Michelle, this is a wonderful video tutorial! Thank you to your creative hubby too. I have two little granddaughters of 4 and 8. I am not an artist. I am a Museum docent and a photographer and I am devoted to creative expression in all forms. I nurture art and creativity in my granddaughters. Like many aspects of life, one area of interest lies at the center of an infinite web of connections to other aspects of existence. I am eager to nurture resourcefulness in the girls. We live in a world of one-click buys to keep ourselves entertained. I try to avoid buying things online to do art with the girls. I had the idea of creating paper with them, which I did with my daughter when she was little. I kept the screens that I made 35 years ago! Thinking of making paper lead to thinking of ways that we will put the paper to use to create that sense of a web of connections. That lead me to the idea of pressing flowers to put in the paper. The girls love their garden and their flowers. You say in your video that once you are looking for flowers to press you notice flowers that you may have overlooked. On my walk along Lake Union in Seattle yesterday I picked some 'weed' flowers and brought them home to press. Another plan I have for our paper is to write on it with ink to give the girls the felt experience of how writing used to be for most of human history: Manuscripts! Only recently did I wake up to the profundity of what manuscripts are. Until the printing press there was no other way to copy books! I talked about this when I toured "Graphic Masters" at the Seattle Art Museum one summer. The exhibit began with Albrecht Dürer and ended with a contemporary graphic novel writer. I used the Dürer part of the exhibit to talk about manuscripts and the history of writing. I learn so much from preparing to tour an exhibit! After the girls and I have some paper to work with we will make small books. None of this has happened yet. I am in the exploration stage. I watched a number of videos on pressing flowers yesterday but each left me with questions. Your video covered all my questions: how to make my own press, what kind of paper to use, (I had wondered whether I needed something special from a craft store) and what to look for in flowers that are suitable for pressing. And I also loved the tip to press leaves too. Thank you so much for this wonderful video and your generosity in making and sharing it!

I am starting press today 😊! Have press thanks to THE MAN, mad it look so easy. I am using water color paper (acid free) for flowers in case they stick use paper or leak natural dye upcycle. Another post elder lady suggested on larger flowers you can reduce size by plucking petals with tweezer, keep with dry process, & add back... Has any one tried? Also I have kept flowers & green (clover, fern, leaves) in books over years to dry. What is best way to keep color of greenery? I kept funeral flowers very important upside down so not flat, is spray gloss best?

I bought poplar wood but it was not easy to drill the holes. It started smoking and burning in the hole. I ended up having to drill really small holes and gradually increase the size and do one layer at a time but it worked. Thus is a cool project but not fun drilling the holes.

I had some made for Bible school and we rounded the edges... Let the kids sand.... Then used Artist paper,() the thick ones... I drew the rounded pattern for the presses... Kids cut it out....then parchment to papers to put over the flowers, I also used cardboards precut to make it stronger when pressed inside. We put other pressed flowers on top... Then modge podge over it... I am going with the wood alpha bits with letters on them this year.... So they can personalize them

I love how simple you make flower drying. You don’t use expensive paper which I like. I also like how calm & relaxed you are when talking. Thanks for making this look so fun & somewhat easy. 💕
Try it with different flowers maybe? Some flowers dry better than others. I've found pansies to press extremely well and many of the colors remain the same after pressing.
