  • RUSHCLIFFE PARISH #25: KEYWORTH
Keyworth - “Key or Stone Enclosure”
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the largest village we’ve covered so far in Rushcliffe - and by some margin. This is Keyworth, which sits on a broad hilltop six miles to the Southeast of Nottingham. Once a small linear village just over a century ago, rapid 20th century development has vastly increased the size of this one, so much so it can almost be considered a small town. Keyworth was historically associated with the framework knitting industry. Remnants of that still survive on its Main Street, in the form of Attenborough’s Yard.
There are some other ancient landmarks like the church and Martyn’s Barn, but the one thing most people know this one for is its former windmill. Demolished in the 1950s, the windmill has become a symbol of Keyworth. Many landmarks around the village use it, and there’s even a pub called the Windmill too - even though its nowhere near where it once stood! The most significant expansion took place throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and now Keyworth is mainly a commuter settlement for Nottingham.
Its had and still has some notable residents including two former MPs - Kenneth Clarke and Ed Balls - and the artistic gymnast Sam Oldham, who won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
There’s a lot here. Shall we get going?

I grew up in Keyworth in the 50's and 60''s. It was a lovely place to live.
My Mum and Dad are buried in that graveyard where you ended up. Great to see that most of the beautiful old buildings have survived the ravages and realities of the modern aesthetic. Even the "Wimpey estate" doesn't look too bad now that it has some roof moss and aging.
Though I've lived in Canada for nearly 50 years and none of my relatives or friends still live there, Keyworth still feels like my true home. Thanks for the trip, literally down memory lane.

A very interesting video. There are various choices for the residents to choose to participate in their spare time. Many thanks.

Been looking forward to this one, Andy. My first job was as a lab assistant at the Institute of Geological Sciences, the former name of the British Geological Survey, working and collecting samples from the UK continental shelf as part of the offshore mapping connected with the North Sea oil exploration that was taking place at that time. I lived in Leeds then, and one of the three offices was there, together with one in Edinburgh and one in London where the Geological Museum was, now part of the Natural History Museum. In the early 70s, a need for expansion drove the plan to move to Keyworth, and I remember the organisation providing information to staff that would need to relocate about Keyworth and the area, including things like housing costs, schools and the amenities in the area. As things turned out, my interest in aircraft led to me getting a job with an an aviation company at Heathrow in 1976, the same year the move started. A "Sliding Doors" moment for me!

As a resident I really enjoyed the video and the information. I just want to point out that we have 4 schools in keyworth. Unfortunately, the video missed out Willow Brook Primary School. After the Tavern pub you made your way onto the Fairway, if you had walked to the end of this road you would find Willow Brook Primary, St Margaret Clitheroe Catholic Church and the sizable village allotments.

Willow Brook Primary is in Stanton on the Wolds.
The parish boundary runs down the road in front of it.
I highlighted this in the Stanton video - out last week.
