Appreciate your video. Worked on ranches in MT in the late 70s, early 80s. Once you started talking, memory can flooding back. It’s a lot of work, and will be worth the reward.
When I bring new cows home I expect them to walk the fence line over and over, then take a nap in the farthest corner. I do like to bribe them with wet corn mixture shaking in a bucket and get them trained to come running when they hear it. That way when they get out because someone who looks like me leaves the gate open, I can bribe them back home.
That was really informative! I am really enjoying learning more about cows. Your videos have already taught me so much. I really hope we can do a cow in the future. Keep up the great videos!
Lots of good information Lucas! 🤠 Where was your cowboy hat?! This will be very helpful to those just getting into the homestead lifestyle and raising their own beef. Our farm neighbors have cows about 2 properties over and you can hear them sounding off all the time. 🐮🐄
I was surprised to see you raising the beef again this year. Last year when you culled your winter freezer you weren't sure you would because of the cost. Are these boys Angus like the last one, or another breed that's a little more economical?
This is actually an older video. I was unable to have any this year mostly because my son moved his home into the pasture. 😊. We hope to get setup to have more next year.
. I may be obtaining a few acres 10+ for my personal home and im considering raising some livestock either for both breeding and selling or selling directly to butcher. 🥩What do you recommend would be a good starting point for someone in my shoes thats new to the game. Thanks! By the way i live in Texas!
Since I really only have enough pasture fenced to raise a couple at a time I never kept any for breeding. I just bought feeder calves and raised them to 1,000lb or so then I would find local buyers for the meat. If I had more pasture I would keep a cow and have her bred.
@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead Gotcha! And I'm just spitballin here! What would you recommend for starters? For example 1 cow 1 bull? 2 heifers? I've never owned livestock I just had the idea in my head as another avenue of income.
It is all in what you want, but I probably would t keep a bull. Simply because of the feed costs and such. You can either bring in a bull from another farm or hire a vet to inseminate your cows….
I know that head finished beef doesn't taste as good but my understanding is that if you finish them with corn it will reverse the omega 3/ omega 6 ratio in the beef.. have you done any research on this?
Random Question for Anyone who can answer it. I'm sorry to put the question here but I really don't know who to ask. I bought a house a couple years ago where the back yard is facing a field where cows are brought through to a much larger field on top of the hill. It looks like the cattle are rotated in different areas of the field. In the last couple of days the cattle have been located right at the fence in my backyard. Which we love. We love seeing them and their calves. But these last couple of days made me realize what a complete idiot I am. Last summer I planted grapes, kiwi and raspberries all along a trellis two feet away from the basic wire fence put up to keep the cows in the field. I just realized that when these plants grow this year along the trellis the cows will likely destroy them. Does anyone have any tips on a budget friendly way to save my plants from the cows? I'm hoping to avoid putting up a complete backyard fence mostly because it will block the view to the beautiful field.
I would look into running an electric fence wire along the top of the existing fence to keep the cows from reaching over. It should keep them off of it and supplies for a small electric fence aren’t terribly expensive. Good luck!
Great question! I know lots of folks that use just electric fence, but mine got out the very first day on a section of electric. (Although it was my fault because I forgot to plug it in.). After that, I built all woven wire fence and have had no issues.
Yeah, I use the pour on Ivermectin. If your wanting him to put on weight, you might up the protein. Just take it slow. If it gets diarrhea you are pushing too much.
Typically I would recommend castration as early as possible if he isn’t being raised for breeding. It makes them less aggressive. A bull will usually grow heavier and probably produce more beef, but it will be leaner. I prefer more fat. I am definitely a novice so I am learning each time I raise… Good luck!
Thank you sir I’m 55 and finally getting me some land to get me some livestock and chickens etc . 😊

Glad to find your channel. We have alot in common.
Just picked up my highland cows today.
Ooo. Highland cows! Nice! Have you raised them before?
@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead nope first timers!
Right on! Good luck! I hope you put up some content on that!

You seem like a great father my guy.
Thanks
Thanks for all the information on starting your new cows out. Looks like a lot of work but well worth it in the end. Have a great week😁👍🚜💨🍳
Thanks, Mitch! It really is!

Most underrated channel
I'm planning on getting some cows for milk. I'm glad I saw this video. I'll be sure to give them some cbd for the first few day. 😅
😂🤣
You’re going to have a lot of meat, I think you’re going to need more freezers 😉👍🏻🤣. Have a great cool weekend Lucas 🙂🙋🏼♂️👍🏻
Let’s hope so! You have a great one too!

Haha. Yeah, I usually only break out the cowboy hat when I’m running the tractor in the sun. Thanks for stopping by! 👍🤠
Boa noite amigo bom trabalho ❤❤❤

Thank you for the video! How long will you keep these two steers before you take them to the butcher?
We usually feed them out for about a year…this is our second round of them. We had great luck with the first two.
Calves are a pain feeding bottles twice a day but very well worth the effort
Bottle calves are a lot of work! It’s been years since I’ve raised any bottle calves.

Thanks for sharing. How much grain do they eat a month on average?
It will obviously increase as they grow, but if you use 2-3% of their body weight per day that will get you in the ballpark.
It's been too hot for too long. I like football weather, not sauna weather. Yuck. Anyway, you sound like a pro cattleman. Keep up the great videos!
Thanks, Logan. Far from an expert, but I’m learning a little as I go!
Thank you
Had a ranch but everything got burnt from a town fire. Miss my farm but have to start from scratch with animals and ranch machines 😢
Well that is just sad. I’m sorry to hear that. Best of luck rebuilding.
What’s the best fence that’s the most affordable for 2 calves on 1 acre of pasture?

What brand of calf starter do you recommend? There are so many.
I don’t know for certain, I just picked up a bag from Rural King. They did well on it though.
My cow had a baby bull he’s like 5 months she eats a lot gets fat and next day she skinny, ima dewormer and give her vitamin what do you recommend
