This was released from Tug Of War into heavy rotation on Top 40 radio in summer 1982 going into fall of my senior year of high school. Now it suddenly brings back nostalgia for the people, places and things from that time that no longer exist. I can't recall any other song written using the unconventional C Major 7 / F# chord. It is creative genius, like all of the ingredients that give this song a unique sound.

A lot of those 1st Wave British groups got a second wind in the early 1980's. John Lennon had a good one in Nobody Told Me and the Kinks and the Stones also came back strong. The late 1970's and early 1980's were good for rock music.

I was about 12 years old when this song/record came out, and I think it was my hook into the world of the Beatles. I think it was important as a young person to have a new song from a then classic artist to latch on to. By that time, The Beatles had been broken up for 12 years and they were a band for a prior generation. If you are an old black guy or not you would really love Paul and Carl Perkins little special. Carl explains to Paul that he learned the wonderful gospel rhythms while he picked cotton. Two real gentlemen. Just search both their names together on YT. Cheers.
I still like the Coming Up video ( it was just him & Linda )
@@jamesconklin120 the one where he played everyone but her? That was a fantastic one.
Blue Coyote Linda had two parts , she was both backup singers
Paul proves one again that not only is he an incredible song writer, he knows damn well what sounds perfect. Thick and dry drums, fat bass, and those velvety harmonies sounded PERFECT on AM radio. I've such fond memories of hearing this for the first time on a crummy transistor radio, and it sounded so good.
Great analysis 👍. First heard it on the radio riding in the backseat of my parents car. Takes me back every time I hear it!
No offense, loved Wings, but a lot of Paul's stuff is sped up Swing with Motown/R&B horns. Swing lyrics.
It's a good formula, but not exactly original or innovative.
@@catholicdad no offense, but Swing with Motown horns is just people singing and playing instruments, sometimes with lyrics. Good formula, but not exactly original.
@@zGollumI'm not sure I can disagree with your comment 😁
I didn't know Ringo played percussion on this song! Wow! mini-Beatles reunion!
+38yofrmut There has been a lot of them, though. And it's the 5th beatle on the piano.
+Sylvain Chuzeville I love to see Sir George Martin too!
+jellyfishattack George Martin RIP. A true legend now sleeps with angels.
And Steve Gadd in the video. And John Hurt as the "Empresario".
He played the whole album
IMO this is the best single Sir Paul did i the 80's
+Doobie1975 Yes, his best with Wings was Mull of Kintyre, but that was earlier. I love this song and the fact that Paul had Ringo, Linda and Sir Gorge Martin in the video, as well as John Hurt.
1. Take It Away
2. Pretty Little Head
One of the best didn’t say say say come out in the 80s
Indeed
Paul's music is really huge in my family. I'm a 70's kid and my older sisters and cousins literally molded me into being a Paul/Beatles fan and a fan of just about every band we all know and love. They used to explain songs saturated in rock and roll myths but I still long to be back in those days. I miss how good the old days used to feel.
Paul McCartney is my top favourite Beatles member of the group. I loved and love him and Wings. R.I.P. Linda McCartney
Macca is such a fucking legend..
I was just a kid of 9 when this song came out. I had grown up listening to Wings, so it was exciting to hear Paul McCartney come out with a new tune. I wasn’t disappointed! I literally obsessed over this song! When MTV showed it or when it was on the radio, you best believe the volume was cranked up and I sang my heart out with it 😊 Still love it today!
this is such a quality song that I played over and over as a 10 year old in the 80s.paul and those other three guys have had such a resounding effect on my life. I finally got to see Paul a few years ago at the bok in Tulsa, and man, it was worth the wait! this song brings back so many memories for me. he had some chart hits in the 80s that he doesn't do. such a shame, those songs are just as great as his early material. this song stands out, reminds me of Okc at early am mornings before the sun came up. me and my mom would be going home from her bar. seeing the city lights. miss those days and my mom. thanks Paul.
I have to go to the BOK some day for a concert. The place looks gorgeous.
👍 🇬🇧 !
If anybody was ever born to perform it was Paul McCartney
Really ! I thought it was Donnie Trump .....
@@bobbychelsea4248 then you're thick.
Linda's bacing vocals were highly underrated, a beautiful voice
k
mrlafayette1964 beautiful woman too back then
Based on isolated tracks when live- perhaps not.
Not underrated.
I always liked her voice.
When I was a kid, Macca only had to show his face on telly and it made my day! The chords in the verse are so sweetly nostalgic and jazzy. It really made an impression on me, this song. Thumbs aloft, as they used to say...
Does anyone else get goosebumps at the harmony and bassline from 0:53-0:56
The whole song is a goosebump for me
@@juanwhatelse Same here. That beginning bassline is epic.

UNBELIEVABLE Paul is God. This song is a masterpiece! It's not just good Pop, it's beyond that. It's perfect, a perfect song. And unreal bass line, of course.
And drums
He's not God OK!! He's just a very talented musician, gifted by God.
@@robertphillips2983 There is no God, OK!! There is only Paul.
And me.
@@miguelribeiro3103 Yes sir Miguel. I agree. Drummers are SO damned essential to the making of a good band. I'm a bassist and I absolutely love the drums and drummers.
@@robertphillips2983 He's bigger than God! No wait, that was The Rutles...
Absolutely love this song. The arrangement is a delight and it is beautifully played by the entire band. And the harmonies are angelic. Sir Paul is a gift to the music lovers of the world.
This is one od my favorite Paul songs. This song is 40 years old but it still sounds fresh. Greetings from Aleksandra, Zagreb, Croatia 🇭🇷❤️😊
Now more than ever, seeing Macca and Ringo together is very nice!!!
I'm on a Paul McCartney deep dive and I just watched this video for the first time ever. I've known the song for a while since I grew up with Wingspan, but I've rediscovered what a great song it is and this video brings it alive
Sir Paul is on another level >>> pure pop perfection
Love this song. Paul is a world treasure. A genius.
There's a 10cc vibe in this song. Especially those ahhhs
The Eric Stewart influence?
Such a fantastic happy song - invoking the reggae-pop style of The Police but with Paul’s always original and beautiful sensibilities - seeing the late John Hurt, the great actor, in this video plus Linda and all of the people no longer with us is a gut punch but the song is so exhilarating that I listen to it again and again…
Just one of a handful of true legends from back in my day, the like of never to be seen again, this mans sheer musicality is way beyond us mere mortals.
One of his very best. Can't help tapping my toes, raising my voice, shaking my head and punching the air! The man can do no wrong! Released on June 26, 1982, reaching # 10 on August 21
Every time I see this video, I think "Holy crap, it's John Hurt!"
Then I remember it's Paul McCartney, so who wouldn't want to work with him?
To quote David Lee Roth
“When I die, sprinkle my ashes across the 80’s”
Amen
Heard this today at my chiropractor's office. Picked up on it immediately. Said " I know that song from years ago!" Now on my phone and, I have listened to it at least 20 times. Love the back singing and, most of all the ending. So much energy in that ending. Love this tune!
Thanks for the JOY you brought...RIP John Hurt
Love this song...kept playing this song over and over...when we had LPs!! Very catchy tune and I love the concept of the video from way back when until then- Was so cool to see Ringo, George Martin, etc in it!!
You take any struggling band, add Paul, and the band takes off. Shows you how much difference that level of talent makes.
This is a great song. Really love how the brass section dominates. High energy, just love it over and over again.
I love how unpredictable Paul is as arranging...the pace never changes but so many different angles just beautiful !!!
For some reason, and 41 years later this song leapt into my head. I still knew the lyrics to about 50% of the song. Nice.
What a combination. Paul, Linda, Ringo, Eric Stewart, George Martin.... ♥️🎵
Steve Gadd as well:-)
@@Tunz909 Drummers are SO important to any band. I'm a bass player and if the drummer is mediocre it throws me and everyone else off. I drummers!!!!

@@MikeMaxwell1961 Thanks for the kind words, but it's just rote learning really......I started piano at around 6 or 7 years of age....I actually quit piano when the Beatles came out when I was around 12 and started guitar lessons. That lasted only a year or so, I have thick fingers and it was just too hard for me to scrunch them up and get calluses on the tips of my fingers.....went back to piano and it's so much easier...all you do is push down....then Macca started playing piano in "Lady Madonna"/Hey Jude/Let It Be/......Billy Joel and Elton became popular....I was doing well, then I got too serious and wound up at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ma.:-)..or as they call it "Bezerklee;-) thanks for chiming in!! Song today in my heart is "Vienna" Billy Joel!!
Paul was always reinventing himself.
I remember hearing this in the summer of '82. I loved it. I was 14.
Actor Jon Hurt in this video too. Such a great melody and love how the song begins with the chorus....
A fantastic song, you can't help but smile every time you hear this. Paul is the greatest. (Can't beat getting Linda, Ringo, and George Martin in the vid, too!)
Also Eric Stewart and Steve Gadd😎
It has been exciting to hear this song again after almost 40 years.
I didn't remember it, it was a rediscovery.
The truth is that they are two songs in one:
The happy and rhythmic part,
and then the sweet and melodic one, an excellent mix as this musical genius has done so many times.
Thank you Paul for beautifying the world!!
The piano, the horn section... Paul's voice. He sure put some good songs together.
No joke, I heard this song once in 1988 when I was 9 and have been looking for it ever since. Incredible track.
Good Lord, Steve Gadd at :12!
I always loved the drums on this song, now I know why.
Just great, love it, and always lovely to see Linda - :-)
pixi loc Always got bad press but she was the choice of the greatest pop and rock legend of alltime! That is good enough for me anyway Linda was lovely and provided many superb harmonies on all Pauls music from the end of the beatles! Very underated was Linda. This was the woman who provided the middle section to the classic Live and let die!
Without a doubt, one of his greatest songs, and sadly not played anywhere near as much as it should be. Got the album. Love the brass, the background vocals with Linda and Eric, Ringo on drums. What a talent! Rock on Paul!
the other drummer was steve gadd .....did one of the most famous drum solos ever for steely dan "aja"
A lot of those 1st Wave British groups got a second wind in the early 1980's. John Lennon had a good one in Nobody Told Me and the Kinks and the Stones also came back strong. The late 1970's and early 1980's were good for rock music.
Absolutely couldn’t have said it better myself
John Lennon also had just like starting over, watching the wheels n woman in 1980...arguably his best 3 solo songs minus jealous guy😎😎😎😎
As were the early 70s, late 60s, mid 60s and early 60s. Also the 50s.
That Linda McCartney was beautiful. A heart stopper.
The Lovely Linda.
One of the best songs I have ever heard. I often listen to it over and over again.

Watched this great video so many times on MTV, summer of 1982. Worked late nights at a truck stop restaurant, just out of high school. Would come home, fix a bowl of cereal, sit down on the floor in front of the TV, turn on MTV and chill for a while before going to bed at about 7:00am. Good times.
Way back in the day, when MTV actually played music.
You're lucky you survived working a truck stop night shift and not ended up on a milk carton.
Lol before I was even born (1983)
My, you've lived a fascinating life
Great song AND great lyrics!!! That last verse is brilliant.
Beautiful song and beautiful man
I was about 12 years old when this song/record came out, and I think it was my hook into the world of the Beatles. I think it was important as a young person to have a new song from a then classic artist to latch on to. By that time, The Beatles had been broken up for 12 years and they were a band for a prior generation. This song, which has an 80s sound and was made for my generation, inspired me to embrace Beatles nation. Artists should take note. Keep making music no matter how old you get. The younger fans appreciate it and will extend your legacy.
I was in the audience scene.I got in via the Wings Fan Club.
Great song, cool video. Paul was undoubtedly the musical heart of the Beatles.
I heard this song on my mom's old clock radio when I was a 6 year old little girl. I never knew who sang it though because I was not into who sang songs back then. All on you is that it kept saying take it away. I love the song though and it still is my favorite Paul McCartney song to this very day
Saw Mc & Wings, Atlanta, Ga 1974... Greatest live show ever... Rest in Peace, Linda and Jimmy..
Just on a Macca reminise-fest after seeing his Glastonbury set. I was 10 when this came out and I absolutely loved it. This song lead me to the most amazing treasure trove - his back catalogue.

Great video, song , arrangement. It always amazed me how many great songs Paul wrote through the years. Loved seeing George Martin, Linda , and Ringo in this.
I think that "Tug of War" is Paul's all-time best album. My father gifted me in 1981. Every track is a piece of art without exception.
Reminds me of early '80s when I met my two best friends Debbie and Kathy in college. Rarely see them, but still feel close♥
