  • Join me and the team as we explore the incredible Fledborough Viaduct and station. The walk starts at Clifton on Trent station, over Fledborough Viaduct and onto Fledborough Station. Some incredible finds along the way!
    So not only do you see a massive 59 arch viaduct you will also see two former stations on this once busy line. And some surprises along the way...
    I really hope you enjoy this video and if you do please like and subscribe as there are plenty more videos arriving every week!

    I’m glad I’m not the only one that sounds out of breath when walking 😆What a stunning viaduct! One day I’ll get there with the drone 👍

      Quite a decent walk tbh! I did fly my drone for the first time! But there are power cables everywhere so it is a bit restrictive.

    Amazing structures for a railway that went from nowhere to nowhere! Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway was supposed to run from Manchester to Sutton on Sea where Docks were to be built. It eventually ran from Chesterfield to Lincoln and never carried enough traffic to pay for the expense of building it! GCR took it over in 1907 or thereabouts. It did serve some of the Nottinghamshire pits and took coal to the big power stations built in the 50s but by then the passenger service was folding up and the stations closed to be followed just a few years later by the coal trains as power generation moved elsewhere when the pits began to close. Really a sad little railway but grandly built. The steel bridge of the viaduct was replaced by a single track span I beiieve in the 60s which is why it is narrower than the rest of the structure. A beautiful viaduct that is wasting away for want of trains!

      Thank you for watching. A real shame that it never did as it was supposed to! As I have found with a lot of this infrastructure it wasnt always thought through before it went ahead!

    Oh wow how fab they actually kept the signs there! Over in Birstall my parents used to live on the road where it's main entrance is bricked up always feel sad they closed that station and demolished it as the trains still use the line there but good news about the Derby station this week the lottery is funding to restore 👏🙌

      Thanks for watching. Yes a lovely structure and it's being kept well. There is stuff everywhere that needs looking after as it's too late when it's gone. Yes great news at Derby, let's hope it starts a trend! Thanks for your support 👍

    Wow indeed!! Even though seeing this magnificent viaduct on video can’t be the same as seeing it in the brick (so to speak), your video still manages to capture the sheer scale of its size. Over 9 million bricks used in its construction, and as you say, it’s just mad! I’d love to be able to take a proper look at it myself one day. Thanks, as always, for sharing these amazing sights (and their history) with us.

    Hi guys if you go to Seaton in Rutland. It's the smallest county in the UK there is the longest working viaduct in the network. It's three-quarters of a mile long it has 84 archies .My home town is Market Harborough nice to see you guys doing it again. Ron

    Amazing viaduct. Yet again, imagine all the work that went into that. Thanks again for putting your self at risk, in getting down the bank and wading through the nettles, all for the good of the channel.

      Thank you for watching 👍 I always think of the hard work that went into these structures and how quickly we shut them down and left them redundant. I am getting use to nettles 😃

      I must admit I was a little shocked to see them nearly intact. Hopefully they will but I doubt it as maintenance of old railways seems to be far down the list at the moment. Thank you for watching

    Fantastic viaduct, and platform remains. A shame the bowstring spans are no longer there as they must have been a lovely sight. Glad it's at least open for foot and cycle traffic and not left to fall to bits.

    Mate, Fledborough is literally 20 minutes from my front door!!!! I absolutely love the viaduct and the old station, I have some great photos of both it's a fantastic walk/bike ride with plenty to see. You did very well to spot that platelayers hut, I've never seen it but looking at the angle in your film I suspect it's not by the track bed but down the embankment - well spotted indeed. I had no idea the GCR came out that way, I knew the viaduct was on the old LD&ECR line, but not the GCR, you learn something everyday if you listen to knowledgeable people. They could do so much with both of those stations just by clearing away the undergrowth, there's also a station at Doddington and Harby (the only Lincolnshire railway station in Nottinghamshire because Doddington is in Lincs, and Harby is in Notts, but it was built at Harby) which has platforms that are absolutely covered in undergrowth, but with a bit of work could be resurrected. Cheers!!!

      Thanks for watching. If I had known you were so close i would have let you know. I will be going back that way at some point so will definitely catch up. The plate layers hut is on the clifton side at the bottom of the embankment just before the road bridge. A lovely find but buried in nettles! I must admit to being a little jealous of living near there what a beautiful structure and so accessible, i wish my local viaduct was just as easy to get to! Thanks again

    That's a truly impressive structure great that you got chance to film it . Sure if it had been on the GCR mainline would have been blown up .
    The other thing that saves this was the High Marnham power station requirement for coal .
    Fascinating to see must make a trip up to see it in real life .

    • @MiddyExplores
      @MiddyExplores  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. It was saved by the power stations and the need for coal as at one time its future was a bit shaky! well worth a trip i recommend seeing it.

    Any idea how much it cost them to replace the Bowstring original design with the present walls of steel? Thanks for the trip very nice

    • @MiddyExplores
      @MiddyExplores  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I couldn't find many details at all on the repair unfortunately. It was completed in about 1964 so i would imagine relatively expensive for the amount of life it had left.
