      Hi, (I only use Food Grade Diamataceous Earth)
      So I'm thinking that perhaps the diamataceous earth was cleaning out your intestines (from maybe a build up) and that could be another reason but, yes we don't want to dry out the good bugs and the bad as well.
      Pets;
      I only use very little in Cats food as it is per pound and then less IF on a medicine. So in that case I give 1x per month but, also put some on the scruff and back ...I also, found putting it on the coat CAN dry it out.
      I just put a bit in my Vitamin Bottles to keep them from sticking in the very humid Texas weather and use it to keep the carpet dry as well!!!
      Use it in my stored containers of bagged; Nuts, Rice, Pet Food, etc
      Silica is what's in those little Stay Fresh packets fyi. Luckily, I use Solgar Vitamins and are not present in their stock.

    Hello Heidi! Was thinking of you today...
    During my battle with symptoms 2 years ago I made this blend (ended up being a brain tumor, not arthritis or anything else causing my aches and foot pain). Because it was helping with pains, made another batch.
    I finally strained the oil, TODAY!!! 😆
    It's so dark and lovely (smells perfect too). No idea what I'll use it for as i have no pains. But I've got it.
    Thanks so much for your videos and information. ❤️

    Sounds really nice. I think I’ll try a little batch with the few things I have. I don’t have a lot of essential oils but I do have eucalyptus and peppermint. Red pepper flakes and avocado oil. That’s all I have.

    • @patriciabass9502
      @patriciabass9502 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Essential oils are great, but infusing herbs into your oil is plenty enough to make an effective herbal formulation.
      I like using the herbs, but sometimes essential oils are just really more convenient. One, because it takes time to infuse and I don't always have the correct infusions ready when I fornulate. Two, some things are more readily available in Essential oil form.

    Great idea putting ginger in there! My recipe is pretty close to yours that I copied from you. I have Carolina reapers that I’m growing! I don’t think those would be safe to put in there. I also have ghost peppers, habaneros, and a bunch of other hots. Last time I put in my homemade Cayenne pepper/chili pepper. I’ll have to check the Scoville chart to see which peppers I have that are not way up in the millions!!

    I learned the hard way I react violently to capsaicin rubs. I had never had a minutes trouble with pepper (outside of an ornamental pepper incident as a child), though I don't like my food too hot. I tried an OTC capsaicin rub a few years ago and it nearly sent me to the emergency room. I understand this is pretty rare, but just in case, if at the application site you start to look and feel like it's a real burn try what I tried and worked for me. I washed the area well with soapy water, rinsed and made a thick foamy mixture of baking soda and vinegar. I kept applying it as it lost it's foam over and over. The relief started in a minute but it took maybe 15 minutes to half an hour before I could stop.

      I'm on the AIP diet which excludes all nightshades. And because I know it could be absorbed through the skin I made some without any capsaicin. I didn't even have the infused herbs I just used the oil and some essential oils. Although I did put some powdered Ginger and some cloves in the oil to infuse even though I already added the essential oils.

    Have you ever considered trying to use emu oil? This oil is often used for arthritis but does well for aches and pains. My mother- in- law makes a sav with emu oil, peppermint and a couple of other oils and it sure does work good.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I bought it only once. It is a very expensive oil that in my opinion is not worth the expense when the oils I already use are at least as good.

    Here growing cayenne is as easy as crushing a dried pepper where you want to grow it. We dry the peppers and simply throw them into a chopper or food processor for a few pulses and make our own crushed pepper. This would be good for this process as it keeps the heat low, we add jalapeno and banana peppers for crushed pepper seasoning. We made some fermented hot sauce like we do for the tobasco only using Cayenne, it had the biggest pepper flavor ever but no heat, This leads me to believe cayenne would be the best for medicinal purposes where you don't necessarily need the heat. However this does require growing your own as buying the fresh or dried cayenne peppers can be difficult and expensive as most stores only carry the powder

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, however, some peppers wall grow better for some people than others. I have grown cayenne and have done fine with it but because of limited greenhouse space and them only doing good there in our cool and very wet climate, I cannot grow enough. I actually do a bit better with the Chinese 5-color peppers and they are at least as hot as cayenne, and yes, I save the seeds from the dried peppers to start new plants the next year and have use the pepper itself and powdered it. Even have a video showing this. Even then, I go through a lot during the year so I still stock up on cayenne powder and flakes.

    • @oldsouthhomestead7118
      @oldsouthhomestead7118 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RainCountryHomestead I can imagine your struggle, peppers like it hot and dry. Peppers is one of those things we grow a handful for fresh use but only grow a bunch every few years except for cayenne and tobasco which we keep a few year round. they will get many years old if not allowed to freeze. And I know exactly what you mean about greenhouse space it's still an issue even with our big commercial houses.The more greenhouse you have the more it seems to take, no more rows with drip tape and spray tables, winter is everybody packed in and hand watered

I have a comfrey root oil infusion going right now. The last 4 days I have been using a comfrey poultice on my wrist and thumb, De Quervain's tenosynovitis. I could use your ideas on how to grow the arnica from seed. I am in zone 5. One pound of Arnica flowers from Mountain Rose Herbs is $90.00 . Wow. Grow our own right? I went to Frontier Co op, but I couldn't figure out how to order since I am not a wholesaler. Take care and thank you for your time, knowledge and making it nice to listen to 'like minded' people.

    • @christinebean7932
      @christinebean7932 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Comfrey root is more effective. I know about taking Comfrey internally and the root is only to be taken for a short term about 2 weeks as it is hard on the liver (but not as hard as many pharmaceuticals are on it) .
      So you should try to get an answer for your question.
      Be safe.
      I have a cautious nature as I find many who sale herbs are just as greedy and dishonest as big pharma.

      Yes you can but you may have play with the amounts. I would say start with one quarter cup of beeswax to one cup of the oil and allot to set. You can add more of the infused oil or more beeswax to get the desired consistency

    Hi Heidi, I’ve been looking at buying a Comfrey plant in order to use my own home grown leaves for this balm. However I’ve been out off by reading all the warnings about using Comfrey even topically. They say that it’s toxic for the liver! Please can you reassure me in this as I’d love to use this recipe of yours

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it is totally safe for topical uses and if you are using the leaf, it is safe for ingesting in the form of tea, I drink comfrey tea often though not daily. I know some that do drink it daily and have for years. The main concern is using the root internally. There is a lot of fear mongering about many herbs that is creating a lot of confusion and comfrey is one of them.

    I've heard that some people will infuse the oils in the oven (my lowest setting on my oven is 170 degrees), but I'm concerned about losing the medicinal value of the herbs. Would it be possible to infuse the oils in a dehydrator (I have an Excalibur) on maybe a setting of 100 or 105 for a few hours and it be ready to use in a cream or rub? I'd like to make this, but don't want to wait 4-5 months for the oil to infuse. And if you think that will work, how many hours in the dehydrator would you recommend? And I do have avocado oil so it could stand the higher heat.

    • @RainCountryHomestead

      @@mml5794 I really cannot say for sure what would be best for time to get a full infusion. I can only guess really. Maybe start at 10 hours and see if the color of the oil is changing. Again, making sure to shake it up every couple of hours or so. Then you can go for another 10 if it looks weak and just take it from there
