      There are some other versions of the pilot metropolitan, and they are a rollerball pen and a mechanical pencil

      What's your favorite pen you have?

    • @gertahnstrom784

      @Fire Smollett I don't quite agree that modern pens can't keep up with fast paced writing. On the other hand I don't have much experience with vintage pens. But all my fountain pens, from a 60's Sheaffer, Pilot MR, Lamy Vista and the most expensive one I got, a Lamy 2000, will happily put down ink all day as fast as I can move the nib across the page, until the ink runs out. :)
      My thought on penmanship is that a fountain pen feels lighter to write with than a ball point, making people focus some at their writing to start with, often with the outcome of them changing a few details of their writing, improving their penmanship.

    • @gertahnstrom784
      @gertahnstrom784 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Fire Smollett "feels lighter to write with" not regarding the weight of the pen. My standard ballpoint is a Ballograf Epoca which is very common in Sweden, and they want a bit of pressure to write with. Never really liked them. I'd prefer a pencil any day over that, but lead isn't as legible and durable for notes that are used.

    Fountain pens are not meant to be "dogged" out like a ballpoint. I carry mine in my purse, and do not
    have any problems. If you drop your FP you will definitely experience ink leaking out into the
    pen cap. You are right that a $15 pen is the tip of the iceberg (LOL). I am an avid FP lady, and always
    enjoy writing with one or more of my pens.

    I'm a fountain pen collector. Have (4) Pilot Metropolitan Retro Pops in my collection of 250 pens. Absolutely
    love writing with fountain pens. My handwriting is larger, and I tend to prefer a Medium & Broad nib. I also like
    a fine which writes like a fine/medium. Have quite a few stub nibs in my collection. The Pilot Metropolitan
    comes in red/orange/green/light blue/purple/gray. FPs should not be mishandled as one would do a ballpoint.
    The Pilot Metropolitan Animal print comes in: Silver python/white tiger/black crocodile/plum leopard/gold lizard.
    Pilots comes in: Fine nib, medium nib and 1.1 stub nibs. A nice fountain for the money and one I would recommend
    for someone who is looking to purchase their very first pen. As you begin to use a fountain pen you will discover
    what you like and dislike, which will aid in you making future fountain pen purchases. There is a community of
    fountain pen user around the world: Fountain Pen Network. You will learn everything you need to know about
    fountain pens, paper, calligraphy, vintage pens, etc. Check out the website.

      I've somehow managed to make my handwriting as rushed and terrible as ever even with this pen :P

  • @JamesWilliams
    @JamesWilliams 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Great video but have a couple points. I carry pens to and from work in a backpack every day. They just happen to be in a pensleeve or pencil pouch. Preferably nib up so that the movement doesn't make it burp.
    A benefit of FPs is that if you do write a lot, it takes less pressure so it's gentler on people with RSI problems...especially if you have a death grip.
    I've been into the hobby for about 4 years now. I do have a few pens that are over $20 but most of my daily workhorse pens are under $5. Price != quality in the FP world. Refilling from a bottle of ink does get messy, less messy with practice but you still have inky fingers from time to time. Sticking with cartridges is totally fine.

    • @SuperReview
      @SuperReview  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which $5 pens do you recommend?

    • @JamesWilliams
      @JamesWilliams 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SuperReview The Platinum Preppy is a "disposable" pen that goes for like $4 but you can buy refill ink cartridges for it. It is very reliable. It is a demonstrator/clear pen so if you care about looks it might not be your jam. You can pick it up after a month or more and it will write the first time (ink evaporating/drying in a concern in most FPs)
      The Jinhao 51A is another of my faves. It comes in a variety of finishes. It's my "professional" pen. It's $5 on eBay generally, $2 or so if you order on Aliexpress.
      The Jinhao 992 has performed for me as well. It's generally in the $2 range.
      Both Jinhaos come with a converter to refill from ink bottles. Many of the FP retailers like Goulet Pens, Birmingham Pens, and Anderson Pens sell ink samples to try an ink before committing to a bottle, 2m to 5ml of ink for $1-4. To fill a pen once, it's generally between 0.5mL and 1mL.
      Bottles of ink can be all over the place based on ink qualities, company, etc. One bottle of ink I have was $20. However it's a 50mL beatifully designed glass bottle, so it can fill 100 pens or I can give some away/trade etc. If you have a FP person nearby, 9/10 they will be cool to give you some sample vials of what they have.

    In general a FP can be tossed in a bag if you aren’t swinging it around much and if you have a pen pocket as many do then there is no problem. I carry mine around all the time and while occasionally it will get bumped and leak some ink it is minimal enough not to be a problem. Planning on putting together a note taking kit and getting one or two more of different sizes and adding different inks to each (I am an artist that likes weight and color variations in notes). I will also carry a G2 ballpoint for lending (my favorite ballpoint but still not as good as a FP lol) but my goal is to switch entirely to FPs for personal use. I am a person who really enjoys physically writing though, for those less comfortable I can understand how it would be less engaging.

  • @justsomesaltyboi8716
    @justsomesaltyboi8716 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    the thing that is amazing with fountain pens is the choices of inks you can get, and the personalizations you can get with it. if you got a demonstrator pen made completely out of acrylic or resin, you can find yourself changing the colors of the pen based on the colors of the ink you have in the reservoir. some of it will stain sure, but just hit it up with some bleach and the ink stains will go away and bing bong presto, you are good to use lots of other inks to pop in the reservoir and change that color once more! take a look at the majohn (moonman) pens to see what i mean by demonstrator pens and see what i mean. i got my demonstrator coming in tomorrow and its a small fat beefy boi with a huge reservoir and its in a medium nib because of it's girthiness. it would be awkward using it in an extra fine when it really could glide across the paper like it's nobody's business. would i rebuy another fountain pen and try to get it in extra fine? sure, i would totally be down to find one that fits the aesthetic and would be great for note taking, doodling, and confidence training with writing stuff down (yes that is a thing).

    Best pen ever. Get yourself a pot of ink and it’s the only pen you’ll need. Something goes wrong? No biggie, buy another. I love when things are a good price and work a treat. You don’t feel nervous using it and you can use it for a long time and use it well. I use this to draw, too, and I love the nib. It’s medium but it can write very fine.

This is also true of Sailor and Platinum, other major Japanese brands. My suggestion would be to write with this pen for several months so you get an idea of what you like and don't like before you try another. i've been an avid collector for 4 years now, so please let me know of you have any questions. cheers

      What are the sorts of attributes that differentiate pens, and that pen enthusiasts seek out? I have a bunch of other hobbies that I've learned, fountain pens is pretty unknown to me.

    • @darensweeney5925
      @darensweeney5925 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SuperReview The primary attributes are how the nib writes f(ine? medium? broad?), and then the size, weight, and shape. Italian pens tend to be huge, while other companies offer pocket pens that are cute and easy to carry. Also, do you like a stiff nib (no, that's not obscene....;)), or do you like a nib with a bit of flex to give your writing a bit of style. Of course, some people like to collect pens that were made from the 1910s through the 1950s. many are absolute works of art.
      If you want some entertaining intros to pens, check out the channels gouletpens (a store in VA), sbrebrown (a pen enthusiast and neuro-psychologist), and the store jetpens.com
      Now, my question for you. I have very narrow ear canals, and most IEMS hurt for me. Do you know of any that are made for really small ears that still sound good? Comply tips are the only thing that make them work for me at all. Thanks

    • @SuperReview
      @SuperReview  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darensweeney5925 Hm, I will have to guess a bit, because I'm not actually sure what strategy is best for small ear canals: Better to prioritize earbuds with small-diameter stems, or better to go for shallow-fit? The smallest-diameter ones I have are Final E2000, which is a nice smooth-sounding headphone with good bass and not a lot of treble. For shallow fit, I have Whizzer Kylin, and they manage to stay quite secure. The headphones I use with Comply tips are Tin Hifi T2 Pro. When I use the Comply tips, I don't roll them up and stuff them in my ears -- I leave it expanded when I push it into my ear, so it doesn't fit very deep at all. But stays secure.
      So a few options there, depending on which fit sounds like it'd be best for your ears.

    • @sillypinkmate
      @sillypinkmate 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SuperReview Stub nib is a flat-end tipped nib that, in simple, makes line variations just by writing with it. This pilot metropolitan you have has a rounded tip nib (the nib points forward with a small ball/tip at the end), a stub nib looks as if the nib got cut horizontally. When you google up stub nib you'll see the different line widths in just an alphabet, as if you're making a calligraphy style handwriting. It'll need sometimes to practice, but if you're willing to spend time it would be great.

    I got into FPs after watching some videos about the difference between the types of pens.
    I never actually understood why would people wanna use fountain pen when I was a kid. The first time I saw a fp in my life was a friend of mine using it. It was a mess since he liked to spill ink everywhere. That was also the last time I ever saw anyone using fountain pen in front of my eyes.
    As someone who writes alot, like really alot I prefer to use a pen that not gonna tire me pretty quick or bother me when using it.
    So I gave it a go, bought a Pilot Kakuno with fine nib. It felt normal and familiar since I had been using dip pens for calligraphy. The smoothness is what amazed me when I used it. Ever since then, I have been using fountain for most of my writing, only ballpoint or else when my fp isn't with me.
    I barely get tired using it and to be honest, the first time I got my Kakuno I ended up using the whole ink cartridge given just less than 30 hours after getting them in my hand. I can say that I was kind of obsessed with it lol.
    I also bought some other pilot fps later, inks and lots of paper because they can't really write on low quality paper...

    • @SuperReview

      Mm, I think you just (1) remove the cap, (2) unscrew the top and bottom halves of the pen, (3) push the ink cartridge into the top half, (4) screw the halves back together.

    Fountain pens work great in backpacks and at school. Many countries still make fountain pens mandatory in school, and it's a good thing.
    I know technology has pushed many away from cursive, and it's a shame. Cursive uses your brain very differently than does a keyboard. We don't write letters and words and numbers, we draw them. Drawing must use the creative center of the brain, and it makes a big difference.
    This is another reason that cursive and touch screens are becoming more and more popular. Keyboards are fast, easy, convenient, and brain deadening for anything requiring creativity.
    There's no excuse for poor handwriting, even in 2020. It's an easy thing to correct, and one that will make your life much better.
    You would also be amazed by how many foreign business people I've know who hate working with Americans because cursive is become a dying art. They think such people are little children in their thinking, and either laugh at them behind their backs, or speak them with pity.

    When you are into Fountain Pens, you will probably be dragged into inks. I am waiting for Pilot Nakimi, Diamine, Noodler's, J. Herbin... Reviews as well. :))))). Pilot is with Japanese style so the Fine nib is equivalent with Extra Fine with other western brands. So I think Pilot Medium nib is better for your hand writing.
    And yes, people who are into headphones generally into Fountain Pens as well.

    You assume that you're talking to people who, such as you, have never used a fountain pen. Do you realize how many times you say you know very little about them? You should note that the Metropolitan will only use Pilot's proprietary cartridges. A very good reason to use the included converter and to just go ahead, bight the bullet, and buy a bottle of ink. You don't realize it, but you are reviewing what is the best fountain pen in its price range.

    FPs are like cigars - before you know about it, it may seem uninteresting or even strange or like a burden. But once you give it a chance, then you realize it’s legit! In the USA nowadays, men are ‘bad’, and there are fewer and fewer hobbies for men. Cigars and fountain pens are great for women, too! But it’s a whole world of fun and refinement and gentlemanly pleasure.
    You should smoke a good cigar while writing a headphone review using a fountain pen! You’ll be in heaven!
