    Back in the 70s I had a travel tank I ordered from the form that came with a kit. It was a glass tube with a flat bottom, and a plastic top which I think had a clip, so you could put it in your pocket like a pen. I took my monkeys everywhere - to family events, to boy scouts, and even for a long day at show and tell in elementary school. The short trips probably weren't too bad , but the day at school must have been tough - I was young and didn't know any better.

    I'm gonna draw from my personal experience to say this is not the best idea for kids. About 30-or-so years ago my cousin had the bubble necklace apparatus and brought her favorite sea monkey to my house for a visit. Well, it didn't survive for more than a few hours, after which we had a funeral for it in my front yard. As we couldn't bring ourselves to tears from its mere passing, we resorted to cutting onions to provide faux tears for the ceremony... OMG to be a kid again, and not just a "man-child".

      The fact y’all felt the need to have faux tears to respect the passing of the sea monkey is genuinely really cute! I hope you and your cousin are doing well and hopefully not needing to do my sea monkey funerals LMAO

      I'm pretty sure I owned that same bubble necklace! It also did not last long. It was a really thin plastic, maybe LDPE? And it cracked incredibly easily. I can only find one trace of it online, a single scan of an illustrated ad from a comic book. So I don't think the product was around for long, probably for the best.

    The idea that all these keychain products even existed is kind of crazy. If you've ever raised sea monkeys, you know how sensitive they can be to temperature change. The thought of all those poor monkeys shoved into a bag and left in a hot classroom cubby hole is sad😢

  • @hattie302
    @hattie302 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Haha, I was wondering what the second stopper was for right up until you poured them back in! I'm kind of on the side against keychain aquariums, I don't like to put my animals through any unnecessary stress, and I feel like what a keychain goes through in a day is pretty rough...I don't think I could go through any period of time with them in a small space like that without being hyper aware about how long they've been in there and how much jostling they're going though.

Yes, not the best way to keep sea monkeys for extended periods of time😢 but i thought it was neat for just a short little stay!❤❤ and is that a new profile pic?! Love it and loved the video!

    God, I’m not sure if I hate this or the watch more. Even for 12 hours. With this I’m thinking about vibrations if this went in a pocket, would turn the air bubbles into weapons. With the watch I’m thinking of the possible temperature increase…and the vibrations from walking etc. honestly, I wouldn’t be shocked with the “The Amazing Sea Monkeys Blender! Watch As Your Soup Is Made!”
    It’s a cool slice from the past though, I’m so glad you double checked the seabubble - none of them got trapped in that hellhole.
    Bloody amazing that you got the 8 year old eggs to hatch, that is so cool, I would love to get some old eggs hatching, to see if there’s any tricks I can use to revive them, and see what the oldest eggs I can use would be…

  • @fikanera838

    It's obvious from your other tiny tanks that sea monkeys don't mind confined spaces, but these would only be getting a tiny amount of oxygen, which seems like a problem. I also can't imagine the bubble surviving long, bouncing around with keys & such, but it's cute just to see it hanging from something for a short while. Thankyou again for trying out all these products!

    I believe I bought my Sea-Bubble stand-alone from a tank insert order form. I used to take them on short trips with me. My original Sea-Bubble is missing a stopper now, I bought some cork stoppers but never tried them. I agree with you that it should be all clear,. There is a larger all clear version that has two sides similar to the maze, but both sides can hold Sea-Monkeys. I think it came with one of the pirate kits. Keep up the great videos...

    “Creepy looking family” is right. That Big Slime Toys packaging disturbs me.
    For short term incarceration, I think these devices are fine. All of the Sea-Monkey travel accessories are more of a gimmick and much less functional. I highly doubt that many kids left their Sea-Monkeys in their travel device for extended periods of time - if they used them at all. But as with most things in the world, using this requires implementing good judgement.
    I’ve had countless Sea-Monkey travel accessories over the years and I’ve never put Sea-Monkeys in any of them. But as a gimmick, these things still amuse me and get my thumbs up. (So do your videos.)

    When I was little I sent away for a moose brand sea-monkey necklace that might have been the precursor to this, since the kit suggested adding it to a keychain if you didn't want to wear it.
    It wasnt the friendship necklace design though as it was a real sphere with no backdrop
    I specifically bought it so I could take a couple of mine to show and tell, but I only used it once as by lunchtime I started getting stressed out leaving the two I had caught bottled up all day. I released them back into their tank as soon as I got home and both were doing fine, but I didn't like that icky feeling of taking them from their home.

    Unfortunately, my Sea Monkeys died despite the micro heater, air pump etc. Odd, but there were NO signs of 'bodies'. From a healthy colony to zero SM's in 4 days.
    If you shine a light through the bottom of the 'Ocean' tank it looks great. I am considering installing an led light under the base and filing a slot for the wire so as to have a separate battery and switch.

    • @pico-cosmos
      @pico-cosmos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers mate! And sorry to hear about your colony. Sea-Monkeys can certainly be challenging at times. I think these rapid mass-mortality events are likely due to a fast deterioration in water quality / bacterial bloom :/ that can be hard to anticipate and mitigate. Love your idea of modding the Sea-Monkey tank! Let me know if you ever end up doing it 👍

    The sea bubble is just a bad idea. I get they are brine shrimp but this is one step from those keychain bubbled animals he mentioned. It’s still a living animal that your shaking around with every movement you make. We got something similar over 15 years ago from a relative that was visiting from Thailand. I felt bad and didn’t wear mine but my brother did and the monkeys were dead by the next day.

  • @justicierodelaliga
    @justicierodelaliga ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Here is the thing. I´m an animal lover all around. That being said, being these brine shrimps I don´t see the problem to kepping them in the keychain. However, with this conditions:
    1. Just a maximum of 2.
    2. And, by all means, NOT FOR CHILDREN. They would be running up and down with them, maybe placing them directly under the sun, forgetting the key chain on school, risks of loosing it and/or getting it open and draining it.
    This could be targeted to actual adults that would know how to care for them.

    I mentioned on another video that I had a seamonkey-branded necklace in the early 90s (or maybe the late 80s?). After watching all of the other vintage product reviews, I went looking for it, but it seems to be extremely rare. I've only seen a single mention of it online, a pinterest scan of an illustrated ad for it from a comic book, but no pictures of the bubble itself. It may have been called the "living necklace" but I'm not sure if that was an official name.
    Compared to this keychain, is was round, nearly perfectly spherical but for the knob at the top, and entirely clear, not half blue or purple. Unlike the friendship locket, mine was a spherical bubble of plastic, with a cap on top that a bit of cord went through.
    Anyway, the idea goes back at least to the late 80s. Sadly, it was a very cheap plastic and it cracked easily, which I'm sure was a sad day for a lot of kids (it was for me). Hopefully this newer one is made a bit tougher.

    Hi John,
    Im from Greece and as i kid i loved sea monkeys although i never managed to keep them alive for too long.
    Fun fact: sea monkeys were discontinued in Greece (around 2002-2003 i would say) because our stupid politicians thought that it was some kind of weird creatures created in a mad scientist lab! Yes, sea monkeys became an issue in greek parliament. The product hasn't been released here again since then.
    However, sea monkey eggs (or artemia/brine shrimp) are sold in aquarium shops (as fish food :( ).
    Since i dont have the water purifier and the food packets, i'm just trying to raise them using himalayan salt (i will try to find aquarium sea salt if i experience any problems with it) and spirulina powder.
    7 days after the hatching and some sea monkeys are dying. My diy container seems to have a kind of slimy stuff that sea monkeys get trapped (it could be fungus).
    Anyway, have you ever done a diy sea monkeys? Do you have any tips?
    Also, i saw in one video of yours that you first fed sea monkeys 5-6 after the hatching. Is it safe to do so?

    Personally? I'd probably leave the keychain aquarium in the past. I could be absentminded at times so imagine a child having that and losing it with the Sea-Monkeys inside or forgetting they are in there and leave them for hours or even days on end. Poor critters 😅! On the other hand...I want that Purple Ocean Zoo, hands down. I want it just like I want the Pink Ocean Zoo that came with the friendship locket/necklace bubble. I don't care much for the keychain or the necklace itself (the reason for their collective value), I just want those fun pastel pink and purple Ocean Zoos for my collection 😢! Anyhow, if the keychains were to make a comeback maybe with a few design changes, like a bigger orifice to put the Sea-Monkeys in and out and also slightly bigger tank too might be favorable. I know the Aqua Maze keychain aquarium said in the packaging a minimum of 6hrs with a maximum of 12hrs for keeping the Sea-Monkeys in but it would be preferable to have in a new packaging to use in big bold letters the words "Temporarily" and "Few Hours" maybe a max time of 4hrs and to not take them to school. I admit I had mine for close to 10hrs in the keychain when I took them to work with me that day in the keychain but I was closely monitoring them all the time something a child might not really do. I do think kids can be responsible but something small like a keychain is easy to become forgettable I think. Like look at the Tamagotchis, how many of those died in the 90s because of neglect and school? Anyway, this was a great review and I'm glad the eggs hatched from the old packets! I think the limit for them being viable is 10 years, more than that and it's likely they won't hatch (from my experience), keep up the amazing work you're doing and I hope you have a great day!

    1. if i am on a budget for this how do i warm it up in new zealand with heaters of any kind
    2. how do i grow my own algae

    • @pico-cosmos

      1. Keep the tank in the warmest part of your house, perhaps up somewhere high. Tbh the USB aquarium heater is fairly inexpensive and since it’s only 10 watts it’s very cheap to run. But yeah.. there’s no super easy way to keep it warm.

    I'm not too keen on this product itself to be honest, it's a little weird and I don't really see its point. I hate the idea of a school kid hanging their sea monkeys off their bag or off their keys - that seems like the movement (jangling of keys or it swinging off a backpack) would distress the monkeys.
