- 1848 was the start of the California Gold Rush, leading to thousands of men and women migrating to the area via San Francisco. As a result, hundreds of ships were left abandoned in the harbour and buried, increasing the land area of the city, but hundreds of years later, this legacy threatens the future of a city built on one of the most active seismic faults in the world.

Sounds like a terrible waste of money to sink so many expensive ships. I'm assuming some lost more in abandoning their ship than gained in gold.
It's very interesting about the ships you now own a piece of waterfront property LOL although they'll never live to see that day. Oh well

I can't believe how dumb people were back then. Why would they think it's okay, to sink a wooden ship, then fill it with dirt and build on top of it.???

They probably didn't foresee the development of the semiconductor that turned the city into what it is. They probably didn't foresee monumentally huge structures, reinforced concrete highway bridges and all that either. Can't really blame 'em. For their way of building, it was a safe and sound way to make new land.
People 100 years in the future will say the same things about us. In fact we will probably be seen as complete imbecills still burning fossil fuels for energy.
