black cauldron legit has this skeleton lord that wants to kill everything no matter what and hunchback has this man who thinks he's messiah and goes on a killing spree because he didnt get laid
One of the things about older Disney films is that I think the concept of such well-made animated features weren't designed just for children. Some of them were probably geared more towards adults and older children.
Walt Disney wanted to make something for all age groups to enjoy & that's why adults can enjoy the movies just as the kids do I know tons of adults who love Disney particularly old school Disney .
Pinocchio should be on place one...gave me nightmares as a child, still does today. Plus, the boys are never rescued and as far as we know the Coachman is still operating pleasure Island.
i think their treatment of the hunchback of notre dame is one of their very best and underrated movies---the exuberance of tom hulce singing "out there' is magnificent and "hellfire" is one of the best production numbers in any of their films
For me, its as the way they presented the cathedral itself as part of the cast - Esmerelda's singing 'God Help the Outcast' and the final shot where she's in the light of the stained glass window was stunning! They even took chorals from Latin Mass and other services and incorporated them in. Also, the rescue of Esmerelda from the stake and whole 'Sanctuary!' scene was breath-taking and complex!
NeverletyoufallNever I agree with you. Plus, the Princess was the most interesting one to that date! Disney has always been dark, but nobody likes to acknowledge that ;)

Pinocchio, Lion King Toy Story 3 and Pocahontas are hardly scary. That possession scene, with the yes in the fireplace, that music, the way she walked, her eyes fixed, after finding out who she really was... that's scary!
Scar: "Long Live The King." His own chilling words to Me means that Scar is declareing himself king of the pridelands now revealing who he truly was. Or a bunch of other meanings in my opinion.
THANK YOU! All my life people have gone on & on about Bambi's mother when the birds in the grass scene was the one that gave me nightmares...and STILL, at 53 years old, gives me chills.
I agree for the pure Disney winners but I wish they would stop putting Pixar with pure Disney they're two separate franchises. So I think Toy Story 3 should have been replaced with Fantasia Night on Bald Mountain is way more terrifying than Toy Story 3 has to offer.
Samuel Quan Well I won't argue with the separate franchise thing, but 'dark' doesn't necessarily refer to creepy images shown in the film. For Toy Story 3, it refers to the idea of the plotlines. I mean, there are direct parallels to the Holocaust in that film, which is pretty dark of you ask me.
Toy Story 3 still has some dark stuff like how the toys: Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye, Hamm, Slinky, Rex, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head almost got burned. Did I forget anyone? Let me know Samuel Quan. Not the aliens because they were controlling a crane to save the toys that need saving or Lotso because he got out without saving the toys.
Agree i watched it a first time and a second time and tbh its really not fit for kids like take the scene where that old lady just leaves todd (the fox) to fend for himself is heartbreaking
I didn't like that movie as a kid, just because Maleficent's cackles just give me chills down my spine, because it's kinda creepy. And that blood in this film is just scary enough.
jazmin santos how about Zootopia with all prejudice, bigotry and racism that exist in real life too. Not to mention that according to Watchmojo the main reason why 2017 was a bad year is because racism
Veronica Piccinini But Zootopia is about ANIMALS trying to be cops. In real life you will never see any animals be cops(except police dogs) and in real life, animals are innocent and we HUMANS are the ones who discriminate.
*sees hunchback at number 2* Me: WHAT DISNEY MOVIE IS DARKER THAN HUNCHBACK?! *black cauldron is revealed* Me: oh I forgot that movie it's so much darker 😂😂😂
Snow White and other animated films during 1920s and well into 1940s were never meant for kids. Animated movies back then were catered to adults, thus the dark themes and storyline to them. They are still great way to expose kids to darker side of life. My mom exposed me to Betty Boop due to the themes that Betty showcase the problems and difficulties a single young woman faces on a daily bases. Sexual harassment at the work place never changes. Dealing with animal abuse, gender roles, racism, etc... you watch Betty Boop and cartoons like her and you just know it was a way to address and question social issues of its time. Disney still does this in many of their films, along with the films they work together with Pixar. Cars franchise, WallE, the Toy Story franchise, Finding Dory, Up, the list of films goes on and on. Black Cauldron has got to be the darkest animation ever. The Horned King has got to be the scariest looking villain ever. Rarely anything gives me nightmare, but that guy.... *shivers* Hibbie jibbies. Now that is a villain looking mofo. He must be one of Dr. Facilier friends on the other side. Dr. Facilier: *grossed* Far too dark and scary, even for me. Horned King: *devilishly grins* That isn't what you said 34 years ago. The Coachman: *the devil himself* Get in line, BOYS! Dr. Facilier: *gulps* Horned King: *annoyed* ...and they say I'm the most forgotten villain of all time... this pedophile motherfucker gets overlooked every time.
Oh Phineas and Ferb! I love that show! :D Though it had a few dark episodes like Phineas and Ferb Gets Busted: Parts 1 and 2. I mean the smartest kids in that show go in a military school just for how smart they were. I hate that episode. :(
Disney’s never been one for comedy, they’re often drama with little bits of comedy sprinkled in. Emperor’s New Groove is the ONLY legitimately funny movie in the entire Disney canon
ok as a kid i first watched black cauldron and as you would expect it gave me nightmares so my parents hid it now it is one of my fave movies. thought thinking about it it took time money and people to make it and it makes me wonder why any of them thought this was appropriate for kids. this movies is not for kids it is essentially a horror movie
While I don’t think it’s so dark that kids shouldn’t watch and while I’m glad it got some respect over time, I definitely will admit that Disney took a really big and especially unnecessary risk with The Black Cauldron. Especially since it had an almost $45 million budget making it the worlds most expensive animated movie ever made at the time. Not even making back half it’s budget by only making $21.3 million. And to be honest (while I do like it got some love over time) it’s kinda heartbreaking to think that this is the one movie that almost put Disney outta business for good. Ya know it’s bad when they’re so ashamed by how bad it turned out to be when they have to hide it away for nearly a decade and a half.
Pinocchio should be first because of these poor donkeys (Alexander), that its the only movie in which a villain is not punished in any way. Expected it as number one. Or Quasimodo at least. Bambi yes i remember that scene with this bird getting killed. Was so upset for her.
I'd also like to mention Thee Great Mouse Detective 'cause I still have chills thinking of that bat, professor Rattigan, all these dolls, and when they decided to replace the queen with a robot...
I find it to be very awesome on how Quasimodo is actually deaf in the book and one of the castings Broadway musical. This was caused by him ringing the bells his whole life.
Pinocchio by far! D: When i was like 4 years old, many times i used to have nightmares with those poor donkeys boys who were sold to hard works away from their families. Reality wins fiction, if you know what i mean :O
I haven't seen Pinocchio in at least 15 years and that Pleasure Island scene still makes my stomach turn as a 26 year old. Scared the hell out of me as a child and still does..
a lot of disney's best films feature dark undertones that's what makes them stand out in the first place! They're not afraid to unnerve their young audience (unlike other animated kids films)
I agree with you . But almost all Disney films have dark scenes like Tangled: Mother Gothel stabbing Flynn Rider (not shown but we feel it) Atlantis The Lost Empire is dark in many areas, Brother Bear has some dark scenes and so on. But I still agree with the dark scenes, some people some like them (Not saying I like them) But some do. :)
I think Toy Story three should not be on this list that movie was not scary now Fantasia with Night on Bald Mountain not to mention The Rite of Spring with a dinosaur battle that's intense.
Toy Story 3 was dark, I saw it as a full grown woman and found it a tad scary for the kids. It was not scary to me, as I judge every horror against The Ring, The Thing and The Entity!
Boy most of these films are indeed dark. Should The Rescuers, Aladdin or The Little Mermaid also count as dark Disney Movies? (I have perfectly good reasons and ideas for why)
the little mermaid isn't nearly as dark as the ones on the list---most of the movie is very charming and upbeat and it's my fave of all the disney animated films
I guess...but Toy story 3 was pretty dark. I mean when all the toys were looking at each other accepting their demise as they slowly went into an incinerator was scary. But yeah, Night on Bald Mountain was extremely scary and dark.
The Fox and the Hound is my favorite Disney film and I remember as a child, I was so scared of the scenes of Tod and Copper fighting each other and Copper shoving himself into Tod and Vixey's burrow as he was getting close to the camera But it's still a beautiful and sad story about two friends who are supposed to be enemies
That's rated G, and was based off a book written in the 19th century. The Black Cauldron was the first Disney movie to gain a PG rating, while also giving some kids nightmares in the end.
The darkest scenes/ songs in movies for me included: Bambi’s mother dying, Pleasure Island ( Pinnochio), Mob Song ( Beauty & The Beast), Incinerator Scene ( Toy Story 3), Savages ( Pocahontas), Stampede & Be Prepared ( Lion King), Hellfire (Hunchback Of Notre Dame), Chernabog ( Fantasia)
Fun Fact: Tarzan, Bambi, and The Fox and the Hound all have sequels that aren't really sequels despite their titles. Instead the movies take place during the childhood years if the first movie.
Beauty and the Beast is very dark too. The way it starts, all scenes from the forest, the kidnapping of Belle in exchange for the release of her father, how Gaston goes to invade the palace.. c'mon watchmojo!
I love Bambi so much. I don't feel like people really 'get it' or find it interesting seeing as it's not so much a story but a cycle of nature. Yet that's why I love it. Although Fantasia is amazing I love that the most. I just love it when Disney used to go for the art side of it
They didn't add Dumbo, The Rescuers, its sequel, Tarzan, The Great Mouse Detective, Atlantis: The Lost Empire and 101 Dalmatians! All of them are dark, too. Besides I don't think Alice in Wonderland is that disturbing, or is it?
I always had a theory to why Disney usually associates with death. You see, back in the teens, Walt Disney enlisted as an ambulance driver during World War One and was often surrounded by death and horrifying images of soldiers daily. After the war, he developed the idea of Mickey Mouse in the 20's, and well... you know the rest.
Aside from those movies, I don't know which other dark Disney movie to say. Edit: Oh I know one: Inside Out. Think about it: there were some dark parts in that movie (even though I wasn't scared). If you haven't watched Inside Out, don't read my comment OK? OK there are them. Riley's Islands of Personality crumbled because of not doing them and being miserable because of the core memories not being attached like Goofball and Hockey, she tried to run away, and Bing Bong died. Others if they are: Anger made a huge mistake by making Riley run away (I know what your gonna say it's like the run away thing), etc. Again those that haven't watched the movie, I don't know why you are reading this. Read someone else's comment or comments.
They may be dark but you have actually listed several of my all time favourite Disney films: The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron... and even though they are dark these films still put positive spins at the end, especially since a lot of the original stories for Disney films (The Little Mermaid, The Hunchback of Notre Dame etc.) were far less happy at the end...
Seriously guys, Frollo has done so many crimes and horrific deeds it's unbelievable. He's awful even by Disney villain standards. Poll: what do you think is the worst thing that he did? I doubt you'll need to be reminded, but just in case: Killed an innocent woman Tried to drown a baby Locked the same baby in a bell tower for decades and lied about his mother and how she died Gave him a name that literally meant "deformed" or "half-formed" Had him publicly shamed in front of hundreds of people just for the way he looked Tried to kill him again, repeatedly Lusted after a woman literally a third of his own age Threatened her with burning to death if she didn't let him have her LITERALLY BURNED DOWN ENTIRE BUILDINGS LOOKING FOR HER And still believed he was justified and righteous. Did I miss anything?
And hunchback of Notre dame....omg...I was severely gobsmacked...I watched the movie then read the novel...I was so depressed after reading it but that didn’t stop me from watching the French musical (which is awesome by the way)
It's actually interesting how almost all of these are old and the few that are newer are not nearly as dark as the others. It shows how open we used to be in showing evil and terrifying elements to the kids. For some time now is mostly sunshines and rainbows mixed with adult-oriented hidden jokes until they get bullied or start their own life and become terrified of what humanity really is, unable to cope with those feelings and situations and in denial that no one will care for or protect them. Sad.
Also the reveal said bear was Koda's mother. Kenai bonded with Koda because he lost his mother and he's traveling on his own... and then discovered that he's without a mother... BECAUSE OF HIM.
I hate #3. What were they thinking? I remembered I hated that movie for some reason when watching it as a kid, but I forgot why. I guess I now remember.
I love the black cauldron, even as a kid and most people thought I was crazy for it, my favorite line is " a rise my measures of death, our time as come." And my favorite character is the horned King.
The Fox & the Hound shattered my heart. I was only 6 when I first saw it. I wanted their friendship to overcome the odds so badly. When it didn’t happen, I wept. I was one of those sensitive kids you were talking about. As much as I’d like to rewatch it, I know the ending will have me calling a therapist.
Top 15 Darkest Disney Movies IMO 15. Mulan - The scene where Mulan and the other soldiers see the village on fire is definitely the darkest moment from that movie 14. The Rescuers - It captures the horrors of slavery, kidnapping and abuse 13. Pocahontas - This movie captures the horrors of war and racism and Ratcliffe’s actions shows what racism is like 12. The Fox and the Hound - The scene where Copper and his hunter tries to kill Tod shows how friendship can turn into enemies 11. The Lion King - Mufasa’s death is one of the most disturbing scenes not only in Disney history but film history as well 10. Dumbo - The Pink Elephants scene is scary, especially the parts where they get into the camera makes you think they are going towards your face, pretty scary isn’t it 9. Fantasia - The scene with Chernabog is terrifying but still an amazing performance 8. Sleeping Beauty - The scene where Maleficent hypnotize Aurora is an example of a villain manipulating their victim. The dragon scene is also terrifying but also one of the most iconic Disney scenes of all time 7. Beauty and the Beast - Honestly, the main reason why I rank Beauty and the Beast so high because of the Wild West scene and the scene where Gaston tries to kill the Beast as his actions shows how people can be desperate for someone who doesn’t love them 6. The Black Cauldron - Every scene with The Horned King is terrifying but one of the most underrated Disney villains 5. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad - The Headless Horseman scene is scary to look at which is why I rank this super high 4. The Hunchback of Notre Dame - It’s definitely a dark Disney movie. The Hellfire scene is terrifying to watch combined with the epic score and the cinematography. Frollo is definitely the scariest Disney villain to exist 3. Pinocchio - It captures the horrors of slavery in childhood. The donkey transformation scene is also one of the most traumatizing moments in Disney history and the scene with the Whale named Monstro is also scary, definitely a thrilling moment 2. Bambi - Bambi’s mother dying is also disturbing and the forest fire is also scary. Definitely something that kids should see with their parents by their side 1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - IMO, this is the darkest Disney movie. The Evil Witch trying to kill Snow White due to her surpassing her beauty is an example of how jealousy can turn into a sour note.
Pinocchio never bothered me much as a kid, but I always thought the darkest moment was when Stromboli told Pinocchio he’d chop him into firewood once he’d outlived his usefulness and then threw the knife into the what was left of the other old marionette puppet that he’d already chopped up.
I’m surprised that some of those Disney movies are G rated, like they should’ve PG because of violence and scary imagery. Like gunshots and fire flames, there’s no way they should be G rated!
The Black Cauldron had a deleted scene where it actually shows one of the living men in the Horned King's army being dissolved after being touched by the Undead soldiers. It's on TH-cam actually, last time I checked. I don't remember the Pleasure Island slave guy's devil face but I do remember that donkey transformation scene. That poor kid's screams of "MAMA! MAMAAAA!" still haunt me a tad whenever I think of Pinocchio.
I love Disney, but that is definitely true. One of the most popular trends in Disney movies is to kill off at least one of the parents. Anytime you start a movie by killing a parent that's a pretty dark turn. They of course always have happy endings, but there is darker elements along the way.
Cinderella's best friend is her father who dies and she is left in the care of her jealous and abusive step mother who treats her as a slave. This isn't exactly light hearted material.
Elsa is taught to fear who she is instead of embrace it, forcing her to lock herself in her room for most of her life and cut off all contact with her sister. Along the way their parents are killed. When Elsa reveals herself by accident she is forced to run and a group of men chase after her calling her a monster and vowing to stop her. Those are also not exactly light hearted events. I wouldn't say that the whole movie is dark, but there are elements that are included that are darker in tone. It's the nature of a Disney movie.
Fun fact: The Black Cauldron was originally intended to be more darker than it already was, but after testing out to test audiences and kids with a lot of them left disturbed and traumatized, Disney had to tone it down by removing roughly *50 scenes* from the movie. And even with the cut content it still frighten children and was one of the reason why it flopped at the box office. There was once a rumor stating that one of producers “supposedly” owns a black and white uncut version of the movie. But the rumor ended when the producer stated that he lost the copy.
The Fox and the Hound was a classic when it was released in 1981, what Disney did with it was great with the story of friendship, love, and loyalty, and has a bittersweet ending where Tod spends the rest of his days with his new mate and will always remember Copper, and they would always be friends. I hope that one day Disney would make a live action remake of it with CGI animals like they with the live action remake of the Jungle Book, I would love to see that.
A lot of Disney movies scared the heck out of me; The donkey and whale scenes from Pinoccio, the Queen's death in Snow White, Ursula as a giant in The Little Mermaid, Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty (yep, every scene she was in), The Shear Khan scene with the vultures in the Jungle Book... heck I was scared when the Genie lifted up the film to say "made you look" after laughing in the form of a moon. (I was/am a very sensitive person.) ...Hey, I got over them. (took me 16 years to get over Sleeping Beauty though) BWF
Here are some others that deserve a spot in this video Cinderella I remember watching Cinderella's dress getting destroyed by her step sisters and that scene is so awful Sleeping beauty When Aurora is getting hypnotized and going to the spinning wheel it's kinda dark The little mermaid When king Tritan destroys the statue of Eric and when Ursula is singing and trying to get ariel to give her her voice and when Ursula literally becomes a giant cause those scenes are pretty dark
At first I was disappointed that Hunchback only made it to number 2, but then I realized they were saving Black Cauldron for last.
Dragonslayer is still outclassing them in this kind of competition .
While not a true Disney movie (they worked with parmmount on this) in term of horror ,gore and parents horror ( not safe for childrens to see yet).
Not here to Call for War BUT would recommend for matures fantasy loving audiences.
I mean.... The Hunchback of Notre Dame doesn't contain blood or a small bit of gore😊
I guessed towards the end of the list that The Black Cauldron would be the number one list, and I was right
There are so many reasons why the black cauldron was the first animated PG disney film
There were so many violent and gory deleted scenes
And there was one where eilonwy was partially nude

in pinocchio, the donkeys also get sold to places like salt mines and circuses.
Well, that's if they can't still talk. They might be the lucky ones compared to what probably happens to the ones who can still talk...
thats right. I shudder to think what happens to those who can still talk.
Yyyyyyyyy🤣
In a way it's slave child labor.
I always assumed that when they threw them back that they were waiting for them to stop being able to talk. If that wasn't the case then the alternative is very dark indeed.
The donkey scene in Pinocchio is one of the most terrifying scenes EVER!!! Disney or not!!!!
OH MY GOD YES😰😭
Matteo Onida It's even worse when you find out that originally, Lampwick was going to try to escape with Pinocchio and Jiminy, only to sacrifice his freedom for the two when the Coachman and his goons try to capture them in their escape. Yes finally, somebody else is speaking my language
Pinocchio is terrifying
You forgot the forest fire in Bambi. That's pretty dark too. Scared me when I was younger
I think they only picked one scene per movie and the death of Bambi's mother is more sad and dark
Or what about when Bambi has to battle another buck who’s obviously older for Feline and was legit trying to kill him?
@@kristinahuchison2511 that's obviously why Bambi is a half scary movie and I like it
The Hunchback of Norte Dame best Disney film
Nope, that award goes to The Lion King.

Frozen and even in the witcher 3 . I love Disney no doubt 😍😍😘😇

Samuel Quan Fuck yeah
Toy Story 3 still has some dark stuff like how the toys: Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye, Hamm, Slinky, Rex, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head almost got burned. Did I forget anyone? Let me know Samuel Quan. Not the aliens because they were controlling a crane to save the toys that need saving or Lotso because he got out without saving the toys.
I kind of agree. They have separate countdowns for tear jerkers.
Disney bought out Pixar in 2006.
The Fox & The Hound is beautifully underrated. I still cry watching that masterpiece. It's sad, pure an yet wholesome.
Agree i watched it a first time and a second time and tbh its really not fit for kids like take the scene where that old lady just leaves todd (the fox) to fend for himself is heartbreaking
Sleeping Beauty was very dark! How is it not on here
bryce atu Yes,it was also the first Disney film to show blood.
I didn't like that movie as a kid, just because Maleficent's cackles just give me chills down my spine, because it's kinda creepy. And that blood in this film is just scary enough.
SP/Goji Fan And now?
+warren byrne Well, it didn't anymore. But I get to enjoy it still. It's part of my top 3 favorite Disney movies.
It’s dark bc there was blood in movie where the prince throws his sword at maleficent (who’s in her dragon form) chest, causing her to bleed
disney is not all happy and sunsets
jazmin santos how about Zootopia with all prejudice, bigotry and racism that exist in real life too. Not to mention that according to Watchmojo the main reason why 2017 was a bad year is because racism
oh ok that too
jazmin santos true
Veronica Piccinini But Zootopia is about ANIMALS trying to be cops. In real life you will never see any animals be cops(except police dogs) and in real life, animals are innocent and we HUMANS are the ones who discriminate.
jazmin santos ...yes...
*sees hunchback at number 2*
Me: WHAT DISNEY MOVIE IS DARKER THAN HUNCHBACK?!
*black cauldron is revealed*
Me: oh I forgot that movie it's so much darker 😂😂😂
Oof
Dr. Facilier: *gulps*
Horned King: *annoyed* ...and they say I'm the most forgotten villain of all time... this pedophile motherfucker gets overlooked every time.
Okay I admit it, Disney is pretty dark sometimes; but it has brightened up over the years. Look at the Disney TV shows for example
Oh Phineas and Ferb! I love that show! :D
Though it had a few dark episodes like Phineas and Ferb Gets Busted: Parts 1 and 2.
@@sllawson6 what about Winnie the Pooh (2011)? That one was hilarious
@@rockotarsoldaccount ok you got me there
Why isn't Sleeping Beauty on this list?
The whole spindle sequence is one of the scariest scenes in Disney history
What about Tarzan?Have any of you seen the original storyboard opening. It’s pretty intense and dark
We talking about movies not some book
If memory serves me, the bird in Bambi didn't just want to fly away. She wanted to get back to her eggs. Is that right?
That makes it even sadder. :(
I Haded that scene it was so scary, and that noice when hunters were coming. But I was just a kid.
but I still cry when bambi’s mothers dies
no never mentions any eggs
Sadly no, she just panicked from the pressure.
i loves that scene tbh
ok as a kid i first watched black cauldron and as you would expect it gave me nightmares so my parents hid it now it is one of my fave movies. thought thinking about it it took time money and people to make it and it makes me wonder why any of them thought this was appropriate for kids. this movies is not for kids it is essentially a horror movie
Well, Cruella de Ville came close. She didn't get her spotted coat and got her car totaled, but otherwise she got off scot-free.
I'd also like to mention Thee Great Mouse Detective 'cause I still have chills thinking of that bat, professor Rattigan, all these dolls, and when they decided to replace the queen with a robot...
Hunchback of Norte Dame and the Lion King are some of my favorite movies.
Same
I find it to be very awesome on how Quasimodo is actually deaf in the book and one of the castings Broadway musical. This was caused by him ringing the bells his whole life.
I will always love "The Black Cauldron" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame"!
Same :) they're definitely in my top 10 favorite Disney movies of all time! :D
The bleak tone of Notre Dame was never thrown away when a Kingdom Hearts spin off featured this world. Great job Nomura-san
The subway scene in Oliver and company really scared me as a child, I can't watch it now as an adult.
Did y’all forget Dumbo in this list? From what I remember there are a few parts in that movie that are dark.
Those pink elephants.
Racist crows if u don’t know what I’m saying there are some crows and one of them is named Jim aka Jim Crow does that ring a bell
I think Basil the Great Mouse Detective was pretty dark
Well, it was a detective story, after all.
Toy Story 3 had me 😢💔
Kylo Ren I agree, where it looked liked they were going to be burned was very upsetting!
I was very emotional at the end of toy story 3
Boy most of these films are indeed dark.
Should The Rescuers, Aladdin or The Little Mermaid also count as dark Disney Movies? (I have perfectly good reasons and ideas for why)
Sean Horace I think so.
the little mermaid isn't nearly as dark as the ones on the list---most of the movie is very charming and upbeat and it's my fave of all the disney animated films
Saz Fretz Ursulas' death was pretty disturbing.
true but i still stand by what i said about most of the film being upbeat
Sean Horace Yeah The Rescuers is a pretty unsettling film, especially by today's standards.
I am OBSESSED with The Hunchback of Notre Dame and its music
Same here.
I don't think Toy story 3 should be on this list Night on Bald Mountain from Fantasia is way more darker than Toy Story 3.
I guess...but Toy story 3 was pretty dark. I mean when all the toys were looking at each other accepting their demise as they slowly went into an incinerator was scary. But yeah, Night on Bald Mountain was extremely scary and dark.
The Fox and the Hound is my favorite Disney film and I remember as a child, I was so scared of the scenes of Tod and Copper fighting each other and Copper shoving himself into Tod and Vixey's burrow as he was getting close to the camera
But it's still a beautiful and sad story about two friends who are supposed to be enemies
I love the Black Cauldron movie!
DarkMirria1 It's one of my favorites!! ❤
Once you watched the Horned King in "The Black Cauldron", being scared of Voldemort was not a option.
Good news about the Black Cauldron Disney is actually remaking that movie but this time they're doing the entire book series that movie is based on.
Samuel Quan oh no. The original is better
Isabelle R don't worry the second book in the series is actually called The Black Cauldron
Hunchback should have been number 1.
That's rated G, and was based off a book written in the 19th century. The Black Cauldron was the first Disney movie to gain a PG rating, while also giving some kids nightmares in the end.
Whovian103 I say it should've been rated PG too.
I thought Hunchback was rated PG, or at least PG-13, due to the violence and biblical reference/cursing, outright mentioning 'Hell' and 'damnation'...
Hell and damnation ain't swears (well, Hell is if you use it in a phrase)
Whovian103 I mean The Horned King is pretty unsettling.
Love Disney😍
JAYLA ROSE me too
JAYLA ROSE me too
JAYLA ROSE We all do!
JAYLA ROSE is
Same
The darkest scenes/ songs in movies for me included:
Bambi’s mother dying, Pleasure Island ( Pinnochio), Mob Song ( Beauty & The Beast), Incinerator Scene ( Toy Story 3), Savages ( Pocahontas), Stampede & Be Prepared ( Lion King), Hellfire (Hunchback Of Notre Dame), Chernabog ( Fantasia)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of my favorite disney films. The song "hellfire" is my number one favorite song in the film
Yeah that is a great song.
Fantasia’s only dark because of the Night On Bald Mountain sequence
The Dinosaur sequence is also really dark and scary.
The Fox and the Hound is the darkest Disney movie!!
It's not just the deaths in "Bambi" that are dark. The thunderstorm and wildfire scenes scared me the most as a child.
I love Bambi so much. I don't feel like people really 'get it' or find it interesting seeing as it's not so much a story but a cycle of nature. Yet that's why I love it. Although Fantasia is amazing I love that the most. I just love it when Disney used to go for the art side of it
You said it! Those movies are beautiful to look at.
I wouldn't say so.
Ikr
Tarzan is the best
I doubt you'll need to be reminded, but just in case:
Killed an innocent woman
Tried to drown a baby
Locked the same baby in a bell tower for decades and lied about his mother and how she died
Gave him a name that literally meant "deformed" or "half-formed"
Had him publicly shamed in front of hundreds of people just for the way he looked
Tried to kill him again, repeatedly
Lusted after a woman literally a third of his own age
Threatened her with burning to death if she didn't let him have her
LITERALLY BURNED DOWN ENTIRE BUILDINGS LOOKING FOR HER
And still believed he was justified and righteous.
Did I miss anything?
He tried to burn Esmerelda at the stake
Sad.
Hercules should be on here that part with that snake thing with the 3 heads is. Terrifying till this dayy😭😭
Lael McQuiller The Hydra
The darkest thing about Brother Bear was when Kenai killed the bear.
Also the reveal said bear was Koda's mother. Kenai bonded with Koda because he lost his mother and he's traveling on his own... and then discovered that he's without a mother... BECAUSE OF HIM.
@@diegodubber2140 hence why it is dark and sad
I hate #3. What were they thinking? I remembered I hated that movie for some reason when watching it as a kid, but I forgot why. I guess I now remember.
Gabrielle Diroll I hated it! I actually hate like half these movies
Gabrielle Diroll I absolutely LOVE that movie. It’s number 3 in my all time favorite Disney films. And yes it is indeed dark and tragic!
Well I guess you haven't read a book yet. My friendly advise for you: DON'T
When you stop to think about it, a movie based on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” is bound to be pretty dark.
How is the horseman able to laugh without a head???
Snake5461 they took chest voice too seriously
Ghost Logic
Snake5461 The pumpkin?
Snake5461 The Horsemen is a ghost.
That question will haunt me for this rest of my life.
I love the black cauldron, even as a kid and most people thought I was crazy for it, my favorite line is " a rise my measures of death, our time as come." And my favorite character is the horned King.
Yes more disney top tens please
The Fox & the Hound shattered my heart. I was only 6 when I first saw it. I wanted their friendship to overcome the odds so badly. When it didn’t happen, I wept. I was one of those sensitive kids you were talking about. As much as I’d like to rewatch it, I know the ending will have me calling a therapist.
Black Cauldron is my favourite film along with Peter Pan!!
Top 15 Darkest Disney Movies IMO
15. Mulan - The scene where Mulan and the other soldiers see the village on fire is definitely the darkest moment from that movie
14. The Rescuers - It captures the horrors of slavery, kidnapping and abuse
13. Pocahontas - This movie captures the horrors of war and racism and Ratcliffe’s actions shows what racism is like
12. The Fox and the Hound - The scene where Copper and his hunter tries to kill Tod shows how friendship can turn into enemies
11. The Lion King - Mufasa’s death is one of the most disturbing scenes not only in Disney history but film history as well
10. Dumbo - The Pink Elephants scene is scary, especially the parts where they get into the camera makes you think they are going towards your face, pretty scary isn’t it
9. Fantasia - The scene with Chernabog is terrifying but still an amazing performance
8. Sleeping Beauty - The scene where Maleficent hypnotize Aurora is an example of a villain manipulating their victim. The dragon scene is also terrifying but also one of the most iconic Disney scenes of all time
7. Beauty and the Beast - Honestly, the main reason why I rank Beauty and the Beast so high because of the Wild West scene and the scene where Gaston tries to kill the Beast as his actions shows how people can be desperate for someone who doesn’t love them
6. The Black Cauldron - Every scene with The Horned King is terrifying but one of the most underrated Disney villains
5. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad - The Headless Horseman scene is scary to look at which is why I rank this super high
4. The Hunchback of Notre Dame - It’s definitely a dark Disney movie. The Hellfire scene is terrifying to watch combined with the epic score and the cinematography. Frollo is definitely the scariest Disney villain to exist
3. Pinocchio - It captures the horrors of slavery in childhood. The donkey transformation scene is also one of the most traumatizing moments in Disney history and the scene with the Whale named Monstro is also scary, definitely a thrilling moment
2. Bambi - Bambi’s mother dying is also disturbing and the forest fire is also scary. Definitely something that kids should see with their parents by their side
1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - IMO, this is the darkest Disney movie. The Evil Witch trying to kill Snow White due to her surpassing her beauty is an example of how jealousy can turn into a sour note.
I read the title as “top ten dankest Disney movies”
Mine says Darkest not Dankest.
Pinocchio never bothered me much as a kid, but I always thought the darkest moment was when Stromboli told Pinocchio he’d chop him into firewood once he’d outlived his usefulness and then threw the knife into the what was left of the other old marionette puppet that he’d already chopped up.
MsMojo: *talks about dark Disney movies. *
*shows claytons death scene*
Me:
Black cauldron is dark,
But I thought (Snow White, fox and the hound, and Pinocchio) were twice as disturbing as it
7:10 Talk about "If I can't have you, no one can."
This one is tragic and scary, when Elsa 's powers got out of control she took a glimpse on Anna 's frozen face.
I’m surprised that some of those Disney movies are G rated, like they should’ve PG because of violence and scary imagery. Like gunshots and fire flames, there’s no way they should be G rated!
Matt R Based on that logic, Dinosaur should’ve been PG-13.
Kota Bear it would be PG, they wouldn’t make it PG-13 it would discourage parents from taking their children to movies based on the PG-13 rating!
Matt R I heard some children saw Jurassic Park and that was PG-13!
Kota Bear Jurassic Park was mostly made for wider demographic, just like Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies!
Black Cauldron I’m pretty sure is PG but not sure any others on this list
The Black Cauldron had a deleted scene where it actually shows one of the living men in the Horned King's army being dissolved after being touched by the Undead soldiers. It's on TH-cam actually, last time I checked.
I don't remember the Pleasure Island slave guy's devil face but I do remember that donkey transformation scene. That poor kid's screams of "MAMA! MAMAAAA!" still haunt me a tad whenever I think of Pinocchio.
All Disney movies are dark
ceegsterr9669 what about home on the range
ceegsterr9669 Cinderella?😅
Am I the only one that thought Princess and the Frog was really dark? I definitely felt it deserved at LEAST an honorable mention.
Ichabod and Mr. Toad is a masterpiece!
Black Calderon had a lot of subliminal messages like all Disney movies... black Calderon the most disturbing Disney movie ever made
You forget Sleeping Beauty and Rescuers...
Where is big hero 6?
When Hiro loses it and order BayMax to destroy Professor Callaghan?
When I saw The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow when I was a kid, I had trouble sleeping and had nightmares for a long time. It's amazing why I still watch it.
(I was/am a very sensitive person.)
...Hey, I got over them. (took me 16 years to get over Sleeping Beauty though)
BWF
I always thought that that Genie scene was pretty funny.
The tale of the headless guy is one of my favorite animations. Childhood classic.
What about The Great Mouse Detective? That's a pretty dark film, much darker than The Lion King and Snow White.
Great Mouse Detective should be thrown away, not watched!
@@zeldafan1942 Appreciate your opinion, but I respectfully disagree ;P
Here are some others that deserve a spot in this video
Cinderella
I remember watching Cinderella's dress getting destroyed by her step sisters and that scene is so awful
Sleeping beauty
When Aurora is getting hypnotized and going to the spinning wheel it's kinda dark
The little mermaid
When king Tritan destroys the statue of Eric and when Ursula is singing and trying to get ariel to give her her voice and when Ursula literally becomes a giant cause those scenes are pretty dark
I think The Incredibles should've been included.
The fox and the hound book is a lot sadder and darker. Didn't Jenny from Oliver & Company get kidnapped? I'd say that's terrifying.
is it weird that i really want to see a live action version of Disney the black cauldron as i love the film.
They're making it, it's just in VERY early development.
You got that right. The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad gave me nightmares. I love the Mr. Toad part but Ichabod, not so much
I love the Black Cauldron though! I think it's one of Disney's best!
Vonnie Puff I couldn’t agree more with you
Regardless of how vile and evil it was, Scar is one of the greatest Disney villains ever!
