He was the best ever. I was allowed to stay up and watch those halftime highlights, then sent to bed. His verbal duels with Dandy Don and quips during blowouts made MNF the best game every week.

I truly believe Howard Cosell's voice command, rhythm and professionally sarcastic presentation is what brought me to Monday Nite Footbal as a child. Even if Cosell was a bit under the influence, he was a far better, more entertaining broadcaster than 95% of his peers. A quarter century after his passing, Cosell remains a bigger name than any of today's vanilla sports announcers.
Howard Cosell was an entertainer, first and foremost. Monday Night Football and MLB games were always a hoot or a near-riot with Cosell at the helm; he could improvise and his language had that wonderful, distinct cadence. I think his personality is best summed up in the 1971 movie 'Bananas' where he plays himself (barging his way through a crowd: "Ex-cuse me! A-mer-i-can television! Coming through here! EX-CUSE ME!")
Personally I loved the Frank/Don/Howard chemistry. Don was always around to prick Howard's bombastic balloon. At his best moments, Howard could elevate sports. At his worst, he could be imperious and judgmental. The key to enjoying Cosell was to not take him too seriously.
I liked Howard Cosell. I wasn't a football fan but I liked Howard. I bet a couple of fifths of Crown Royal, a large bucket of ice, two rocks glasses and Howard and I would have had a great time together. I would hope he doesn't have one of those impairing "ear infections" at work often, though. He sounded like he was at the bottom of one fifth and half way through another that night.
I'm old enough to remember him and I always loved MNF because of his colorful input. Let's be serious... Howard was Monday Night Football. Then we find out years later that he was a terrific guy and his colleagues and family loved him. Can't argue with that. Muhammad Ali thought the world of him.

I remember someone came up with the idea of making foam "bricks" you could throw at the TV when Howard was talking. They sold 'em at Walgreens right next to the Chia Pets, no kidding. But he made MNF fun to watch, just to see what he'd say. Frank, Don and Howard had a pretty good chemistry for a while, I liked that period of MNF.
Monday Night Football was the absolute best then , the 3 guys represented a great cross section of the American male, the good old boy, the quiet business like male, and the obnoxious know it all jew. My favorite memory of Cosell was a Monday Night Football broadcast of a seriously boring game that was just one low-light (as opposed to highlight) after another. I think it was late in the 4th quarter when the camera was panning around the stadium of mostly empty seats during a timeout. There was this lone guy up in the cheap seats sitting there with this seriously bored and disgusted look on his face. The camera zoomed in on the guy and he could see the camera pointing at him. So he flipped off the camera on live television. Without missing a beat Cosell remarked as only he could... *_Well I guess that means we're number 1."_* It was a classic live television moment back in the day when television wasn't as obviously evil and demonic like it is today. :-I

I drove back home like that thousands of times and the only time I crashed my car I was stone cold sober. Seems like Howard Cosell was the Howard Stern of sports commentaries...I.E. went against the grain and called out everyone from co workers, owners, players and fans.
Howard was a super talent, and was always prepared and well-informed. He was a person of towering intellect and, more important, of great integrity. While he was absurdly oversensitive to criticism that he should have just shrugged off, he was absolutely correct in his conviction that he was far more intelligent than the sportswriters who lobbed cheap shots at him. So one can appreciate his sense of annoyance on the matter. In the end, Cosell was a giant.

Seems like Howard Cosell was the Howard Stern of sports commentaries...I.E. went against the grain and called out everyone from co workers, owners, players and fans.
Ah this is nothing - Bernie Kosar is like this every broadcast.

Howard was a super talent, and was always prepared and well-informed. He was a person of towering intellect and, more important, of great integrity.
While he was absurdly oversensitive to criticism that he should have just shrugged off, he was absolutely correct in his conviction that he was far more intelligent than the sportswriters who lobbed cheap shots at him. So one can appreciate his sense of annoyance on the matter.
In the end, Cosell was a giant.

Cosell was Monday Night Football. People hate him but he wasn't afraid to "Tell It Like It Is" Yes Cosell never was what society calls "Politically Correct" in his Sports and Entertainment Announcing. There was no in between with Howard Cosell. People either loved him or hated him.
Howard was pure class.
