If you talk about buying on Etsy, then yes it is costly, because most of the items are handmade every time by one or few people, and not like big companies which have plenty of employees to make the products in bulk.
If you mean about selling on etsy, then it is one of the nominal rate website to sell. Wherever we sell, we obviously should pay some commission for their part in making our business
