How to Do a Self Breast Exam, According to a Pro | Ingrid Nilsen

  • We’re all told we should be doing self breast exams, but the reality is that most of us end up with tons of questions swirling in our heads when we attempt to do one. Things like: Am I doing this right? What should I be looking for? How often should I be doing this? I feel lots of stuff in there! Is that normal? Okay, I think I found something. Now what? Should I be concerned? If I’m being completely honest, self breast exams have always scared me. I’m afraid of doing it wrong and missing something. I’m afraid of doing it right and finding something. That’s why I’ve made this video. My goal is to take the mystery and fear out of the process by providing simple, easy to follow steps and tips from a pro. Jennifer Hankins, a Provider with One Medical will be guiding us through the self exam steps and answering questions that most of have, but sometimes are afraid to ask.
    Body awareness is the most important part of self breast care. Knowing your body and recognizing changes outside of a scheduled monthly self check is appropriate for many women. You can always talk to your healthcare provider to see what's best for you.
    Think of this as the ultimate form of self-care and connection. ️❤️
    I’m doing #selfexamsunday this weekend! If you want to join, post a selfie after you do a self exam and I’ll share them in my IG stories. Make sure to use the hashtag #selfexamsunday and tag @ingridnilsen so I can find it!
    I'm not affiliated with One Medical in any way other than being a happy patient. I've paid for and used their service for the last year and it has been the easiest, most streamlined, ENJOYABLE medical care experience I've ever had. They have locations across the U.S. so if you're interested in learning more, check out their website: www.onemedical.com

    WEEKLY UPDATE: I seriously don’t know what’s happening to TIME right now. It feels like every week is just flying by! My friend Carrie has been visiting from LA for the last few days and it has been so wonderful having her here. I’ve forgotten how much I love having friends stay over at my place, but after two consecutive weeks of visits, I have officially been reminded! I have to say that since being in NYC, I have been so much more social. It definitely isn’t about proximity because most of my close friends live in LA. So what is it then? I think it’s a lot of things, but it all stems from one big thing: New York is the place where I have always wanted to live. Yes, it’s a hectic city but I feel so at peace here. I’ve kind of broken all the standard “rules” you hear about, like New Yorkers not cooking. I’ve cooked the vast majority of my meals here, including meals with other people. I’m learning how to make this MY New York, not the New York you read about or see in movies. I think that’s it. I’ve found love here and it has made me more daring, more free and more open. All the best love I know has felt that way, but it has never come from a place before. It’s a feeling I’m drinking in and gosh, I’m grateful for it. ️

    Well done Ingrid! Women need to learn how their body is evolving. I found my first benine breast tumor when I was only 17 and it was after a self exam. Thanks also for reassuring everyone: if you find something, don't freak out, it is not very talked about but for the most part they are not bad tumors.

      Salut Myriam compatriote francaise :-) que faire qd on trouve un kyste bénin, faut il quand meme le traiter et l enlever ou on peut laisser ? Merci !

    • @MissMymooReads
      @MissMymooReads 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@beautifulboucles il faut quand même aller consulter un gynécologue qui le palpera et demandera une échographie mammaire. Après, s'il s'avère que c'est vraiment bénin, pas d'urgence pour l'enlever, seulement si cela devient trop inconfortable. Ça reste une "boule" qui est là mais sans plus. Et sinon la chirurgie est vraiment très simple et le sein est totalement préservé après, rien à voir avec les chirurgies du cancer du sein 😉

      Omg yes please. I had a really bad one once who made me feel like I was wasting her time for coming in when I didn’t have a concern. I was just doing what I thought was right and trying to establish a doctor patient relationship and do annual check ups. I didn’t realize that doctor was a bad egg for years but when I finally made a switch I found the best doctor ever, and am lucky to have her. She’s all about making patients feel comfortable and even gets me laughing.

    Great video! Ive done 7 years of university in the applied health and kinesiology department, and although the program is amazing and the profs are fantastic at what they teach, usually at the end of courses (especially Anatomy, Physiology, and Assessment courses) the reproductive system health is cut short because of time constraints, or because when we encounter a reproductive problem we just refer patients for further advanced care. Learning how to take care of your own body though, and being able to advise patients if they come across unusual bumps is invaluable information for myself and them. If I have been treating a patient for months for an ACL tear, and they trust me enough to ask about a lump in their breast, I feel like knowing this simple technique, or even referring them to this video would be a fantastic resource to utilize.. Im disappointed in my university degree and high school health lectures to not have learned something as simple as this for a preventative measure. Thank you Ingrid for giving us the basics, and asking questions that many girls, including myself, would have a hard time asking in uni lectures! Keep up this kind of content

    Dear Ingrid!
    I have been watching your videos since years and years... And I know that this particular video is not one of your most viewed ones, alongside with other ones that are more.. I don't know.. meaningful in a way. (Don't get me wrong, I really love your style, fashion, skincare videos, but I guess that those are more popular among bigger audiences) All I wanted to say that I continue to love your videos and your work that you do here, and I believe you are truly an influencer in a very good way. And as a woman and as a medical student, I would like to thank you for this video, and for all of those that are about physical or mental health, because this is the type of content that we don't get in a big dose, but I think many of us really appreciate and need it!

    Thank you Ingrid and thank you Jennifer! This video will help so many women. I'm ashamed to say that despite being in my mid 20s I very rarely do self exams due to not knowing what I'm looking for! Now that I understand it's just about getting familiar with what's normal, I'm going to make sure to do them more often :)

    thanks so much! what an important video. I think most of us younger people think we don't need to worry about breast cancer until we are in our 30s or 40s, my close friend in her twenties found a lump and had it biopsied last week. Hopefully it is benign, but she's lucky she found it in any case.
