Agreed. I absolutely adored Klopp but I can’t lie, I was ready for something new and it seems like football might be moving towards a more technical and nuanced approach with the rise of arteta, xabi and the pep protégés, I think after time, ideas and things can get stale. I think more than Klopp, what’s made a bigger change is a whole new coaching staff bringing in fresh ideas. 9 years of hearing the same message… sometimes it’s a good thing to change things up. For the coaching staff too. I’m sure they’re all enjoying new challenges wherever they ended up. The constant high intensity press I think eventually started burning the players out and this will probably help not only prevent injuries but allow them to maintain their intensity for the whole season instead of until about March every other season. I’m intrigued to see where this goes. No doubt there will be some dips but Slot looks like he’s extremely clear on what he wants and is good at getting his message across. The players all seem to be loving it too.
Having a change in tactics is certainly what Liverpool needed, we have the squad to win the league but I feel like Klopps tactics were not as great as they use to be. We needed something new but similar also therefore I trust Arne Slot!
yep. the last two seasons were unrecognisable from klopp and seemed more pep lindjers ball which is not what we signed up for. glad we made the change when we did.
Thanks for the analysis of Slot's football. The buildup play, the overloads and the upward press at the opponent's half are quite new, and I love it. The unpredictability at the buildup phase will definitely be Slot's style, the squad should be well drilled. Forcing the opponent's to play wide through counter press is valuable too. All in all, I see a different Liverpool come next season. Can't wait for it to start already.
Makes me realise what a visionary my school football coach was. I'm going back to 1980, we were taught to always provide teammates with two passing options, ideally one sideways and one forward. We were coached to control the ball first time and pass It forward on the deck into space for players who would be running on. (At the time, English football was all about getting It up the pitch aerially to the big target man,.possibly one of the reasons we failed to qualify for tournaments, let alone win them.) It meant we constantly moved and shifted positions and hardly ever lost the ball. Because of this we didn't concede many either. V similar to the Liverpool style of play at the time, they played great football and conceded v few. Nothing in football is new, it's hard to beat clever movement, good close control and good coaching. I love Klopp but his adherence to mainly one style of play came undone against the very best teams who could counter with speed and skill. Slot has an amazing platform to build on and I'm looking forward to seeing our most creative players hopefully flourish.
The beauty of having Slot implement his ideas at Liverpool is that he has a much better group of players than he had at Feyenoord. Once this Liverpool team gets to grips with his style of play then we should start to look really, really good. I just hope that Slot picks his teams next season based on good balance, even if senior players are left out. It worked last season until the balance seemed to be lost when some senior players game back in towards the end of the season.
