The Treaty of Waitangi was actually signed between the British Crown and Māori tribes. It was created to protect Māori from the illegal land grabbing , and various unruly criminal activity that was being enacted by foreigners towards Māori in the early 19th century. The protest here is because a newly elected right wing minority party is simply playing to its base. Its followers would have you believe that Māori have some privileged position in NZ despite all evidence being contrary . Māori score worse on every measure of health, income per household, incarceration. unemployment etc There has been significant improvements in the Māori lot over the last 20 years but that has only come from Māori asserting their constitutional rights under the treaty and taking the treaty partner the Crown to Court. There is a good reason why the conservative National Government doesn't back this bill as well.
Wouldn't having these principles, particularly the 3rd one help with these poor conditions socially for Maori people. I believe part of the Bill states that all New Zealanders will be equal. This can have a trickle down effect in which judicial issues can be more fair. With no judgement based on our ancestors, but the relevant evidence base on per case. I like this bill for a few reasons 1. It shows the subtle racism in New Zealand, it's always been here, we just ignore it 2. It's a pragmatic approach to saying "We are New Zealand, let's deal with our issues and then move on to more pressing issues.
The treaty of Waitangi is why Maori are integrated into New Zealand Society, are not poor, are not outcasts, are not on ever shrinking reservations ...
@@davidioanhedges the treaty of Waitangi is what allowed Europeans to integrate into an existing Maori society. Maori are the worst statistically, socioeconomically, have been horrifically outcast and were moved from thriving pā reservations from having their land confiscated from them…

The problem here is at a very basic level, you cant just alter treaties without the agreement of all parties involved. Now correct me if I am wrong but no Maori Chiefs whatsoever, signed onto this bill agreed to this bill or even were informed of it, so representative Maipi-Clarke wasn't protesting, she was asked what her people think, and her response was that it would be a declaration of war as well as a violation of international treaties laws, rules, and regulations. Like you cant just revoke a treaty or make alterations to it without the other parties signing, like imagine if Japan revoked its surrender treaty to the United States and said that Korea was part of Japan, that would be an act of war, imagine if Germany revoked the treaties with Poland giving them most of eastern Prussia that they signed at the end of World War 1 and 2, there would be war. The proper was to make amendments to treaties is to have a diplomatic meeting with the parties involved and negotiate said changes, clearly a sizable portion of people in the New Zealand parliament lack basic civic education. The proper way to enact the bill these people want to enact is to have a diplomatic meeting with the Maori Chiefs and negotiate amends to the treaty or revoke it. This is not a radical anti democracy thing but rather this is basic diplomatic procedure.
"Now correct me if I am wrong" You're wrong. They aren't amending the treaty or changing it. What they are doing is not allowing it to be used as a crutch or leverage on things that are not actually in the treaty. For example. The government repealed a smoking ban and the Maori said that violated the treaty because smoking hurts them. That's the kind of shit this bill is putting an end to.
The Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand - He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni, is a document signed by a number of Māori chiefs in 1835 that proclaimed the sovereign independence of New Zealand 5 years prior to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Māori never ceded sovereignty but negotiated tino rangatira (self governance) and granted the British permission to govern their people. Māori have always upheld their end of te tiriti but unsurprisingly the British never did. This unconstitutional bill threatens the very existence of Aotearoa NZ.

A contract, is a contract, is a contract. In the case of a contract written in 2 languages, the copy written in the indigenous language takes precedence in cases of ambiguity or inconsistency. This bill will get tossed out, it has no legs and Seymour has no brains.
That headline’s incorrect in at least two major ways. It was TENS of thousands and possibly our largest protest march ever, there have been events throughout the country, and it’s not simply “Māori protests”. Not cool.
It was between Maori and the British Crown …. Not colonisers!, that also means the British Crown of today, and interestingly we have heard nothing from King Charles that he would support such a racist bill! Terrible reporting BBC of what is also your own history considering you are a British Channel. Biggest turnout for a protest New Zealand has ever had in its history took place yesterday of Maori and non Maori. Improve your reporting, that was below BBC standards.
This isn't an opinion please keep in mind... this isn't "the people protesting think xyz". There have been reports from the Waitangi Tribunal and the Ministry of Justice that conclude this bill is unnecessary and will damage Māori-Crown relations. Also it was 55,000 people in the hīkoi to parliament.
It was truly special to see Tangata Whenua (the People of this Land) and Tangata Tiriti (Non-Māori or people of the Treaty) coming together to protest the bill here in Te Whānganui-a-Tara (Wellington) in a peaceful and deeply Māori way. It shows that when the need arises, our people can mobilise with unity and strength. To give those who weren't there or who aren't from Aotearoa a sense of what the atmosphere of the hīkoi was like-imagine a typical Sunday barbecue, but with 50,000+ family members turning up to share a meal. In our culture, everyone gets a plate, everyone gets a seat, and especially our mokopuna (grandchildren) are given priority! PROUD TO BE MĀORI, AKE AKE AKE (FOREVER AND EVER)

Would be funny to get NZ on one of those "Institutionally Racist" NGO/UN lists - as they legally don't treat all citizens equally.
Boy, the ignorance and hate here is astounding. Let’s not forget that anyone who arrived in NZ at the time of English colonization or after has gained wealth at the expense of Maori. Their land was stolen by the colonial governments and sold to new settlers. At one point in our history, Māori were expected to die out. The fact that they didn’t, that their population grew, and that they became educated in the “new system” and now want their rights back has created a problem for those with their heads in the sand. Equal rights for all New Zealanders, you say. First, let’s level up the playing field. Funk off to all you racist cuts out there.
Personnaly, I'm glad this Bill has come out. Is has finally revealed what we have all been denying. We are subtly racist. At least now it's out in the open. So now we can figure this out.
@@Tehui1974 Look what Europeans gave the world. Its hardly the same thing. How many people did the British invade who were not themselves raiders, murderers and slavers? Seems like they did the right thing. No nation on earth has done more than the British to end slavery. All rights and equality come from Europeans.
Its not needed, we can still speak our own language. We are not under occupation. It just so happens that we a vocal minority like you who have to cry about everything, no matter how irrational it is.
Seymour wants an equal and fair society that gives everyone the same rights. I agree with the sentiment of this statement but the intention behind his bill and his actions unfortunately do not align with this. Many people misunderstand the protesters as yelling and screaming that they are "special" and deserve more rights. If you do not understand what is so wrong about the bill then please answer these two questions honestly: Has the treatment of Māori and non-māori been fair over the last 184 years since the treaty was signed? Does your version of an ideal NZ society allow for māori values and customs to be given equal importance to western values and customs? My first question (an easy one to answer) explains the distrust that has been sown among the indigenous people of this country. They signed a document to protect their sovereignty over their land and the contract was thoroughly broken time and time again by both force and with legislation in order to wipe out the rights and livelihood of an entire culture. Now that we are a civilised, progressive society and these problems are being addressed, people feel that this amounts to "special treatment" and "handouts". Now I know that my statement is very generalising and the actual situation is nuanced and lengthy. However if your argument is that Māori weren't here first or the treaty is null and void anyway then you are sadly the victim of historical mistruths that have been spread throughout society (even in our own education system) deliberately to undermine the claims that Māori have made under the treaty. This is all well documented, researched and undisputed by all political parties (at least out in the open). For example, the Moriori story is a brutal and tragic story that does indeed describe a near genocide in the Chatham islands. However it has been long manipulated into a story that the Moriori resided in NZ first and that Māori colonised the area when they arrived. This is disingenuous at best and at worst is an offensive misrepresentation of both cultures with the sole purpose of undermining Māori standing in their own country. The research is clear and unopposed on this subject but it sure serves racists well to keep bringing it up. If you answered my second question with fear about "Māori stuff" that should stay on the marae but not allowed in civilised society, then unfortunately you don't really want equal rights. You just want a peaceful western/British/anglicised society where everyone drinks tea (or coffee) and you only have to deal with the haka at the start of rugby games. A fair and equal society in my view rewards both western and Māori values in equal measure. While western society values wealth and individuality, a Māori worldview values manākitanga and kaitiakitanga as more important. We only need to look to America to be reminded of what happens to a society that puts wealth and individual rights above the good of society. Only rich corporations have any power to shape society which big surprise makes for bigger, richer, more powerful corporations and a political system that is easily corruptible. (Tell me I'm wrong!) A united NZ would put more value in the taking care of our people, our organisations and our environment. English and Māori would be taught side by side from kindergarten and Tikanga be taken seriously by all organisations in the country. All introduced religions and cultures are to be embraced and celebrated and all guests in our country to be treated with the respect that they deserve (of course disrespectful visitors may "deserve" different treatment from others). This is the equality that we are driving towards and if it doesn't sound like your idea of a fair and equal society then maybe you are in denial about the two cultures that created our founding documents.
The Treaty of Waitangi its a Peace Treaty between most of the Chiefs of the Maori tribes of 1840 and the Monarch of the English Empire at the time Queen Victoria. It is a historical document that it's part of the history of both NZ and the English Empire.
The treaty principles bill is about equality for all not just maori culture. Maori proverb: He taonga rongonui te aroha ki te tangata Goodwill towards others is a precious treasure
The treaty as it stands gives preference to Maori while the new legislation proposes to make these rights universal to all New Zealanders. In plain English, the existing legislation is racist and the new one is not.
@Taonga2u The Maori are themselves colonisers who arrived in New Zealand the 13th century and murdered and cannibalised the originals tribes. And FYI, I live in my home country of England.
A Māori owned radio station boss said they had reporters on the ground at the hikoi's and those they interviewed didn't really understand the bill or didn't even read it 😂
@@curiositycloset2359 It's rich for Europeans in NZ to want equality now, when from 1840 - 1970 Europeans were privileged at the expense of Māori. Give all the stolen land back, and then we'll talk about equality.
The short history lesson here is that the Treaty of Waitangi was a document signed in 1840 by Māori leaders and the British Crown. The Treaty was written in two languages (English and Māori) with two very different meanings. After 1840, Britain colonised the Māori population (just like they did with Ireland, India, Australia) and privileged the European settlers at the expense of Māori. Māori are now over represented in all the negative socio-economic stats in NZ. In 2024, we now have a far right political party in the NZ government, who wants to implement legislation that drastically reinterprets the Treaty in a way that ignores what the Māori version of the Treaty states. Can you not see the problem with this?

Thank you for sharing my people’s plight on your platform. 180 years ago my ancestors signed a document called The Treaty of Waitangi (pronounced why-Tung-ee)with the British crown and it was written in Māori but has also been ‘interpreted’ into an English version. 180 years later a party within the New Zealand government has put forward a bill that will alter the way the Treaty is interpreted and drastically change the founding document of our nation. My people and people from many other communities that make up our country, marched to Parliament today in a show of strength and solidarity to show our government that we will not let this happen without a fight.
Everytime the right get in they have a go at Maori to distract from their tax cuts for the rich. Maori have had enough. They are not a political football.
Most Maori aren't Maori at all. Pacific Islanders make up the vast majority of the self identifying Maori population. Even mixed race Maoris/Europeans. New Zealand is more than English colonisers and Indigenous Maoris. The treaty is no longer appropriate as the population is increasingly Asian & Indian & Fijian & Samoan etc etc.
A treaty is a treaty and has to be respected. What is the point in having them if they aren't worth the paper they are written on. If you want to write a new treaty you have to do it with the support of the indigenous population. As far as I am aware immigrant populations to the islands are irrelevant to the treaty, because as subjects of the crown (citizens of New Zealand) they are automatically included within it.

Te Tiriti is what allows our nation to be what it is. You can’t codify it into law, and you can’t change the contract without the consent of both sides. It’s not just Māori appalled by this bill. It’s just trolling, and the upside is that it has united the majority against the idiot who made it happen.
"This is an exercise in shit-stirring by a minor party" Yes it is, the Maori party. The fact that you actually think they are trying to change the treaty is evidence of that. "You can’t codify it into law" What is happening now is exactly why it needs to be codified into law. Having 2 versions of a document, with only 1 being signed, that is so open to interpretation that people consider Maori kids being fostered by white people to be a violation of it is a terrible thing to continue to base our country on.

One good thing that came from colonialism was slavery was abolished . Although a taranaki tribe tried to appeal in order to keep their moriori chatham islands slaves in 1860's
This bill simply could undermine the recognition and protection of Māori rights and interests affirmed under the Treaty, impacting areas such as resource management, health, education, and governance, without these references, Māori(iwi),hapu and families) may lose critical safeguards that ensure their active participation in decision-making processes, practically in areas that Māori have a special relationship with the land, rivers, and other taonga(treasure). This could result in less influence over environmental policies that directly affect their communities and cultural heritage. • • • In health and education, the Treaty principles guarantee culturally responsive services and initiatives tailored to Māori needs. Removing these references could lead to a one size fits all approach that ignores systemic inequities and specific challenges faced by Māori, further causing disparities. • • • In governance, the Treaty principles facilitate shared decision making and accountability. Eliminating these could reduce Māori representation and voice in shaping policies and laws that affect their future, ultimately eroding trust between Māori and the Crown. although the British Crown Council has told the governor General to kill the bill from some articles (I don't know if this is verified)
The ACT party's attempt to reinterpret what is considered as the founding document of Aotearoa/NZ is disgraceful! May Maori keep up their peaceful yet powerful fight.
@Tehui1974 Yes. They did. Sorry bro. Polynesians are famous for their colonization of Pacific islands. I am sorry that it does not fit your narrative of the evil Occidental colonizer.
My impression, walking through the March was that there were even more supporters from non Mauri people. The government rushed the bill through parliament as soon as they knew there would be such a protest, to get it signed into law as quickly as possible. The rights of the indigenous people are now severely at risk. For a small country the protest looked massive.
They are protesting against equal rights for all New Zealanders, apparently they want to keep their special privileges to themselves, anyone who watched the clip and assumed they were the good guys should be aware that they are not. BBC did a poor job of explaining it.
No we are not protesting for equal rights, but to keep equal rights for everyone which is what the treaty protects. One small minority party that has 8% of vote is trying to make this about a racist agenda...it's not. They want to sell our country to rich foreign companies but our treaty protects us against these types of things happening.
Imperialist, colonisation can never be considered THE Good Guy. An apologetic approach opens the door, any strong arming comes across as repeating past ills. 🤔 Just saying……optics are everything.
Please research history before commenting on what is happening in my country. What special privileges have Māori ever been given? We were colonised, stripped of our culture, language and identity. Please explain the special treatment you refer to? Te Tiriti o Waitangi is an almost 200 year document which recognises Māori as the original sovereign’s and owners of the land. It is something that we as New Zealander’s should be proud of, the way we have lead in supporting the indigenous people of the land. Not some Bill that David Seymour thinks he can tamper with because he thinks non māori are somehow ‘disadvantaged’ or don’t have ‘equal rights’.

Seymour wants an equal and fair society that gives everyone the same rights. I agree with the sentiment of this statement but the intention behind his bill and his actions unfortunately do not align with this. Many people misunderstand the protesters as yelling and screaming that they are "special" and deserve more rights. If you do not understand what is so wrong about the bill then please answer these two questions honestly:
Has the treatment of Māori and non-māori been fair over the last 184 years since the treaty was signed?
(Tell me I'm wrong!)
A united NZ would put more value in the taking care of our people, our organisations and our environment.
The treaty is an agreement between Moari and the Crown not between one Race and another Race.
There is no way you could be that ignorant

Except that they are not. Racism and tribalism are very real. Natives can't be equal to Settlers wherever you go.

LoL i wonder what percent of Australian population
Whats wrong with a change that advocates every citizen being treated the same. Race politics is a slippery slope....who passes as a Maori exactly?
Equal rights after the colonists have taken everything. Seems reasonable.
The ACT party's attempt to reinterpret what is considered as the founding document of Aotearoa/NZ is disgraceful! May Maori keep up their peaceful yet powerful fight.
"The ACT party's attempt to reinterpret what is considered as the founding document of Aotearoa/NZ"
They literally aren't. Try reading the bill.
Of course they are - you must be stupid!
Didnt the Maori colonize the area in like thr 14th century?
No. Next question.
@@Tehui1974 Equality is a lie. Natives are entitled to more privileges even in Europe. If you go to Europe the rac1sm will be in ur face.
@Tehui1974 Yes. They did. Sorry bro. Polynesians are famous for their colonization of Pacific islands. I am sorry that it does not fit your narrative of the evil Occidental colonizer.
Yes.
No. Maori are first.
My impression, walking through the March was that there were even more supporters from non Mauri people. The government rushed the bill through parliament as soon as they knew there would be such a protest, to get it signed into law as quickly as possible. The rights of the indigenous people are now severely at risk. For a small country the protest looked massive.
Looks are Deceiving
20% maori in nz????
@@kiwitraveller6451 that are of 90% European decent
@ quite true, which shows that a great many of the colonists oppose this bill.
@phyllisahipene4906 I hope that's true and if so, never stop fighting against it.
Anyone that spends 5 minutes doing some reading knows that it is Māori that have been disadvantaged, it is Māori that continue to suffer
Then, Maori peaple are racist over white citizens? Did you suggest that tesis? Maybe Maorie are richest in NZ?
Protesting for continuing the free money train, Maori propaganda at its best trying to reinvent the treaty 185 years later.
You sound like you are totally insecure and scared, because you know after yesterday when approximately 42, 000 reported by Police protested, your lies and racist views are seriously outnumbered with no real support. That you are losing the battle running Maori into the ground and the rest of the world is watching you be so pathetic and immature.
These well worn tired old prejudiced tropes help nobody. Not even yourself.
The govt is the one literally trying to reinvent the treaty. Maori are protesting not to. I've never seen Maori get any benefits that I as a Pakeha nzer wasn't also eligible for
Once were warriors...
Thay didn't walk or march that distance...
Why would you want equal rights when you already have special rights? Vikings settled Iceland before the Maori reached New Zealand, yet they are not recognized as indigenous.
Simple really, because our ancestors were in the Pacific first over 30,000 years ago. Have a great indigenous day!
@@Taonga2u only in NZ since 1300 though - essentially a Polynesian colony
@@Taonga2u yes and you guys ate the people who got to New Zealand before you. They weren't afforded special rights though.
@@thebeast3279uh? Where did you hear that

It’s not only Maoris living in NZ.
There are other large racial communities as well including white NZ.
So why did the UK vote in favor of Brexit?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t Chinese the second biggest group now, and don’t they control most of the crime through the Triads.
but its not about all the other immigrant kiwis - its about changing a nz document diminishing Maori the indigenous people of nz - do you understand that???
Yes and many from those communities also oppose this bill. This bill is to cut the second party out of the contract so big business can move in and make money, that will be sent offshore
Offcours bbc doesnt like this.
No person alive has more than 47% Maori ancestry. Most of these "Maoris" are of Samoan/Tongan/Fijian or even European descent. Being a Maori is a complete LARP.
Māori are alive and well.
@@Taonga2u *people who have some Maori ancestry are alive and well but identify as just Maori for the special privileges being a Maori brings.
lol - said like someone who knows nothing about Maori but thinks they do. Samoan???... wake up. Samoans and Maori are different peoples. Learn some Pacific geography or history at least. Ignorance at it's finest,
OK, blood quantum ain't a thing anymore, leave that in the past where it was called out for being racist
@@thebeast3279 can you explain what special privileges they have?
