Why am I combing dog hair to make yarn? No-waste Thinking Shapes Sustainable Behavior

  • Welcome back to Hausfrau Friday! I survived the heatwave by sitting outside in the shade combing all the rest of my dog's hair, so I could spin it into yarn.
You might ask, "Angela...why on earth are you taking so much time and energy to save your dog's hair, spin it into wool and knit with it?? Couldn't you just go buy a hat?" Well, let me show you how I comb fiber and why I'm engaging in this project.

I spin dog hair for our local kennel club. Often the hair is knitted or crocheted as a keepsake . I have spun yarn and crocheted pieces to put in owners caskets as memorials of beloved dogs . Or spun the the first locks of a puppy. It is such beautiful yarn.

This video brings back fond memories of me sitting on the deck as a child, brushing my cat and trying to spin his fur. I wasn't very successful as I didn't have the correct tools and the fur was only about an inch long. Nonetheless it was fun to try, and prompted my mom to get me a drop spindle kit.

I think the yarn that this makes would be excellent mug rug coasters! I’ve made some on my rigid heddle loom and I’ve seen people knit some in linen stitch.

I was happy to see your poodle-specific video. My standard, Roman, is a particolor so he looks like a Jacob sheep. I am hoping to get enough hair for a hat, hopefully separated for colorwork. Thanks for the tips, I like MijnWolden as well.

Thanks for the update on the poodle hair project. How would the garment feel compared to sheep's wool? Would you make a video on the butcher's block behind you? It looks like it may be missing two steel bands. Have you thought about leaving the small bits of hair out for the birds to make nest out of.

So- the problem with leaving the hair out is- birds are very susceptible to chemicals such as flea medications, so it’s not always advisable to do this if you use any kind of flea and tick prevention..

When I make something I put a lot of thought and energy into it at every step. It makes sense for it to be an intentional practice.

The seconds fibers could also be used for felting, if dog hair fuses like wool.
Does it smell like dogs? As a middle schooler my mother bought me a winter coat that had like 11% dog hair, and the coat always smelled a little like a dog, but when my winter coat got wet, it smelled like a bunch of hairy dirty dogs. I was thrilled when I grew out of that coat, even though I had to finish the winter wearing my older brother's outgrown parka.

That was really interesting. As someone who knows nothing about making yarn I learned some things. I wish you had also shown what a hackle is and how a diz (sp) works. I'm looking forward to seeing the video on spinning.

I would felt the the scrape hair. Have you made anything yet? I have the same dog as Mijn Wolden only he's red fawn. I'll be working on hand warmers and the waste I'll be felting.

You can also repurpose things that would be waste by buying or finding second hand cotton clothes, in one store trip, to last you a decade with a few bucks. In fact, I havent bought clothes in years, I just end up with lots of tshirts for free from events.
You made me laugh that your repurposing dog hair is great for focusing on justice, equity and the needs of the unborn lmao. I'd rather go out and feed or help people if I want to help them than spin some poodle hair for an interesting cap

She does buy second hand clothes and is involved in social justice work. Everyybody needs time for meditative practices. If this particular meditative practice helps her connect to her ideals, then what’s the problem?

Have you ever heard of the Salish wool dog ? This blew my mind when I first read about it en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salish_Wool_Dog#:~:text=The%20Salish%20Wool%20Dog%20or,deliberately%20maintained%20as%20separate%20populations.
