I really really love watching these old Nascar races a whole whole lot and I still watch Nascar and I am still big Nascar fan for a long long time and I still watch Nascar greatest races I really like Nascar drivers
Hey David, I was there too sitting up in the stands behind the flag stand, That's why I came here to rewatch the race..one of the closest finishes I've ever seen!🏁..this is also the year I became a Rusty Wallace fan all the way until he retired.
**POINTS STANDINGS and WINS before the 1985 CAROLINA 500 (3 of 28):** #11 Darrell Waltrip (340pts, GM) #5 Geoff Bodine (-24, GM) #75 Lake Speed (-31, GM) #9 Bill Elliott (-58 with 1 win, Ford) #8 Bobby Hillin Jr (-72, GM) #90 Ken Schrader (-89, Ford) #33 Harry Gant (-90, GM) #3 Dale Earnhardt (-93 with 1 win, GM) #15 Ricky Rudd (-97, Ford) #44 Terry Labonte (-97, GM) #12 Neil Bonnett (-102, GM) Rusty Wallace (GM #2), best rookie of 1984, had 1 DNF and was 15th in points. Meanwhile, Bobby Allison (GM #22) started with 33-16 results due to 2 mechanical problems and was outside the top20 in points. Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus the rookie of the year before and whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In North Carolina’s case, the earlier race is the Carolina 500 while the later one is the American 500.
“Very young driver of only 27 years old.” 😮 These days one is an old veteran at that age. Times sure have changed.
What a race! Wish we had more of this today. Nascar Winston Cup Forever!
It truly was a better time

I was there, hanging on the fence at the start/finish line at the finish. Got the pic out a magazine, pinned up in my shop.
Good times!

One more note: poor Harry Gant. Lost consecutive races at Rockingham in the same manner albeit to two different drivers.
If I'm not mistaken, Bonnett beat Gant in the Spring race at Rockingham in '88 by almost the same margin when he was driving the 75 Pontiac...

Terry Labonte always seemed about as exciting as a bowl of oatmeal.
Lol cool calm terry!
Robert Yates and Gary Nelson on the crew for Bobby Allison. Dang. Extra surprised that things went so wrong for Bobby later in the season.
The defending champ and the going-to-be champ on Row 1. Almost foreshadowing! PS: I got that tune stuck in my head for WEEKS!
Great battle for the win in that one!
2 finishes in 2 years that where decided by a camera, but let’s retire this racetrack. Scratch my head…
Absolutely sweaty finish
Gant lost two in a row at Rockingham in similar fashion
Anybody knows the name of the theme used in the intro? SETN also used it in the starting grid music for the previous year's Rockingham fall race.
