Old video now i know but 35006 Peninsula & Oriental Merchant Navy Class is in preservation at my local heritage line and is my personal favourite, the noise it makes on full chat is phenomenal!! Shame Hornby didnt make it as a model but it was still under restoration until 2016
Hornby has 2 versions of the Merchant Navy. The rebuilt version and original version of the class. The air smooth casing Merchant Navy is going to be in stock soon Sam's Trains.
Bit late but the reason they were classified as mixed traffic is that during the war only mixed traffic locomotives were allowed to me produced, so bullied just changed the classification so that they could still be built.
All the companies were banned from building purely passenger engines during the war but were allowed to build freight and mixed traffic engines. Bullied knew this and called it a mixed traffic engine although it is likely that the only time they pulled freight during the first 20 years of life was the trial carried out to prove it was a mixed traffic locomotive. After seeing the Merchant Navy in 1941 the other companies said we wish we had thought of doing that.
The front of the train reminds me of the 9F which is the 2-10-0 locomotive. But still, awesome locomotive with the beautiful blue color on the train with its black wheels which reminds me of a set of train wheels you see on a Union Pacific locomotive.
Sam I just pre-ordered the new Hornby BR green un-rebuilt Merchent Navy Holland America Line and the new un-rebuillt Merchent Navy Abberdeen Commonwelth in Southern Black :) Great review as always :)
That blue one is amazing and I would love to own one. Great review as usual Sam. I am a bit concerned that someone is sat on the wrong side of the foot bridge parapet.
Yeah! There's not all that many of them about - much more of the green were made I think! Glad you got one though - they're fabulous things! All the best mate, Sam :)
It was magnificent watching a Merchant Navy setting off from Bournemouth West with the set of pullman coaches. The BR Blue only appeared on the un-rebuilt engines during BR days although I agree that it looks excellent in that blue colour. I remember seeing my very first rebuilt merchant navy in about 1956 or 1957. I was on the boating lake in Pool park and my father though that it was a Brittania at first then realised it was a rebuilt Merchant Navy.
I bet that was absolutely magnificent - such an impressive machine. Must have been brilliant to see them in their prime too! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That's sounds good Sam, In fact If you like to ,you can get the new Hornby Holland Africa line (35023) and it has got the tts sound decoder. Also it is in the unrebuilt condition. There are plenty on eBay most with the tts sound but I have found 1 rebuilt Holland Africa line (it is by Hornby) With the normal digital sound but it is a place bid so check that out before it ends on the 8th of March ,I think.
oh that's cool! I bet they were amazing machines - Weren't they troublesome back before they were rebuilt though lol? I guess that was a long time before though! All the best mate, Sam :)
This Famous Locomotive Canadian Pacific Was Built In 1941 For The Southern Railway And It Now Preserved In The Great Central Railway In Loughborough Leicestershire. Thanks Sam'sTrains Mate. X
Sam's Trains I mostly prefer both SR Merchant Navy Class 35018 British India Line (1945) and SR Merchant Navy Class 35028 Clan Line (1948) equally in my personal opinion.
Can someone tell me if it’s normal for a triang to sound like it’s screaming bloody murder as it runs like sams did in the video or if it just due to age. I’m actually quite curious to know.
Ooh that's a good question Daniel - I'm not too sure why that was - I wonder if it was larger on the inside though, with just a small opening in the top? Thanks for watching, Sam :)
suggest that two separate factors are at work. Route mileages were much shortrt on the Southern. There were speed restrictions on the LSWR main line as far out as Surbiton
Thanks Keith - pleased you enjoyed them, these are real favorites! I've just filmed the collection video for this year, so that should be along in a few weeks! Cheers mate, Sam :)
stunning models, i can tell the detail is spot on as i work with 2 bullieds myself, a model one is on my must get list, the br blue looks stunning as always, and a great video on them sam
Oh cool! I've not got one of those - they're good then? Yeah there's not a lot of difference technically though - just a little smaller as you say! All the best, Sam :)
Love everything Bulleid, I've just recently preordered one of new Hornby air smoothed Merchant Navys in BR blue, (its not due in stock until next April though, but I can wait!). I might try to get a rebuilt version too. Thank you for another wonderful review Sam!
Haha not for £170 or whatever ridiculous price they charge! Can't beat the old hornby ones in my opinion... Though I guess the detail will! Cheers, Sam :)
in my opinion the 2000 hornby loco drive are the best hornby ever did i love the merchant wc bob class they just lovely the triang wheels look better to me arp
You have so many loco's that could be described as favourites Sam but these two are stunners for sure. I saw these in BR green in real life so I guess the green is favourite for me. I saw that Bullman was facing backwards, perhaps he didn't like the Tri-ang smell? (but I do). Cheers mate, David.
haha thanks David! I bet these were gorgeous in real life - Is there one at York? If so, I might have seen one too in the flesh! haha yeah maybe Bullman wasn't keen... I like it too though lol! Cheers mate, Sam :)
Hi Sam, how are you? I am from Chile and I wanted to ask you about the dimensions (measurements) of this locomotive, because I understand that in England you use a 00 scale. I have a collection of American and German locomotives that are H0 scale. But now I'm interested in collecting British locomotives. Regards
I love it so much, I watch ur videos every day and there so cool and inspired me to make my own model railway, which I’m extending right now and I ordered a new merchant navy for my railway that’s coming in the mail soon I love the merchant navys

The battle of britain and west country were basically identical - not much difference! The merchant navy was a similar, but smaller design, it came a little earlier! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I recently got Canadian pacific today and she is a lovely model the livery on her is so eye catching and looks great next to my A3 prince palatine (who also is in br blue) great review btw :)
Hi! Awesome that you got a Canadian Pacific - she's really one of my very favorites! I think they're really one of Hornby's best! Thanks very much for the kind words too, All the best mate, Sam :)
great review got the same one in the blue and on my point of view she is a 10/10 for when she is made (she was made in about the year 2000) but now i think its a 8/10 for today still holds up well for 15 years btw great price for the can pac the cheapest when i got it was about 120 so good job.

+Mark Horner I might just continue sitting poised on eBay, hoping to snap one up haha. then again i am a student so the likelihood of my having that sort of disposable income is very slim, unfortunately :(
Absolutely beautiful loco, I was going to buy this model a few years ago but it was £120 so I decided that it wasn't worth it as the model was a poor runner, but never the less the BR blue livery suits this loco beautiful and looks brilliant with those pullmans, great review as always :)
Thanks very much for the kind words! Yeah £120 is a bit much for that, the going rate is around £100 for a used one, but I did get lucky with £90 brand new! All the best mate, Sam :)
Thanks very much! Yeah it's a shame actually - I've just been so busy this year, I've not had much time to get over there, I've been struggling to get my own videos made actually lol! All the best mate, Sam :)
Thanks! Yeah she ran like she was brand new straight out of the box! I really do love these, so I might be a bit biased though lol! All the best, Sam :)
I do love the MNs....amazing machines and well worthy of their place in preservation (blue or green)... In you're videos you've said that you are a fan of the Southern Railway/Region, so perhaps you should know that the wheels are Bulleid Firth Brown types (Bulleid's development of the Boxpok type), and how to pronounce Maunsell (which is what the man actually specified in a meeting) - and it's pronounced 'Man-Sell', and he detested people calling him 'Mourn-Sell'. Just thought I'd help out a bit (for you to bear in mind for next time you talk about the wheels or the Southern Railway CME :)
Thanks for the comment Phil - I agree, just fantastic machines! Oops sorry about that - hopefully he won't have heard me saying his name wrongly! Thanks for the tips, Sam :)
Hi mate - I can only offer servicing and very basic repairs - so it depends on what's wrong. Feel free to drop me an email for any enquiries :3 Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ooh you may be right about that - I did read that one of them had a terrible accident - I'm not sure whether or not it was the casing that caused it though, maybe? Thanks again for watching, Sam :)
Haha yeah... Almost right! For fun, and hidden quirky realism, it does actually power the LEDs in the factory - there's a little dynamo in the nacelle which gets turned too, since the motor I used is way more powerful than it needs to be... Pointless of course, but a fun (secret) project! You can see the power lines that come from it too! :D
Hi, thanks very much! No sadly they're not, since they came from 2000 before DCC was a thing! They are very easy to fit decoders in though, since there's lots of space, and exposed wires which you can cut and add the chip! All the best, Sam :)
Old video now i know but 35006 Peninsula & Oriental Merchant Navy Class is in preservation at my local heritage line and is my personal favourite, the noise it makes on full chat is phenomenal!! Shame Hornby didnt make it as a model but it was still under restoration until 2016

Good idea, that could be good! :D
I didn't get a pop up but my favourite was the bibby line.
That's okay Adam - glad you liked Bibby line! :D

There isnt one
#35020 "Bibby Line" was built at Eastleigh Works on .... hmmm doesn'y say. Does say it was withdrawn in February 28th, 1965
Oh right no worries, but yeah that's right they were all withdrawn between 1963 and 1967!
Cheers mate,

That blue one is amazing and I would love to own one. Great review as usual Sam. I am a bit concerned that someone is sat on the wrong side of the foot bridge parapet.
haha thanks Philip - thanks for mentioning that - I'll pop up and make sure nobody's planning to do anything silly lol

A question for anyone why is the coal bunker on a merchant navy class smaller than other pacific class locomotives?
Ooh that's a good question Daniel - I'm not too sure why that was - I wonder if it was larger on the inside though, with just a small opening in the top?

Sam'sTrains according to the Hornby forums out of 5 tenders the actual class had. Hornby has only made 2 types out of that class's tenders so far.

haha thanks Alex - yeah £90 was a real steal for her actually! :D Glad you liked her anyway! :D
All the best mate,
Sam :)
I can't find any information on 35005
Not to worry mate - thanks for watching anyway! :)
Cheers,
Sam :)
is the BB/wc, class spitfire
Yeah it is - it's just like this, but a little smaller!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
ok cool
sam great vid but how come you and john don't any videos with each other no more
Thanks very much! Yeah it's a shame actually - I've just been so busy this year, I've not had much time to get over there, I've been struggling to get my own videos made actually lol!
All the best mate,
Sam :)
6:24 They were air smoothed not streamlined
Yeah that's true - I just called them streamlined for want of a better term - 'air smoothed' slipped my mind!
Cheers,
Sam :)
great vid man :) :) she a really good runner for her age and has good detail and for a good price to all the best :)
Thanks! Yeah she ran like she was brand new straight out of the box! I really do love these, so I might be a bit biased though lol!
All the best,
Sam :)
Thanks for the tips,
Sam :)
Sam,how much do you charge to fix a loco?
Hi mate - I can only offer servicing and very basic repairs - so it depends on what's wrong. Feel free to drop me an email for any enquiries :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
can pac will return to steam in a couple years
That's fantastic news - I'd love to see that one run!
All the best,
Sam :)
I'm pretty sure although I could be wrong but I think that it's air smoothing but it was terrible and caused a massive accident
Ooh you may be right about that - I did read that one of them had a terrible accident - I'm not sure whether or not it was the casing that caused it though, maybe?
Thanks again for watching,
Sam :)
Yeah I think it was Spitfire but I'm not sure about that one.
Mr Magu Lego it was jinxed engine it was
Do you have any trains 🚂 with DCT smoke?
Hi Steve! No I don't actually - I tend to remove my smoke units!
All the best,
Sam :)
There is something special about Bulleid's pacifics dont jou think. Its Nothing Like a priness coronation class ore a Britannia. Cheers Rob
Oh yeah, definitely - I love them too! I agree, I don't know what it is really!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
Your wind turbine must be one of the only ones in the country that USES electricity instead of generating it! ;)
wow! that's interesting!
Nice locos . I too prefer the blue one 😁 Can you tell me if they are DCC ready ?
Hi, thanks very much! No sadly they're not, since they came from 2000 before DCC was a thing! They are very easy to fit decoders in though, since there's lots of space, and exposed wires which you can cut and add the chip!
All the best,
Sam :)
Isn't it not a rebuilt Merchant Navy.
Yes it is, that's right! :)
