  • What did I know when I started stacking my firewood for drying? Not very much as it turns out.
On a recent holiday break I found a book called Norwegian Wood (an homage to the Beatles song no doubt)

The book is excellent if you’re a beginner like me - hey I never said I was an expert, like the one armed alligator wrangler, I learn as I go along.
I now stack my wood off the ground, in rows which are not too wide, and come autumn, put some plastic on the top to keep the rain off. If the sides get they’ll dry pretty quickly, but if rain gets into the middle in a very wet cold winter, it could take months to dry out. Meanwhile the beetles and woodlice move in…..
I also stack the unsplit wood on its bark with a nice big gap around for the same reason. Keep it as open and dry as possible.
I’m also going to clear the brush, brambles and fallen tree around the woodpile to improve airflow.
By my judgements this large wood pile should be ready next winter…….
