Back when Secret Lairs were a new thing, I was optimistic. I thought it would be a great way to add a diversity of art styles to the game without disrupting the coherent and flavourful aesthetics at MTG's core, while adding a new level of flair to the idea of the collection centrepiece. Since then, I can count on one hand the secret lairs that I've thought have had artistic merit. Half of all secret lairs are these butt-ugly nostalgia-bait or cross-promotional products that feel closer to "beano magazine bonus toy" than "premium luxury magic cards", and core MTG products are stuffed full of the same things, so what's the bloody point? And how many MTG players even know what "Brain dead" is? I'm 99% certain that WOTC is now the one taking money to make these products, there's zero chance WOTC thought some unheard-of overpriced clothing brand would be a good choice of IP.
I'm going to be honest here, those Brain Dead secret lairs are literally the definition of bare minimum requirements for a Magic: The Gathering card. This is not the first time Wizards has collaborated with an art collective, but I hope that after these Brain Dead lairs, it will be the last. These look so awful that they actually make the one by MSCHF from a few years ago look like a masterpiece.

I totally understand that the braindead drops are going to be polarizing, but personally I think they created a great set of cards as an homage to the over the top design philosophy of the 90s. Some elements veering in the direction of the gross out style of garbage pail kids and others in the ominous landscape illustrations on the covers of the goosebumps books. It has a LOT going on, but its all on purpose. Its not a lazily constructed set, its a highly stylized one. It may not be for you, but Id like to leave this comment defending it because a lot of folks seem to be dismissing it as a low effort cash grab despite there being a lot of talent on display.

The craziest part about that last secret layer to me is it's not even made with a cohesive theme in mind. Like, you have 3 quite weird and old school art works and then you have two literal photos of tattoos for the oher two. I just makes no sense.
Let me assuage your fears. John Hight is/was one of the best on the WoW team. Ive been playing WoW since 2005 and he is one of the few who was competent. I just restarted MTG in MH3 for the first time since Coldsnap so I just came back. This was a great move by WotC. Big loss for Blizzard.
I liked mtg because it didnt feel childish like the other card games at the time (pokemon, yugioh) but now, as an adult, this game doesnt feel at all like a game for me
Played magic growing up, quit when friends started buying 4 of's. Started playing hearthstone (blizzard online "magic") stopped playing when playing felt like pulling a lever on a slot machine. Some of MTGArena's hidden play parameters have been exposed, but it's likely to be only the surface. Hasbro has milked that cow so hard it's turned to leather, and now blizzard is gonna strip the skin. But maybe we'll get a crossover 😂 People used to play games, now the games play people. Still have love for what the games used to be, and what they could be. But ain't touching that shit the way it is now. Just watching the flames.

Huarli As a buird: As a artist I see why that is the overall team of the bloomburrow set is animals form modern times. An "birds are dinosaurs, and evolved from a group of meat-eating, bipedal dinosaurs called theropods. This evolutionary process likely began around 160 million years ago and led to the development of small, winged birds from fast-running, ground-dwelling theropods" So it make sense to make the change for a consistent set.
The sad part of this is that literally anyone who has been playing Magic the Gathering for a year would make a better president than that guy coming from Blizzards.

I really feel the Bloomburrow secret lair should've just been included in the set. They could've done like a Mouse Guard or Redwall theme'd Secret Lair to go with Bloomburrow and had some of the characters be reprints. Hell the Showcase art for Mabel, Heir to Cragflame is done by the writer/illustrator for Mouse Guard. Why not ask him for a collaboration? Perfect opportunity wasted right there in my opinion.
The bird-god thing was huge in Mayan, Incan, And Aztec culture, which Huatli's culture is based on. And yeah, all that old art showing dinosaurs as lizards is just plain wrong. Like lots of other people have said: T-Rex had feathers. Many dinosaurs were ancestors of modern birds. I'm used to you knowing all this stuff, hoser! 💜💙

They don't even bother with standard precons anymore, but every new set that releases every month ... gets a suite of commander precon decks, and all the sets have 10 times the legendary creatures that they used to. Which sucks for standard deck building in a way, cause I don't want 4 copies of a legend even if it does something really good for the deck, it could just easily be a dead card in hand. They also release commander sets along side the normal sets as if they weren't already designed for commander, but will include reprints or cards that reference commanders, but also sometimes you get cards that would be perfectly fine in normal gameplay that aren't legendary and are exclusive to those commander sets, so you will never be able to pull them from a booster pack. Jacked Rabbit for example in bloomburrow commander, it isn't legendary, and it makes rabbit tokens when it attacks based on its power, why isn't that just in the normal set?

We've gotten Ornithopter reprints SO man times, and there's so few other 0 CMC creatures. i don't know if they can reprint Phyrexian Walker, but i would love if they did. Otherwise, reprints of Memnite would be amazing. This is what i thought when i saw they threw Meteor Golem in ANOTHER secret lair (i will be boycotting). When i saw the "head lands" i thought they literally could had done this as a BEETLES crossover and called them "PEPPERLAND" lands.

None of the secret lairs really have a theme. Chaotic goo looks pretty cool if it was in an earthbound homage secret lair, and wmc maybe if it was like a Metroid set. The brain dead ones look pretty ok, I just wish that when they did land drop SLs then you get enough of them that you can use them as a land box for draft. I agree the typography is ugly.
Glad it wasn't Bobby because he would have driven mtg to the dirt faster. Most blizzard higher ups for over a decade were in an unsafe workplace scandal. I don't know about this guy.

I think the reason the Secret Lair has 2 of each basic instead of 1 is because they didn't expect it to sell otherwise.
