahead for the kitchen cabinets. Makes me wonder why someone with the means to build their own cabinets buys them instead.
He did a cost breakdown in the video, including the amount of time it would take to build the cabinets. The question was answered IN the video. For him, it is not about the money, but about the amount of time he would need to dedicate to the fabrication of the cabinets if he did the work himself. The actual dollar cost of doing it himself would be thousands less, but he is probably getting the cabinets for free from Lowes as part of the sponsorship deal. The math will work differently for you. If you don't get it, watch the video again.
If you grew up in the 90s, oak was EVERYTHING!!! Cupboards, trim, tables, chairs, end tables, couch molding/feet, entertainment centers, living room floor speakers and the list goes on. So yeah to some of us it’s ugly and dated.
Excellent video. So is the double oven cabinet just sitting on its base or did you join them with screws, in addition to the oven cabinet wall screws? Also I will be using adjustable EZ levelers instead of shims due to uneven floor. Thanks.
Really nice job, got lots of tips, fair play enjoyed the video, good working practice and easy to follow, always seems the u.s has a tool for everything that really works well and for the job, 👍🏻, pity the island screw holes were visable, screw head blanks could make them less easier to see. Great job. 👍🏻
Great work. I’m about to do my kitchen with kraftmaid from Lowes. Where did you get that trash can electronic opener? Is that a 96” oven cabinet with the 7” drawer? I order that one and was concerned my oven/microwave combo would have a lot of space between the oven and drawer below and also the oven and cabinet doors above but yours doesn’t. I ordered a Cafe combo oven.
I got the electronic trash can through Lowe's with my same order, it's an option they should have. That wall oven cabinet should work well for you, love these cabinets!
Awesome video. I recently installed my dishwasher as well. It’s difficult to tell in the video if you did this or not. But you’ll want the waste water line to go through a hole high up on the inside of the cabinet forcing the waste water uphill. This is to prevent the waste water from backing up into the dishwasher.
Great video! A couple of options to hide those screw holes on the island would be to wrap the toe-kick piece around the whole island like a low-profile baseboard, then put the quarter round around that...or, wrap the outside 3 sides of the island with an actual baseboard that matches what's in the rest of your kitchen. Either way, the kitchen came out awesome!
I'd of run base and quarter round. The corner trim on that island doesn't fit right to the quarter round, but would fit right to the top of a baseboard.
I enjoyed your video. Love your ability and techniques, but I agree with some others. If you aren’t changing the footprint, there are ways to add modern bells and whistles to older model cabinets such as soft close doors and drawers. I hate all the waste in this world. Disposable society. Plus, I happen to love painted wood cabinets.
What I could see in the video, the old kitchen looked realy nice. With some cleaning and whitening it could had looked better than the new. It would have cost near to nothing compared to renovate the old kitchen. But hey if you got 6-7k to blow, then knock ya self out. I fancy the wood structure and would have lightend it.
I’m having an absolute terrible experience right now designing, ordering, and receiving cabinets from Lowe’s. So I find it hilarious that they couldn’t even deliver your entire order even though they’re sponsoring this video 😂😂😂
I'm surprised you guys don't have adjustable feet as standard on your cabinets, in the UK it's pretty much the norm - made it much easier to level stuff than shims, for me at least :)
Yep. I have Ikea cabinets and their rail system and adjustable feet make cabinet install a breeze. After setting a level line just attach the rails on that line and you don’t have to deal with all of that shimming and leveling mess he was doing. Just quickly get the back to front level with the feet and you’re good to go!
@@darinnetherland3466 yeah, hanging rails or french cleats are great, until you have a warped wall in an older home and have to deal with dips and bump-outs all along the wall. Then the shims are right back in there to support your rail staying straight and tight. In a perfect world with straight and true walls, hanging rails would be ideal. As for the adjustable screw feet, that sounds like a great idea as floors often have high and low spots as well. Thanks for the mention of the alternate (primary, where you are from) method of install.
Thomas Russell true, and I had to deal with that fey situation, but shimming a rail once and having everything hang from it perfectly straight on a long wall is way faster than leveling and shimming multiple cabinets.
@@darinnetherland3466 - Many mass produced / poor quality homes in the US don't have flat floors and straight walls. Additionally, kitchen cabinets were considered a permanent installation that would last the life of the home. Something that is permanent doesn't need adjustable feet. In Europe, it is not uncommon for cabinets to be moved to a new home like all the other furniture. It is a big difference in how US cabinets are made.
Love the video! I hope you have better luck with the Samsung appliances than I did though. I had a Samsung dishwasher for about 2 years before it died and I had to replace it. After talking to some people, including workers at my local Lowe's, I was told I shouldn't have wasted my money and switched to Whirlpool appliances.
Order a stick (maybe 2) of 3-sided solid stock from Kraftmaid, and trim out the bottom (sides & back) of your island with it like baseboard. You'll need to re-cut your quarter round and outside corner, but that will cover your screws. I'd use the solid stock vs a baseboard, to better go with your cabinet style.
Wendi Moskowitz yeah just having the quarter round looks odd anyway. May just make the footprint a little larger, but that’s what you get when you just have to have an island in a small kitchen because all the cool kids have islands.
@@darinnetherland3466 Of course, with the eight foot wall oven cabinet taking away some countertop space, they really do need the island. That kitchen would have hardly any prep space wothout it.
5:56 I am not sure they try to cheap out on the floor ..I have seen other videos, where house are been build, they installed cabinets before the floor, so the installed and nailed ( kitchen island ) kitchen cabinets direct to the plywood floor, and then install finish floor around kitchen cabinets. ..I guess that the way it is.
Interesting to see the differences in cabinets and electricals between the US and here in the UK, though the fitting process is very similar. Never yet seen a plastic construction sink unit, but makes perfect sense given the number of water damaged sink units I’ve replaced!
So, the RTA cabinets that the orange competitor sells are all solid birch cabinet grade plywood, full extendable soft close drawer glides, full overlay doors, euro hinges, and nice factory paint. The interiors are heat applied poly finish. The drawer fronts are beech. Oh, and the drawers are dovetail joinery. Each cabinet takes about an hour to assemble. The quality control is outstanding, with pre-drilled holes matching precisely. I have judged the quality between these and the Kraftmaid, and I'd say it pretty darn close. All of this, plus free shipping your door or inside your garage whatever. The receiving time is roughly 3 days. I got my upper cabinets in 2 days. The price is roughly half of what you paid for the Kraftsmaid. The model is Avondale.
When you calculated your cabinet build, did you include the loss that you took on those granite counter tops? Of course white cabinets are in style, and are actually my preference, but this wasn’t a fair trade off. If you were to sell tomorrow, you lost money on the kitchen. Note: I’m a fan of yours and you do good work. This was a cool project. I’m just into house flipping and critiquing.
Crafted Workshop. I guess it doesn't matter that the uppers are only held with screws if they're going into studs? Anyway, a great video. Before I do this - any idea if replacing old, attractive, but VERY badly designed cabinets and replacing with modern ones - with much more storage, space, etc; will raise value of home substantially? Take care,
Heat the seam in the granite up with a heat gun next time. I makes the epoxy brittle and you can easily separate the seam so you or someone else can re-use the tops.
Nice new kitchen. Looks great. But why would you go with laminate tops? Check out Stone-Coat Countertops. Cheaper than stone, but customizable to what you want and no yearly up-keep. However, if laminate is what you want, go for it. Also, I'd be more than happy with the previous version of your kitchen. I dont know how old mine is, but the house is ~200 years old. We have a manufactured laminate top on one base cabinet supported by angle iron to a hollow corner cabinet. A roll around cart next to the corner frame and wide open under the sink with a plastic shelving unit slid under. There was nothing next to the one base, but I installed an old dishwasher there (to the right) and that brought us 9 inches from the door to the bedroom. The opposing wall has the fridge, an upright freezer, and a 7cuft chest freezer with an open shelf above the chest for out toaster oven and bread box. All Oak uppers, but the microwave/vent hood is only about 13 inches above the stovetop between the corner cabinet frame and the back door. No island. So, I'd be more than happy with your old kitchen.
I can have cabinets with drawers from Lowe’s ? That’s all I saw 😂 I was watching this to go to ikea and buy my cabinets. I’m going to Lowe’s right now. Thanks 😊
It's not cheaping out to not put the flooring underneath the cabinets. No contractor does that. It's a waste of time and money to do and has absolutely no benefit.
@@thomasarussellsr Yep, it's common to put a hardwood floor on top of an underlayer. It allows the hardwood to expand and contract during humidity changes and acts as a thermal break.
Connor Pearson he used those because they were free from Lowe’s. Ikea is a much better and cost effective option, especially for DIYers. I did my whole kitchen by myself with Ikea’s system. I’ve never done any remodel or cabinet work in my life.
Awesome job as usual! I know you dont have the sink and full plumbing done yet but did you put a highloop in your dishwasher drain? last one i had installed, by a bigbox store even, did not and i had big issues with water from my sink draining into the tub and eventually spilling out. I couldnt tell in the video if you did this or not but may be worth a check...

Nice work, but why did you go from a stone top to a laminate top? Curious?
If you ever sell whoever moves into this house is going to love it
Hah, no kidding!
If you grew up in the 90s, oak was EVERYTHING!!! Cupboards, trim, tables, chairs, end tables, couch molding/feet, entertainment centers, living room floor speakers and the list goes on. So yeah to some of us it’s ugly and dated.
I'm amazed how the sheet rock wall can just hold up the cabinets with a few screws
The cabinets are screwed to the studs behind the drywall.
Thank you for the solid instruction and entertainment!
I can't wait to invest in tools and work on renovating my home.
replacing granite with laminate plywood is not really an upgrade
Auzzy4 agreed. With some finesse and compromise may have been able to reuse that countertop.
@@darinnetherland3466 may have been the original idea... until the top broke. So he did the voice over as if it was the plan the whole time.
@@darinnetherland3466 nah he wasn’t planning on to do that. That granite doesn’t have that sleek modern design too it.
Quartz 😍
Great video. Watching you work is like watching Bob ross paint. Keep ‘em coming and best to you and the people around you.
Excellent video. So is the double oven cabinet just sitting on its base or did you join them with screws, in addition to the oven cabinet wall screws? Also I will be using adjustable EZ levelers instead of shims due to uneven floor. Thanks.
I'm not sure about those draw pulls - I can see some shins and thighs getting jammed on the corners? Otherwise it looks great.
Same, not ideal at all, especially if they have any children 😬😬😬
@@alsanova between snagging their clothes or skin on the corners and the kids trying to climb them like a ladder... they may be a regret later on
True but at least they can be removed without leaving any visible screw holes
This is probably the most inefficient way to open a drawer. You have to pinch this thin piece of metal hard to pull the drawer.
Hate to walk into one of those drawer pulls with my shin. Nice job on the install
So much hard work! I wanted to install kitchen cabinets myself and came to search for how to do it. But your video have made me discouraged
Love the video. Quick question on electrical in the island- the wire for the outlet doesn't need any sort of conduit?
Really nice job, got lots of tips, fair play enjoyed the video, good working practice and easy to follow, always seems the u.s has a tool for everything that really works well and for the job, 👍🏻, pity the island screw holes were visable, screw head blanks could make them less easier to see.
Great job. 👍🏻
Thank you!!!!
Great video
Matt Quinn was thinking the same. Looks like it’s down low, but may loop on the side of the dishwasher.
nice work I like the older cabinets better but nice work nevertheless
Please do a walkthrough of your home explaining all the upgrades you’ve done as you go from room to room.
Was thinking the same two options.
I'd of run base and quarter round. The corner trim on that island doesn't fit right to the quarter round, but would fit right to the top of a baseboard.
Love your videos!!! Cheers from Mexico
Fantastic job, dude!
Wish this video would have come out last year. Haha. Lots of good tips that I could have used.
I fancy the wood structure and would have lightend it.
love the charging drawer
Great video! Why did you not install the new kitchen directly on the flooring? Isn't the kitchen less insulated? Thanks
love the video. personally, I would have just refaced the cabinets and gotten soft close hinges, to save money
I’m having an absolute terrible experience right now designing, ordering, and receiving cabinets from Lowe’s. So I find it hilarious that they couldn’t even deliver your entire order even though they’re sponsoring this video 😂😂😂
Lowe's sucks. You probably already learned your lesson, but never get into any big transactions with lowes. Or home depot for that matter
Video was nicely done. Great job in the kitchen !!!
I'm surprised you guys don't have adjustable feet as standard on your cabinets, in the UK it's pretty much the norm - made it much easier to level stuff than shims, for me at least :)
Same, also IKEA have hanging system, basically metal rail along the wall to hang cabinets easily. 👍🙂
Great video
Thank you very much
So you screw the cabinets to each other and to the wall.
What is the size of the screws
Is the outlet for the charging drawer under the counter a gfci? Or is it a regular outlet ran off the load side of the gfci above?
I've always heard that you don't want to set cabinets on top of flooring. So the last last remodel seems to have been done correctly, right?
Great work, though the "old" kitchen looked nice already :)
Thanks!
Exactly. What a waste.
@@darinnetherland3466
Of course, with the eight foot wall oven cabinet taking away some countertop space, they really do need the island. That kitchen would have hardly any prep space wothout it.
Hello just wanted to say awesome video. Also, were did you get your drill bit holder you show in the video thats wrapped around the drill?
How long did this job take you from demo to what you finish? Great job you did 💯 like your work 👌🏽.
Through to installing the backsplash? That took a few weeks. The demo and installing the cabinets took a few days.
Do you align the front of the dishwasher with the front of the cabinets, or the front of the countertop?
am I the only one that didn't mind the oak cabinets?
and went from a stone countertop to a laminate countertop? That seems like a downgrade.
Nah, I loved the oak. I don't really like this "modern" aesthetic. Feels (visually) like a doctor's or dentist's office.
Good to know!
Take care,
What did you do about hiding the screws in the island?
could always apply those white adhesive screw caps to hide them
At 12:50 super scary to see 220vts screwed to the floor! Half inch of water on that floor and it’s a wrap 😮
That's what a circuit breaker is for but yes, glad to have moved that.
The video shows a dewalt laser level @7:00 but your tool list links to a bosch level. Which one did you actually use for this project?
Heat the seam in the granite up with a heat gun next time. I makes the epoxy brittle and you can easily separate the seam so you or someone else can re-use the tops.
What did u do with all the holes the wall had from prior screws ..and what is the point of a ledger strip?
you are welcome for the support from a lowes employee
What should I do if there is only one stud behind kitchen cabinet?
Am I missing the link for the electronic push-to-open trash bin?
Amazing job, how long did it take you to get to this stage ?
Thanks 😊
Yes you can! Hope you enjoy your cabinets, Doris.
It's not cheaping out to not put the flooring underneath the cabinets. No contractor does that. It's a waste of time and money to do and has absolutely no benefit.
Better to have the cabinets sitting on the subfloor anyways, especially with floating hardwood flooring.
@@jman890202 floating?
@@thomasarussellsr Yep, it's common to put a hardwood floor on top of an underlayer. It allows the hardwood to expand and contract during humidity changes and acts as a thermal break.
Did you look into ikea cabinets? Thoughts on cost vs quality?
Connor Pearson he used those because they were free from Lowe’s. Ikea is a much better and cost effective option, especially for DIYers. I did my whole kitchen by myself with Ikea’s system. I’ve never done any remodel or cabinet work in my life.
Awesome Video. I learned a lot.
Whot do u do with the shims after putting them to u cut them or take em out i dont get it ...if u take em out wont the cabinet lose level?
I got a question my floor is the same the tile stops where the cabinets start so its higher...can i put self leveling cement n make em even?
Very nice project! Well done👍
I did, and I’ll show that in the next video when I get the sink hooked up. Good tip!
@@craftedworkshop figured you did but learned that one the hard way...
Thanks you!! I will also get custom estimates from Lowes also this week!!
