Great vid!! I dont know much about vintage mics or new mics for that matter but I do know about vintage synths....there's nothing better than vintage even with all the maintenance.
Bro... I could honestly care less about anything else. I just felt bad like, I have all this gear and knowledge from spending 15 hrs a day for 30+ years studying this crap. Maybe I can help and reach others?? That's all there is to this really xx
I think you installed the capsule in your DIY mic backwards. Try turning it around and performing into the rear of it... if it sounds better, that will have been the issue.
Hi, the center terminated lead is on the rear of the capsule where it should be. These capsules are directional and do have a front and back, the back having the center terminated screw in the middle. I can confirm this was installed properly and not backwards.
surprisingly, an AKG C24 is not a dual C12. It's actually more like an ELAM 251, including the high-end rolloff capacitor built into a 251. The cathode bias of a 251 is also present on a C24. The pattern switching configuration of a C12 is, however, part of the C24, and that plus the name tends to make people think they're just a dual C12. /MicNerd
Was your C12 in figure eight or omni mode? Or was C24 in hypercardioid? It sounds like C24 is narrow and picks up mainly what you are recording, while the C12 takes pick up the back wall / room also.
Hi that's a great question. Both mics remained in cardiod the entire video. You are correct in your observation that the JML-12 clone did pick up more of the room but that was in cardiod as well! It loves a closer proximity for sure. The CK12 exhibits a truer cardiod response overall.
The extra room sound being picked up is the problem. The C24 sounds tight and awesome. I think the clone might sound great without all the ambient sound. Strange, considering the capsule.
Agreed - My thought is that the cardiod position is not totally cardiod. A lot of folks don’t realize that true cardiod is difficult to achieve by manufacturers and not always true. This mic has a great proximity effect when close but picks up a lot of room when you back off. If I make this video again I would demo them both up on the basket… Coming soon!
Thanks for the comment however due to the output coupling capacitor on the transformer of the C24 it actually yields a better low end response by a whole octave at -3db over the C12. Matters of opinion quickly dissolve in light of matters of fact 6:58
The vintage one has a lot more low mid warmth. They both sound great but pretty different
Sweet video! I like the points you made at the ending. Nothing like the stuff from the old days. 💪

All of this can change at man. Keep it up

Genuine C12's have a better low end than a C24.
