    Here's the challenge...
    I'm listening to this with my teenage kids (I was able to get them interested because they loved the movie remake with the Rock) We are talking about it while running errands and at dinner. We are going to try and make something that the kids pick out from all the tools/ supplies/ gadgets they make in the story. My daughter wants to make bricks or pottery, my son, the bow and arrows. I challenge others to try the same experiment with your family. It's proven fantastic family time. 😁

      Those are memories that are will last a lifetime for your children. I read that Verne wanted to write these books to inspire youth of era to study nature and the sciences apparently they are still doing their job.

      I suggest a cast iron pan. used for camping. etc etc. They can keep it forever and "smell what the rock is cookin"!"

    Great book, I love it, very hilarious. Great voice from the reader. Thank you!
    When I was twelve these books were amazing adventures, but now that I have done a PhD in engineering, done some travel, and had a midlife crisis I can have a good laugh at every paragraph.

    Thanks for posting. Jules Verne's science fiction was terrific, unique, and important. An important component of the development of the modern world through exploration and application of scientific knowledge in an interesting way by incorporating these into intriguing stories with different characters and their challenges.

    Great job and your efforts are much appreciated. The heart that you have for doing what you do is all that matters, so even though the human condition exists among those that need to comment unappeciatively, they are everywhere and are irrelevant.
    Dont take it to heart as they cannot be see values that truly matter. Don't change anything! Keep it up my friend!

    Jules Verne seems to have believed engineers could do anything.

    • @obiwanfisher537
      @obiwanfisher537 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My thinking. In his mind, engineers are gods lol They know geology, all sorts of plants, they can buid everything and anything even from literally scratch, have a vast knowledge about everything, can navigate better than a sailor and so on. Haha
      This book seems to be Jules Verne just writing out stuff as he studies various topics like history (civil war), flora and fauna, astrology and so on and instead of making notes, he writes a book about it.

    Great exercise for english non-speakers, I am only puzzled why they changed the name of Cyrus Smith to Harding. It's just a small detail perhaps, but the name Cyrus Smith was always iconic to me.

    • @Waterfowler35
      @Waterfowler35 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wondered the same thing. I also noticed a few differences when following with my copy of the book. My guess is the wording has changed over the years from one edition to another.

    • @mjbachman3027
      @mjbachman3027 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In the original version of the book, written in French, the engineer.is Captain Cyprus Smith, not Harding. The first English language translation, by Anges Kingston in 1875, renamed Cyrus Smith as Cyrus Harding. The recent, excellent 2002 book edition with translation by Jordan Stump, restores the original Cyrus Smith name as Verne had written.

    The story was great but the math for the grain of corn was very wrong. Corn comes in kernels and one alone produces 500 to 1800 kernels.
    Wheat grain produce 8 or more heads with 40 grains per head.

      Haha. I haven't got to that part yet. But as I have had the fortune a very good and wide education in natural sciences, I can assure you almost everything in this book is very, very wrong 😁
