    Gday mate, that’s a great idea mounting it on the back side of the work piece, I’ve never seen that before so now it’s time to build a rear tool post holder for my lathe, thanks for sharing another great tool and idea, much appreciated mate

    Thanks Steve,
    Hadn’t thought about knurling from the rear tool post, suppose it’s a bit like parting from the rear tool post, changes the pressure angles of the cross slide onto the ways and gives more support with the solid tool post.
    Cheers
    Raymond

    The little magnet is brilliant! I'll be sure and try that.

    Also very impressed with the magnet idea.
    I think that this is called this a bump knurler and there's another way of making a knurling tool that doesn't put quite so much lateral force on to the bearings, but I'm not really clear on this point. Perhaps you could do a video on making a gentler knurler for those of us with older smaller lathes, like the Myford?
    Keep up the good work. I love your videos.

    Nice looking tool steve although i prefer the scissor type as its a lot less tool pressure especially on smaller lathes.

      Hi Derek, I was thinking of making one sometime. The one I have is ok, but I would like to make one that is a bit more heavy duty, maybe with the larger wheels. I use straight knurling tools with one wheel a lot as one can guarantee a good knurl every time with those.

    I still am looking for an answer on this. When you put different diamond knurling wheels in the holder how do you determine the correct orientations. Yes they are mirrors to always cut diamond but the "teeth" are more cut at an angle towards one direction of rotation. Is there a right and wrong mounting?

    Hi Steve, could you tell me the size of the shank on the knurling tool please, it doesn't say on Banggood.
    Thank you.
    By the way, I bought a set of those HSS drill bits, M35 5% Cobalt that you showed on an earlier video and I think they are even better than you said. I was having trouble trying to drill a 9mm hole into some thick stainless, my HSS bits wouldn't touch it but these went through it like butter. Thank you very much for all your great tips and tool reviews, they are invaluable for me as I don't have the luxury of being able to 'take a chance' on tools being any good as I have very limited funds.

    I'm new to using a lathe. I just got a craftsman 101.21400 Lathe and I'm just setting it up. I have spindle and way oil but I don't know what to use for cutting, knurling and the like. What do you use or recommend?

    I want to make something like your rear toolpost but to take a bearing center tool so when you Apply knurling tool the bearing tool will be pressing back.

    So, about 280 rpm? Aluminum.....any need to change auto-feed gearing....more like threading than turning??

    Steve do you know if they make a cross slide for the south bend like the one you have on the myford to be able to run a rear tool post ?

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Anthony, I really don't know as I haven't had any experience at all with Southbend lathes. I've only ever seen them online.

      Hi Scott I just use new engine oil on steel, because I can get hold of it at low cost. I used to use proper cutting oil but find it is too expensive and there is no real noticeable difference. Sometimes I use WD40 spray, paraffin or ISO 32 hydraulic on knurling.

    Can you get replacement wheels for this tool

    • @thisnicklldo
      @thisnicklldo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chronos price for replacement knurling wheels (presumably these wouldn't fit the Banggood tool, so just for comparison) £7 for two. Cost of new Banggood tool with 3 pairs of wheels £14. Not much point in buying spare wheels at that price.

    What size is the shank ??

      @stefanocb6507 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Judging by the description on Banggood for what looks to me to be the same tool, albeit with only the 2 mm wheels, the shank should be 20mm x 18mm

    • @SteveJordan

      Hi it is 18mm

    Love your vids Steve - but REALLY - the long sleeve shirts/jackets are really a Bozo-no-no. 🙀

    • @SteveJordan

      I have worked like this for over 30 years. I have never caught sleeves on anything. The aerospace industry actually issued everone with long sleeve coats and there were never any accidents in the 27 years I worked there concerning the coats. I have actually found it better to wear clothes like this as it saves getting the wrists burned by hot swarf chips.
