It's a double edged sword because if they don't take the medication, they could be suffering. With medication, they're not suffering, but they're not living either. Having a good day? It's going too good, the drop will be worse than usual, take a pill so at least I can survive. Go through life on autopilot because it hurts less than feeling everything.

Are you guys familiar with Ren's past issues with his medical condition? Not everybody does at first, but it's an important context to a lot of his music. "Hi Ren", "Sick Boi", "Chalk Outlines", "Seven Sins", "Wicked Ways", "The Hunger", "Genesis", etc., etc all make references to his experiences in different degrees from a decade of misdiagnosis and being medicated for conditions he didn't initially have that were created by or exacerbated by the Medical industry's mismanagement of his actual condition (Lymes Disease). He continues to receive treatments in Canada to try and reclaim some of what his untreated condition took from him over many years. For many, many years his body was in pain and he knew something was wrong, and he was gaslit over and over again by "professionals" telling him it was all in his head. ✌, ❤, & Ren 🙏

I feel that the serious nature of his physical illness being masked by mental health treatment is important to Ren's story. Its why he goes into such detail in Seven Sins
He would not have become chronically ill maybe if they had treated him as more than a depressed person being in bed 23hrs a day is serious
Depression is in need of correct help too. But anyone in severe pain is likely to be depressed especially if not believed and listened too.

Chinchilla’s line “Take this one wash it down and you’ll be fine. The feeling goes and you draw a chalk outline.” Hits the nail on the head. The antidepressants, actually most of the psychiatric medicines, help to dampen the depression but in doing so they dampen everything. My experience with most of them was exactly this. I was still depressed. It didn’t leave I just didn’t feel it anymore along with happiness, joy, excitement, and just plain sadness. I really did feel like a walking chalk outline. Emotionally dead inside and putting on a smile hoping no one else would notice. 😐

Some helpful hints are that Ren is big with symbolism. At the beginning of the video, he's walking through what may look like the basement of a psych hospital. Of course, the white garb they're both wearing is another symbol for a psych ward. The flashing bulb is another eery element. Ren never uses any extraneous words - nor backdrops. His attention to detail is immaculate.

It’s primarily about depression. While you could compare it to drug or alcohol use, “setraline and a sip of seratonin” is referring to a type of anti depressant

    • @amyaeschbach3581
      @amyaeschbach3581 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

As A person who struggled with depression and anxiety turn on my life I’ve been prescribed many different medication‘s for both, I understand the song perfectly. Does absolutely about depression and anxiety and what those medication‘s do to a person. They help lift those symptoms but at the same time it is widely known and through experience that they tamper down all emotions sometimes negative and positive and you almost become unfeeling, or almost like a dead person. Hence walking around in a chalk outline means you’re walking around technically still alive but you really feel dead on the inside or on the edge of that as with trying to breathe at the gallows. Chinchilla says sertraline and a sip of serotonin, not just sipping on serotonin! Sertraline is a common anti-depressant that can help but results in the feeling of dead emotions hence feeling dead inside. There is no hope in the song. Pushing that pain back down with a “ great big smile“ is almost sarcastic. Not allowing yourself to feel that smile once in a while as you may have thought, but since we can’t feel those emotions it’s putting that big smile on your face to hide the pain from other people so they think you’re OK. When it said it’s a beautiful day but take it just in case, as with my anxiety medication, you continue to take it because no matter how beautiful something might seem at the moment that anxiety or depression can hit hard at any moment and you have to be prepared. Being scared to be OK is referring to that fear and anxiety that gets heightened if you let yourself feel OK because you know that that low is coming at any second again. Thanks for reacting to this incredibly beautiful song and we can’t forget to shout out to their incredible voices and harmony! ❤🙏🏻

@@Mhantrax Could be multiple things, really. Could be as in, being alive but not living. Or walking around slowly killing yourself with medication. Or just feeling empty and emotionless. The reason i stopped treatment with antipsychotics and remain unmedicated, is that they made me feel like a zombie. I was alive and breathing but it felt like i barely existed. I would regularly just sit and stare into a wall or at an object, basically just running on idle mode. It was hell, felt like my personality, what made me.... me, was just fading away, being replaced by an autopilot.
Being unmedicated, i may struggle more with my mental health, as i'm not getting sedated on the daily but i feel like a person again, i feel like "me" now. Some days are quite difficult but it's better than being a drugged zombie without a care in the world. Sorry for the rant btw lol

What a thoughtful reaction and great how songs can be interpreted in many ways. From what I understand and heard through various interviews when Ren was misdiagnosed for years for his Lyme's disease the medical industry were giving him different pills which made him feel dead (sometimes psychotic) as if he wasn't real. Then sometimes he'd feel a bit better but as he says take it just in case because he has mentioned before he'd get a brief time of being a little better then going right back to being extremely unwell again which I guess leads to self doubt as you would obviously think as soon as you feel better you didn't trust it would last so take your medication just in case even though the medication would ultimately take the potential of a beautiful day and make you feel erased like after the body had been removed from a chalk outline that's all that remains 🎶🧡🔥👩‍🦰

You're both right. That's the beauty in Rens lyrics and exactly why they resonate with so many people. Because what they mean is to everyone themselves. It's up to everyones interpretations and feelings and there is no correct or incorrect interpretation, it is what it is, it feels what it feels, it reminds you of what it reminds you. All different experiences, all different stories but still so relatable to so many people. Sure, you're twins, but you're still seperate people. What someone interprates or feels at certain lyrics is valueable and beautiful. It's so awesome that Ren can "trigger" so different experiences and feelings with the same outcome - you're touched and feel emotional.
Besides that I have to ask (though I don't expect an answer, because obviously it's personal and none of my business): Did anything happen between you guys in the last 1-2 weeks? If so, you should talk about it - with each other obviously, not with us. Be honest with yourself and your brother. Share whats bothering you. Your relationship is the most valuable thing you got. Don't risk it because you don't know how to phrase something that is bothering you.

If you're interested in what he does, I can personally highly recommend his interview on the channel The Charismatic Voice where he talks in some detail about it, but not too technical to where laypeople (like myself) can understand what he's saying.

The 'chalk outline', to me, is when you take anti depressants, you totally level out your emotions.. never truly happy, never truly sad.. it kills who you were. The drugs that you're thinking they're taking to escape, I think are prescribed.. having a shit day? To me it's about how while experiencing depression, you're medicated (antidepressants) just to feel ok, just to be able to bury your pain with a smile. To add to that, sometimes we add a habit (like smoking) just to help deal with things.
Chinchillas first line was "Sertaline and a sip of serotonin" sertraline is an antidepressant.
So when you are medicated, your own personality is erased and you become an outline of a person. You're floating around because the meds have made you feel numb.
"Such a perfect day, take it just incase" .. some days you feel like you're ok but you cant stop taking the meds, you have to take them "just incase".
I know I've also been afraid to be happy because of the fear of it all going away. Instead of being able to enjoy the moment, you become fearful of depression taking over again.
That's my take. Love your reactions, guys. I'm sure we can claim you two as RENegades at this point 😄. Peace and love ✌️

You both are right to feel what ever you felt with this.
This one took me with my journey of depression and mental health.
It’s a perfect day but just take that tablet just incase. Just incase things turn shit.
Medication makes every one a walking chalk outline. You numb your feelings because the drs have told you that you need to take this. But what if you could be happy without it?
The fear of not taking them and feeling good. There’s always that fear that if you let yourself feel hope, you’re going to fall on that noose you’re balancing on anyway.
Sertraline and a sip of serotonin is about the drug Zoloft. That little hit of serotonin with each tablet but you eventually become numb. No point in crying to the dr because there’s a pill for everything. Gaslit by drs into taking meds for everything.
Either was you look at this, I can’t get through it without crying. Chinchilla is a perfect balance for Ren and vice versa.
I blast this and sing her part because this is my genre I live in. Fospel 😊
Great upload again. I’m glad you both felt different things and talked it through.

I'm the husband of someone with a chronic illness, and part of the treatment over the years was the medication mentioned in the song, as well as other stronger things. For a significant amount of time the stuff she was being prescribed put her out of it mentally and emotionally--but she needed it just to get through the day most of the time. From this perspective, I see the song as that mournful lament of living in that way: taking the necessary medications you need to live can also remove you from living life like normal. A chalk outline defines something real, but then the body must be removed from that scene and all that is left is the chalk outline. So it defines and erases at the same time. My bride had days where she was "better" and yet, she knew she still needed to take the required meds so they would continue built up in her system for when she wasn't doing so great. It's that love/hate relationship with a chronic illness--you are a victim of the cure inasmuch as you are victim of the disease.

Sertraline is better known as Zoloft, an SSRI commonly used as an antidepressant. This song is about how depression is often treated from a pharmaceutical standpoint, and how it can make people feel. SSRIs can make people feel "dead inside".
In short, life has its ups and downs. When you're depressed you feel like you're drowning or suffocating. The pills help, but the effect is temporary in many cases. Every day taking the pills can be hard, and give you that "dead inside" feeling, but the fear of the alternative; being miserable or even suicidal; may be what forces you to take the antidepressant (I'm scared of being OK, 'cause all things change)...

You both had beautiful interpretations of the song. This is what I love the most about Ren, he's never going to tell you what any of his work means to him. Instead of defining it, he wants everyone to see, and take from it, what they need. That being said, my thoughts on this one align more with Trix's. I've been through a lot in my life. Any time things are going well, I find it suspicious. Such a perfect day, it's a beautiful shame because I'm not enjoying it. I'm waiting for that other shoe to drop. I'm waiting for something to go wrong because in my experience it usually does and if I'm on guard and expecting it then it's gonna hurt less when it happens. I know that's no way to live and I'm working on it because it really can make me feel like a shell of a person sometimes.

I think you both right. When you are in pain, you are scared to be ok because your comfort zone now is to be in pain and for the same reason you are scared to be okay because things can turn back into the pain and the feeling is not to step out of that comfort zone.. and that's itself the shame during a beautiful day!!

The way I see certain lyrics: A new habit is taking the psych meds. Erasing yourself in a chalk outline is because your walking around partially numbed from those meds. It's such a beautiful day, such a beautiful shame is because of the numbing down it's a shame you can't enjoy that beautiful day as much, but if you skip the meds enough to enjoy those days you will fall further down into your depression So you need to take them just incase.

It's about mental health. How they tell you to take a pill and your be ok. Burying yrself with a great big smile is the face you put on when yr dead inside but the meds put on that fake smile. There's a pill for everything that's wrong with you. Not about a person on drugs.

I think he meant by taking one just incase is that he's trying to do without those pills but he knows something is going to happen to where he is feeling so horrible again that he wished he took the pill.
Hence take it just in case because all things change.
The chalk outline seems to be referencing what a person feels like when they take certain medication for depression and/or anxiety. They feel like they are floating in a chalk outline almost ready to escape this reality.

I think this is the beauty of true art...which is what Ren makes...every person has their own ideas and opinions based on your experience, this just makes his music so universal. You don't have to have gone through exactly what he did to relate to his music. I love that you had different opinions...ahh...the beauty of real music! Thank you for sharing!

  • @sigally

This song in particular is very open to interpretation. It relates to most people in one way or another. What it means to Ren isn't as important as what it means to each one of us. He has said this before. That's why Ren rarely talks about the meaning in his lyrics. One other thing. In almost every song of Ren's there is a juxtaposition within the lyrics, instrumentals or both. The Ying Yang, light dark, dispair and hope.

As someone who has had mental breakdowns and suffers with anxiety and depression, the line about being scared to feel ok because everything changes rings true, because you can be crippled with depression and then be in a period of feeling ok but your scared to enjoy it and be in that moment because at the drop of a hat it could change and your suffering again. Also when you have chronic pain or symptoms of certain conditions, you may physically be ok one day and then in excruciating pain again the next - Ren experiences both of those - physical and emotional pain. When he’s fine he creates but he has had periods of time when he has been in so much physical pain that he couldn’t even stand in the shower or leave his bed! Also, when you live with chronic pain that leads to depression and anxiety and you fear being able to even leave the house because of your symptoms. It is a very deeply sad but beautiful song expressing where many people are in the lives for whatever reason. It could also describe how an addict feels, that too fits, that’s what makes REN’s music so good, because people relate.

this song relates heavily to someone with depression, the pills being antidepressants or other types of mood stabilizers. as someone who used to be on zoloft, it made me less depressed, sure. but it took away all the other feelings too. I stopped taking it because I couldn't stand feeling like an emotionless robot. I couldn't feel happy or sad or angry or any other emotion you can think of... I was just empty, like a chalk outline.

  • @cyclops60

Nice one guys, it was really interesting seeing the 'twinsense' a bit out of synch! Loved your discussion. I love the build up to this one, the atmospheric scene setting reminds me how Pink Floyd often draw you into their songs but musically in their case.
My take is that it's about dealing with depression with medication, how empty it can make you feel and how 'feeling ok' is only temporary. I don't feel there's much hope or optimism expressed, sadly. The smile is just for show, standing on tip toes in the noose is how close to the edge you feel. I think (possibly???) the chalk outline gets drawn when you take your meds, you walk around in it while the meds are working, not really feeling alive, then they wear off and the chalk outline gets erased so you start over again with the meds, maybe different ones?
They are so good together it's really special, I couldn't have imagined such chemistry. You have to check out 'How to be me' live, I think it's even better than this! Cheers

They're both saying the same words, but I think each character is conveying something totally different. Do with that what you will.

Ren writes about himself and his struggles with his illnesses, depression, Lymes disease and his life in general. However he also writes in such a way that others can relate. Seretonin is a drug that naturally occurs in the brain and I believe certain prescribed medications used for anxiety and depression use that process in the brain to calm the negative feelings in the patient.

His lyrics usually refer to his own life. And "sertraline" is an anti-depressant and serotonin is a neurotransmitter. This song is about depression, how it feels and the struggle to get out of it. "Little by little…I push it back down with a new habit" doesn’t refer to drugs as a habit can be anything that distracts oneself, shopping, sex, the internet.

I related to this song so much it hurt.
The new habit can be drugs or tv shows, escapism, something that momentarily makes you forget your pain or your existence, so you can bury yourself, the inner you with a great big smile, fake smile. Sertraline is a antidepressant, sip or serotonin, little pit of happiness. Pill for everything, momentarily fix for everything, bandaid, or med industry offering drugs for everything rather than really helping. Many antidepressants make you feel hollow, numb, dead.
Take it just incase, even if it's a good day you take the med just incase it goes to shit. You are scared to enjoy the good because it can always come back down.
We draw the chalk outlines with these habits and taking these meds, we erase ourselves, our personalities in these chalk outlines.
I also think they both might be referencing to their own experience with mental struggle. Ren saying he is still in the bed he crawled in, he has told how his illness made him so tired and pained that he had to literally crawl to bed. Maybe chinchilla has more experience with the cycle of antidepressants that make you feel nothing, numb.

I really loved the realness of your reaction(s) and your interactions. Some reactors would put on a show and make it seem like everything is “peachy” all the time and edit out any awkwardness or “friction”. Just because you’re twins it doesn’t mean you’re not also just the average siblings that butt heads sometimes… and sometimes quite often.
So it was actually rather refreshing to see the “love my bro”, happy twin-sense connection kind of stuff, along with the rolling of the eyes, the “I’m about to slap you silly” kind of looks and the “what you talking about Willis”? smirks.
Yeah, that’s real life there - and it shows that you boys are pretty authentic, with the reactions and probably in real life as well.
Once again, I really enjoyed your reaction(s) and appreciated both of your perspectives. I think 10 different people could take away 10 different meanings from art, such as this song/vid… and that’s a beautiful thing.
Keep up the fantastic work and when you get a chance, check out REN’s newest release from today - Nas’ ‘Halftime’ retake (knowing you guys are such huge fans of Nas).
