Its not because he is on another intellectual plane than we mere mortals , but Milliband really is a high faluted waffler who talks a lot , but doesnt actually say anything

Andrew Neil is the best interviewer in English speaking politics. David Milliband advertised his brand of politics and showed why he and others like him are yesterdays men, fighting against the inevitability of political gravity.

There's actually very very little substance in what Miliband is saying. Lots of smooth slick phrases rolling off his tongue but I didn't hear a single material point that made me think "hmm he's on to something here".

    • @ronikessler5652

Agree. No substance. Nothing. I was hoping he would have many great ideas. His idea, give us time. No one has the answers. What a manifesto.

The Centre Left, the wider Left took a position in migration that was traditionally of the radical free market right.
It became a snobbish movement towards its voters, uncomfortable with them.
It stopped listening and started lecturing, often very bitterly.

    Observation:
If i were being "interviewed" (lol...that's rich; a stretch) by someone who then ignores me by looking down at their notes (for next question, we are to assume....) i'd do one or two things.
    1. I'd look at the camera/camera person instead of the ignoring/ignorant individual beside me when answering.
    &/or
    2. I'd look down at my notes when they're talking/asking their question(s) also, and keep it up until they "get the message" or not.

Introducing a higher minimum wage does nothing to narrow the wealth gap. Reason being if EVERYONE gets a wage rise all that happens is that business puts it's prices up, in other words you just get inflation. Think about it. If you sell something be it a service or a product, what do you do with that product or service if you think your market all of a sudden has more money to spend, simple you put your prices up in exactly the same way that when people have little money to spend they put prices down. So in reality you're never any better off. The better way to prosperity is to take away class privilege. In other words make it easier for people born into a working class background to move up into the middle class and the middle classes to move up to the upper classes. In other words make it easier for social mobility. Stop taxing lower classes. Make it easier to start up business. Maybe even introduce measures that stop businesses from raising prices for goods and services that are necessary utilities such as Gas and Electric, poll tax, NI contributions etc.

    • @JWS1968

@Bessie Hillum what has that comment go to do with anything I said.

    • @JWS1968
      @JWS1968 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Bessie Hillum Starting with the insults already, hmm your argument must already be on shaky ground😂 Skilled labor has nothing to do with minimum wage. People with something worth selling have always set their own price and they're able to do so because their product is less common but in high demand. Plumbers not too long ago were making small fortunes in the big cities. They're no longer able to make the money they used to because the shortage in that sector has been addressed somewhat. The majority however are not skilled and have a much lower social value. It is those people that a minimum wage is aimed at.

As said here multiple times. Miliband is completely out of touch and self deluded to the reasons of where we are in politics in the west, and full of wishful thinking. He's talking in absolutes almost constantly and shows the usual thinking of the majority of politicians today and a complete refusal to acknowledge that there is an undercurrent in the west that will not go away until it's acknowledged correctly by these people.

The most pointless debate ever. Want to know why the liberal center left is diminished. It's simple..... We vote EU exit and the center left calls us racist, stupid because we don't know what we voted for, we are not tolerant because we have to be described with words like micro_aggresive. People up north in the UK have been in the EU for ever and nothing has changed fundamentally in their lives. They are still poorer than the people in the south. And the center left is still following the same. Policies of overtaxing the population. All traditional values are now ridiculed and banished as nostalgic ambitions. At every point the center left claims they know better than their voters they are the masters of morality, decency and values and the center left is also pushing this ambition of a monocultural society disregarding what makes us different is what make us stronger..... Anyway I have had my rant and nothing has changed so I will keep voting against the left untill I have a voice that represents me at the table.

Pardon the glibness, but there's perhaps a factor that needs to be mentioned. Profitable companies generating taxable profits in the West can easily move to low-tax jurisdictions abroad, placing a higher tax burden on the middle class to make up for shortfalls in government revenue. Wealthy individuals finance evermore expensive political campaigns of the large center-left and right-wing parties in an atmosphere of anonymity. It's never been a better time to be a lucky, smart, capable and creative person from a position of privilege.
In my opinion, one reason that the center-left is dead because the old social democratic parties simply lack the tools to police this behavior globally, so much of what Milliband is saying about local government successes is window dressing and irrelevant in the face of a larger, global economic system. Politicians like him probably will never be able to relive the post-1945 glory days of tax-and-spend Bretton Woods rules-based politics at the nation-state level. World government (or at least serious international cooperation with teeth) would probably be the answer but that will probably never happen, few would want to live in such a system, probably with good reason, so we are left in a situation where competitive forces and individualism dictate behavior, i.e. neoliberalism, and make up the order of the day. Whether that's a good or bad thing is for you as an individual player in this order to decide.
