Excellent video as always, it's nice to be reminded that despite the current doom and gloom good things are still happening on the railways. Looking forward to the next part!
The relocation of Morley Station allows the linespeed on the curve at the old site to be increased, and it gets rid of signaling restrictions related to how close the platforms were to the tunnel as well. The eventual electrification of the Stalybridge - Huddersfield section will likely come last, and will require the relocation of Mossley Station for OLE clearances.
@@Rail_FocusElectrification allows for greater line speeds but most importantly acceleration rates will increase, contributing to an increase in capacity.
The old Morley station right at the end of the tunnel mouth in a gloomy cutting was not the best place to be on a dark, rainy afternoon. New station looks much nicer. Let's hope the proposed electrification east of Leeds onto Selby, and ultimately Hull, gets completed too.
I'd like to see them try and squeeze four tracks through Mossley! There's barely enough room there for two, unless they plan to bore a hugely expensive tunnel through the cliff behind the station there, which could seriously undermine the ground above. The only other alternative would be to reopen the old loop on the other side of the valley, but surely that too would be far too hugely costly as several viaducts have long been demolished and tunnels filled in etc.
I don't believe there are any plans to 4 track through Mossley. The plans for a new tunnel between Manchester and Mossley haven't been made public yet.
The only thing worse than having to stop in Manc Victoria is having to stop there and then having the diesel engines kick in and ruining the comfortable silence! 😅
An excellent and informative video. The enormous white elephant government vanity project that is HS2 tends to grab all the rail headlines so I had no idea that this useful and beneficial project was actually happening. I will be certainly be interested to see how they deal with the electrification in the Standedge Tunnel.
Informative video as always. I just wanted to check if there had been upgrades to the existing electrification from Manchester Piccadilly to near Stalybridge on the Glossop line. It was the first time I've seen the new infrastructure running from Guide Bridge to Stalybridge, but I am curious about any further work as I remember the hot summer of 2022 caused the Glossup line to switch to diesel because the legacy DC electrification - which isn't up to modern standard - to be unusable during the heat.
Thanks for the updates. I'd be curious to understand more about the routing / works through Standedge / Mossley as there's a few proposals but nothing confirmed yet from what I understand? The other bit I'd like to understand is the electrification between Stalybridge and Piccadilly. The line speed seems super slow, are there any plans to upgrade the speed there to take advantage of the electrification?
Plans for Mossley were recently announced, with station relocated approximately 300m from the existing station, but it seems it won't be completed for a number of years. Network Rail states that new signalling will mean trains will be able to travel quicker between Victoria and Stalybridge, but doesn't say how much faster. Electrification will also mean the Class 802s will be able to accelerate much more quickly.
@@Rail_FocusI do wonder how far local services have to be degraded, and thereby degrade express services, before that cost is swallowed? I only asked my original comment because you will have new-built stations/platforms with easily enough room and, in my opinion, enough motive to have such passing loops... but yet end up putting the platforms on the main line regardless!
Although it is focused on the core section between Manchester and Leeds it will benefit many TPE routes. Will be improved journey times and reliability
Any news on bradford and its new station I know them at the fruit market behind adolphus Street have mentioned network rail have been doing inspection they have also been doing so at the old Bolton junction by are yard at Hall lane
@Rail_Focus I believe it may be done under the East West improvement but the budget is supposed to be coming out of the hs2 cancellation budget which is basically the TRU
This is a great upgrade are they going to get more or new trains? With the rebuild of East-West rails, why on earth did they not electrify that from the rebuild and reopening.
Just working existing stock harder, relying on Class 185s to take over Nova 3 duties. Apparently Northern will be taking over the stopping service from May so will release a few 185s.
Not sure if there are any freight connections between Manchester and Ravensthorpe. Although a lot of freight does use the line. Biomass trans between Liverpool and Drax in particular
The government should do lot more on improving railways in the North of England that is really struggling. Forget Manchester, Liverpool, Merseyside, The Wirral, Tyne and Wear and of course West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and South Yorkshire. The whole part of the North of England needs better railways that counties have experienced before including Cumbria, County Durham, Northumberland, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire.
Both. The Transpennine railway is of national strategic importance and needs to be upgraded, but that shouldn't come at the cost of other parts of the country.
@@Rail_FocusTrue but this is not necessarily much of an improvement for the cost of electrification if comparing to modern diesel electric trains. Part of the problem has been using old diesel electric locomotive stock.
It'll be even worse - can you imagine how many delays will be caused by 'problems with the overhead lines'? It's bad enough on the east coast main line, let alone with the more extreme weather on the Pennine route! Not to mention the sheer ugliness of the gantries and lines. No doubt an old diesel will have to come to the rescue when the new electric trains are 'stuck'.....as there's no power!
That’s not true at all. It’s a well established fact that electric propulsion is way more reliable than diesel propulsion, even after factoring outages owing to freak weather events. This would still be the case even if they decided to procure conventional EMU rolling stock without bi-mode capability.
Still electrifying this route after 1000 years? Meanwhile, BHARAT, that was colonised India until 22 January 2024, is approaching 100% electrification, using its own money and manpower and without the loot of empire. Where did the $45 TRILLION extracted from India by the British Empire go? This is so embarrassing!

Thanks. It's good to see that the TRU is finally underway.
I've read about TRU but not seen any video coverage before. Thank you.
Hope it was informative 🙂

Interesting about Morley thanks.
I did mention the stations between Stalybridge and Huddersfield but noticed a mistake, so cut it out.

@@aro4491 As far as I can tell from what's been published, the Selby route electrification has been cancelled or indefinitely postponed
Great video mate. I'm in the Midlands so appreciate the updates you did there. Keep up the good work!

Glad to be working on this project 😊

The underground platforms are dire and could certainly use a lick of paint, and someone with an eye for aesthetics to do a little something with it!
It does make a difference, although if you sit in the driving carriages there are no engines underneath 😉
@@Rail_Focus On class 802s, aren't the driving coaches 1st class? I guess their positioning makes sense if so!
I'm thinking of Nova 1s (802/2), I forgot to mention!
I'm fairly sure the Class 802s only have engines under the middle 3 carriages

It is good to see they're getting on with it. I was surprised by the scale of the work at Ravensthorpe.
Great to see ..more knitting going up

You're right - HS2 and East West Rail have hijacked the headlines for upgrades.
I wonder why, on many lines along the country where stopper trains and expresses interact, passing loops aren't more common!
Cost is the big factor. Having to shoehorn extra tracks into Victoria infrastructure isn't cheap.

Huddersfield to Dewsbury is costing £4bn to 4 track, so the DfT/Treasury must have taken some convincing.
@@Rail_Focus Maybe we should start disguising these projects as motorways!! 😅
Absolutely fantastic video! Do you know how long it will take for all these upgrades to fully finish?
Thank you, glad you liked it ☺️. The working completion date seems to be 2030 for Huddersfield to Dewsbury 4 tracking and full electrification.

You'd have to ask the DfT/Treasury
Can we have Scunthorpe to man airport the airport please?
Have to ask the Government 🙃
We will ever see the stretch between Hull and Selby electrified?
We can hope, but there's no funding as yet
And again, why not underslung 3rd rail, like the DLR?
Because 25kv is more efficient and enables high permissible speed. Plus 3rd rail is now difficult to install thanks to conditions imposed by the ORR.
what does OLE stand for? Overhead Line Electrification?
