  • This is how I usually go about leveling but with a brand new players experience in mind. When you finally hit 80, focus the rest of the personal story for gear. Be sure to do your dailies as soon as you have the waypoints. 2 gold a day can pay for your crafting!! Hope this helps!!

      JeLLy damn now i need to watch the whole vid again... 😂
      But basically just do the startmap and personal story, while getting known to your Charracter until u can do the first dungeon. Level up for unlocking the next dungeons for better rewards and collecting their currency for buying exotic armor at lvl 80.
      I would personally recommend to finish all important world boss maps if it is not a charracter specified for one gamemode like pvp or raiding. Also keep in mind to collect the daily login reward if u are really looking forward to lvl that charracter up as fast as possible. If this charracter is one of your favourites, u should defenitely teach em a job and pleeeeease a job that the charracter can also use for own weapons/armor.
      And now have fun leveling.
      Just waisted another 15 minutes for writing an answer that was 1 sentence long.

    Some things I want to point out:
    The character shown in the video is of the Revenant profession and is only available with the Heart of Thorns expansion
    Free to play players (No expansions)
    - not allowed to enter the main cities until level 10
    - not allowed to enter lion's arch until level 35
    Players with Heart of Thorns:
    - if you join a guild with guild boosts you can get a free 10% exp boost that helps a lot (there are also exp boosts for crafting, pvp, wvw etc)
    Personally, I recommend skipping most hearts unless they are short and quick, because a lot of hearts take ages to complete and give the same amount of exp so going for vistas, hero points and points of interests instead will save you a lot of time. You can come back later at level 80 with much better gear to complete the hearts faster for map completion.
    I'd also avoid using scouts (telescope icon NPCs) to show the location of new places because discovering them yourself also gives exp.
    If you don't have the Path of Fire expansion and mounts, the buff 'Swiftness' is your best friend. It makes travelling across maps much faster and enjoyable, so use skills that give you swiftness as much as possible.
    Warrior's greastword skill #3 and #5 and utility skill 'Bull's Charge', and Thief's shortbow skill #5 are fantastic skills to help you travel around even faster
    Killing mobs with yellow names grant extra bonus exp compared to killing mobs with red names so you should kill basically everything in your way :)
    Good video, I'll definitely share it with my friends who want to try the game for the first time :)

    • @SoulSin
      @SoulSin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Using the scouts don't really waste your experience. They show part of the map and hide then again.
      They are actually, a good way to identify Hearts on maps. Since some of then can be hiding on corners and are harder to find.

    Should always mention to set up the game options to AoE looting. Explain that u can save space by sending all materials to your bank instantly. Explaining to keep a salvage kit handy to salvage items for materials. Set AoE to snap target enemies to enable quicker and easier casting. Explain that this game gives a ton of loot in which if you see storage on sale take advantage to buy storage upgrades. Explain that the storage is shared across all characters and if you plan to make another character to save weapons or gear for that character as u level up your first character. If you dont craft your own food there are certain low level areas to buy cheap food/utilities that will increase exp gain 20% as you fight. Also doing achievements as you level will grant special skins and PERMANENT boosts across all characters. Karma, exp, gold, etc.

    Good advice. As someone that has leveled each class to 80, most of them the challenging long way, one piece of advice I have is: during your map completion segments, look for sparsely traveled patches in zones. You'll notice when you kill mobs, it gives you an XP reward and, frequently, bonus XP rewards. Bonus XP is time dependent; the longer a mob is alive, the more valuable it becomes. There will be instances where your bonus XP is 150% on top of the regular XP reward. Couple that with foods from the store or one that you crafted, and both are multiplied by 10% or so.

  • @patchup
    @patchup 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Nice Guide. I 100% agree that your first character should never be rushed. The way the game is designed, lower level zones are still highly trafficked by veteran players. Many World Bosses are in the lower level areas. Player levels are adjusted down to fit the level of the zone so you will not feel too overpowered.
    I also suggest asking to group for events or even join a squad. You simply get more credit for kills this way. Sometimes a group will have a commander or mentor leading it. A commander will be someone with a chevron or a cat-face icon on the map. A mentor will have an apple icon. Some maps will have event "trains" which will almost always be a huge zerg of players.

    6:33 LMAO "Avoid Southsun Cove". That is some good advice, the enemies hit pretty hard there. This is a really helpful video! Especially the part about unlocking Lion's Arch early on so you can go there whenever. The part at 12:59 is good too. I remember as I was reaching higher levels, only buying armor for my character every like three to five levels. There's things that you can equip at like every single level, it'd be a waste of your hard-earned money to spend it on things at every level and not wait a bit.
    Thank you for making this!

    Here's how I do it when I play the game
    1. Make a new toon.
    2. Get past the first little story/tutorial mission
    3. Get to level 10
    4. Open the pvp menu
    5. Enter the pvp area
    6. Pvp until I have at least 80 tomes of knowledge
    7. Repeat until you have so many tomes you can't spend them all.
    8. Have a bunch of level 80 toons

    As someone who has played since launch, the best way to lvl up is...#1: run through all the towns first. This will get you somewhere around lvl 10 before you even face an enemy. #2: start on the 1-15 maps and do EVERYTHING! Especially the hearts! Hearts will give you a lot of XP and you will learn how to play your class as you go. That’s pretty much it! Now as you collect mats n items along the way you can start crafting to lvl up a bit, but since you won’t have much gold or mats, that won’t get you very far, but it’s good for a few lvls. Another way to lvl is Edge of the Mists. IDK if they do zergs in there anymore, but there used to be zergs going on all the time.

    I only do events when they help me complete the heart in the area they happen. events give very small exp and are mainly there to farm Karma not exp. the only exception to this is group boss events. those give a fair amount of exp and sometimes good items. I only do exp this way until level 30. at which point I begin to do dungeons on story mode and repeat them. they are short, they give a massive chunk of exp, and a decent amount of gold for the mats you gather inside. The diminishing return is not that much and mostly effects item rewards. the kill exp and the final reward are not that reduced. meaning I can do a dungeon and the first run i get 65% of my total exp required to level the first time and then repeat for 40% over and over again to level every 3 runs. this scales at your level so that means a level 50 can do the level 40 dungeon and level up every 3 trips all the way to level 80. I still explore maps but I do them while I wait for dungeons and usually only the non heart parts of the map like vista, waypoints, point of interest, and hero points. I go back later to do hearts when I run out of same or lower level content to explore. I do break every 10 levels to do my story missions tho.
    oh and for the cities. do not explore them completely until higher level like 70+ the reason is the exp for completing those maps unlike the level set zones SCALE with your current level. meaning if you do them at level 10 you might get 2k exp as a final reward for completing the maps... however if you wait until level 70 you will get 52k exp it will complete the same % of your exp bar BUT at a higher level its a cheap and easy way to get exp so you don't have more grinding to do.

The biggest challenge and enjoyable moment was running from Divinity's Reach to Plains of Ashford which took about three hours.

    A year late but for what it's worth, there's a little bit of math to leveling with crafting. Specifically, every crafting profession from 1 to 400 will grant you enough exp for 7 levels. If you go from 1 to 500 that's ten levels, and exp boosters apply to this (so long as the exp boost says all exp and not just kills). It's more valuable to hold off on crafting while leveling until the last stretch, as that last 10 levels will take significantly longer than your first 10 levels. In summary, i recommend waiting until you hit about level 60 to do your crafting. Two professions will give you 14 levels without boosters. If you have money and exp boosters available, check the gw2crafts.net website for prices and level the "cheapest" professions with the booster. If you level 5 professions all the way to 500 with a booster that will put you at level 75, which tomes of knowledge can knock those last bits out. Leveling cooking is a guaranteed 7 (or 10) levels for you, so save those levels for later, just like your tomes!

    Great guide. While I'm new to Guild Wars 2, I spend a number of years playing WoW so the basic game mechanics aren't totally foreign to me. I did learn some things that should make leveling easier. And yes I used a level 80 boost on a character I specifically set up to use it on (not my first which I'm still leveling). This was primarily to unlock mounts which I feel should have been handled as you leveled rather than being end game only to acquire. So far I'm really enjoying the game and the lack of set quest chains is something I'm really enjoying vs how WoW did thngs.

      @arentol99 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes me too. The surprise for me was the focus on exploration - just wander around an area and see what events/activities come up. Sounds like after clearing a map, the player just moves on to the next map. Not sure how I feel about it all, to be honest.

    • @PennieLane77
      @PennieLane77 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arentol99 I kinda like that events come up, kinda like quests. So that's cool.
      No character seems to have a role so to speak. There isn't your run of the mill tank, or healer that sort of the thing. I liked that about DAoC.
      Not as grind heavy either. You level rather quickly in this game. It's like a more streamlined mmo/rpg.

    Why do you need to use the Lion's Arch portals? No matter the character the first way point in each starting zone is automatically unlocked. You can easily skip the Lion's Arch step to travel from starting zone to starting zone.

      @CommonTate  6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      If your a new player you don't know where all the starting zones are. You can comb the map for waypoints but I thought the LA portals where easiest from a new player point of view.

    one thing that really made me not get into Guild Wars 2 is the non-linear game-play, I just wasn't used to it. I was used to following a certain story-line really closely or being told what to do. And so when I played GW2, I felt directionless. I'm not saying that the openness of GW2 is bad, it's just wasn't what I was used to and liked. I also didn't like the lack of different and unique skills/spells unlike traditional MMO's where you get a bunch of flashy skills even for a warrior class. Again this is just me being so used to that type and liking different spells, which made GW2's combat felt a little dull for me. But I want to try and get into this game as I know there's great content pass that first 20-30 levels. I really wanna like this game, its just that for some people, feeling directionless can be a turnoff and uncomfortable, same thing for real life.

    Just play through the maps. Start with the cities. Run through the 5 or so cities & get the free xp from those. You’ll be like lvl 20+ most likely by the time you start your race’s starting map. Then do all the 1-15 starting maps, then do all the 15-30 maps n so on. You will be leveling up fast. Make sure you get all the WP, POI & hearts you can do on each map. Also run around as much as you can to unlock the areas on each map. Head back to Lions Arch once every 5-10 lvls to buy new armor & weapon. Just buy green armor. Don’t worry about the extra stats on the armor, just get the cheapest armor you can. Wait til you get to lvl 20+ before you do the story. Do a few quests there & then go back to mapping.

    Quick thing I wanted to point out as a new player =
    Finding a group for a dungeon is actually not that hard. Looking for group gave me 2 open groups with no waiting at all and both for story mode.
    If you don't find any, just advertise your own group. I'm sure many new players come there and just leave if they don't find any group.
    At least that works in the first dungeon and with barely any waiting time at all...can't say for the other ones since I'm not there yet.

    Note to all of you who own a F2P account : *Also*
    Don't not waste your time leveling up a free to play account because the amount of free content are insanely a disappointment. Content included are : PvP, WvW , Personal Story and that's is pretty much it.(And you can't join any big real life prizes events like the recent one: Roller Beetle
    Racing Event)
    No matter if you finish the whole map, they won't be giving you cool shit that you can show off with or anything impressive. Not saying its unfair either since its F2P. I'm only stating this because I want to recommend you to buy any expansions of this game and i guaran fucking tee you , ArenaNet(developer) themselves with gift you humongously.
    The expansion contents are highly recommended by 87% of GW veterans and i'm pretty sure its wont be wasting your money or your time, Don't worry.

    Levels 1-5: 100% starting cities and LA
    5-11: 100% 1 starting area
    11-17: 100% other 4 starting area’s
    Then move on to the next level areas
    Then the next

    This is the slower way to level. You could just kill enemies off the beaten path that have not been killed in a while. They provide a ton of xp and they are weaker so you can kill ones up to 10 levels higher. Get to 80 from one in about 17 hours if you do it slowly.

    Two things I'd also suggest for anyone's first character leveling.
    1: Do map completion for all the starting zones. Believe me, by completing every zone, you'll be getting essentially a solid 40-50 levels worth of EXP just from those zones alone. Add in completion for all the major cities and that's even better.
    2: Look for the "Tutorial" subcategory of Achievements under the General tab. There's a whole list of rather simple tasks you can do that reward you with Stat boosting items, movement speed boosting items, exp boosting items, decent early leveling gear, and most importantly, an item that teleports you to an exclusive location in the Human major city that holds every crafting station, a Bank, a Trading Post, a Mystic Forge (very important for endgame gearing) and even Guild Vendors.

    well great guide and still its not a bad idea to buy gear like every 10 lvl so its might just cost less than 30 silver with fine or master + good and useful sigils and runes if u search for a good lvl parts but some how thing might be a drag to do so but it give tons of power to do some events solo or due with other low lvl players and u might wish to buy some food and consum foods early game or if u dont have trading post at early game u can ask ppl in say chat and they will buy it for u for sure cus gw2 has a nice and friendly community still it will give u tons of extra exp which can be really helpful.enjoy the game and goodluck.

    Been wondering about this. GW2 was almost too overwhelming for me. One of the reasons I can't get into WoW. They give you a really short basic tutorial then throw you into the deep end and expect you to know what to do and look for while leveling. I really wish they had some dungeon feature for lower levels. I don't mind killing things if I know at the end of it all I'll be getting some sort of loot for my character, but simply helping these NPCs is so tedious. It seems I have to grind 4 or 5 hearts just to gain 1 level. At that rate it would take roughly 320 hearts to get to max level (minus the discovering of vistas, hero points, etc). That's still an insane amount of tedious grinding just to get to the fun part of the game. :\

    • @CommonTate
      @CommonTate  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find this interesting. I think the hearts could be better but are certainly less grindy than a traditional questing system. If all you've been doing are the hearts, you'll probably get burnt out pretty fast. Are you opposed the helping NPCs via events? Are you uninterested in leveling via general exploration? Gw2 grants xp for doing a little bit of everything. This can be a little overwhelming as well as freeing. I do agree that a the leveling experience feels like it's missing more direction and was hoping to help lay it out with this video. I'm sorry I failed to do that

    • @Quacker_Gaming
      @Quacker_Gaming 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      CommonTate I wouldn't mind exploring and finding hero points to help keep myself from getting stone faced but without the expansion and mounts to make it much quicker and easier, it just seems to take quite a while to get anywhere. Maybe I'm used to other games in which i can get to max level or close within a few days to a week. Maybe I should try slowing down and care more about what's going on in the game world. Your video was fine, it's just a personal opinion that I wish there was more to do at lower levels. Gear is a big part of mmos for me and it seems i only get gear when i level instead of farming mobs and bosses like I'm used to.

    This video is a bit out dated. DO NOT DO DUNGEONS. And "personal story" can be done at any time and you can wait to do it. There are certain places you can "revisit" periodically to do a special event or something to get "better gear" as you level. Once you have a level 80 you can literally just do stuff on a map called SILVERWASTES and open the loot bags on your OTHER character you want to level every so often to "gear up".

      It's impossible to compete with 270-350ms ping (this is with NBN too).

    Imo, gw2crafts isn't a good site. It's FAR better just watching youtube videos that explains what mats you need, and how to do it step by step. Also, I don't think crafting in this game is good, but I do recommend getting one of the crafting professions to 500, to make bags to all your toons. 32 slot bags are very expensive, but for those who are going to play a lot, it's well worth it. Note that only armorsmits, tailors and leatherworkers can make these.
    You do need to level crafting if you're going for legendaries, but they are so insanely expensive it's not worth it, especially considering that stats are exactly the same as ascended, which are FAR easier to get. Which is the reason very few have them.
