King C Gillette Safety Razor Review with Better Razor Options for Beginners

- Gillette released the King C Gillette Safety Razor in December of 2020. I have had that safety razor now for almost a year. As a Safety Razor goes, the King C Gillette is well constructed and pretty hefty. However there are some pitfalls that make it impossible for me to recommend. But don't worry, I have some better safety razor options here.

What’s your beginner razor suggestion?
The Gillette Heritage is a very good choice for beginners. I'd also suggest a Merkur 34c (23c if you want a long handle), or vintage Gillette Super Speed.

I’ve used a variety of safety razors and I had a really good first shave with this razor, after having used many like I mentioned. It’s not aggressive at all, and that’s a good thing for me as I have sensitive skin. Only complaining about it is that Gillette makes it

I had my first shave yesterday with a safety razor, the King C Gillette. 🤠
As some people have already pointed out in the comments, I am the perfect example of the target group.
I was out shopping and wanted to buy another 12-pack of system razor blades for 50€. Suddenly the nice box of the safety razor caught my eye, 14€ and a pack of 10 blades for 4€.
I've already thought about switching for cost reasons, but I've never had the opportunity to buy a safety razor and I'm not a fan of ordering.
I'm bald and have a beard so I went straight for the hair and styling of the beard and I'm incredibly positive about it. Of course I cut myself, but it was my first shave and I was used to the system shaver.

Love the KCG razor. Good quality medium razor. Used with Astra, Disco, Derby. Even after 2 years there is no rust. Using BIC blades turns this into a more agressive razor.

I have kind of the same issue with my hands. After a brief stint working in a pork processing plant 25 years ago, I lost a lot of the feeling in my fingers. Because of that I tend to grip things, like razors, harder than i should. This tends to get a bit painful after a while. One thing I found that helps with razors that don't have a good grip is to rub your fingertips on an alum block. Definitely helps with gripping a slick, wet razor handle.

Another good first razor is the Rockwell 6C because you can start with the milder base plates and then go higher to 4-5-6 and not have to buy a different razor. But after trying about 15 different ones, my favorites are the EJ DE89 and Muhle R89 (same head, different handles). Thanks for the video; good suggestions for people to know about if they are new though I think the nice think about the King C is it may get more people into traditional shaving if they are exposed to it via the pharmacy or grocery store. Yes, I tried these three razors to start and liked all of them. I have not used a King C Gillette though. I liked the 6S as a beginner razor because it can be as mild as you want but mostly because it is forgiving if you get the lather too dry. The later channels just won’t clog as easily as any other razor.
Hit can a little hard to hang on to, but I'm 63 years old and it's the only one I use now. It's not a beginner razor ( there's no such thing). I love the shave I get with it.
The King C is probably still a good introductory razor. It's very mild and will get people into the hobby okay. I have a VDH as well. That one I'll only use with more than one day's growth and I kinda have to ride the top cap. Actually, that's true for several of the cheap butterfly-open razors.
For some, I think you’re right about the KCG. The VDH just feels to flimsy vs like a Parker (to me) and, if I remember correctly, there’s little to no cost savings

My shaving needs are completely different than most other men. I grow very little facial hair, to where a disposable single-bladed plastic razor shaves my face perfectly well. But my safety razor gets the most use for my body shaving. Public and scrotal hair. I’ve found an open comb is by far the most efficient for body hair shaving, mine is a Parker and I love it- but unfortunately after a few years’ use the chrome plating is wearing off in various places.
I've tried over a dozen DE razors and so far the KCG is my favorite. The knurling could be better but I have no problem with it.

Great video, Greg. I think the PAA Starter kits and the Symmetry razor that comes in them are a great option. For razor only, the PAA DOC, or the travel OC that you mentioned are also great options. The standard advice is the DE8x razors or the Merkur 34c. I think the 34c is the better option of those two, but either make fine starter razors.

Very nice, informative video. I've been using a Lord with the black plastic handle for years. The head is very much like the King C Gillette. I really like it. I think I paid under 8 USD for it years ago from eBay. It is heavy, but it lets you use that weight to shave with no pressure. I've gotten many great shaves with it. I also have a '46 3 pc Vintage Gillette that is absolutely wonderful. Got it eons ago for about 5 bucks in a junk store. I quit using twin blade plastics about 30 years ago after rediscovering the old school shaving of my youth in the '60s. I had a Gillette adjustable back then. Somewhere I lost it and went to the twin blade system. I'm glad I rediscovered old style razors.
I started with King C, and still my favorite. I tried more agressive ones, like RazoRock 37 Slant or Merkur Futur in various settings, with various blades, but none were as gentle on my damn sensitive skin as King C with Feather blades.

I favor short handled razors due to arthritis. I like the vintage Gillette ball end Tech handles, and handles from Durham Duplex razors on razor heads from Gillette's The New series, long comb, short comb, or DeLuxe. The later Tech heads are too mild for me. I really like the vintage 40's style Gillette Super Speed as well.
I haven’t gone too far down the rabbit hole with vintage yet (just the one in the video) one day maybe even a birth year razor even though there weren’t many options in 1986 haha
@@GregTardif If you like the Tech, but would prefer something a little more efficient, then you would probably enjoy some variant of The New... someday if you stumble on one in good shape at a good price.
The later TTO Gillette razors had plastic components. Full brass construction is the best aspect of vintage Gillette razors. You could honor the birthyear of a relative with a birthyear razor. Otherwise, I think you are limited to the Tech, or a partially plastic black beauty; unfortunately.
Back around 2010 ish I had a failed attempt at learning and liking DE shaving with the now infamous Micro Touch One razor, really poor quality and my face paid for it.
Back around to 2020 and I came across the King C Gillette razor, decent enough to get my interest back up but it wasn't comfortable to hold. So... I started reading a bunch of stuff on badger and blade forums and came across the Gillette Heritage razor, with the Muhle 89 head and a much better handle. Interestingly enough Muhle and Edwin Jagger share a lot of the same razor heads. Since then I have also tried the Merkur 34C which I liked.
Recently I purchased the Above the Tie Windsor with all 3 of the original plates, mild, regular, and heavy, they are switching to a new plate design. I'll start trying that one on September 1st. It's a solid stainless steel razor with a couple of handle options. Definitely heavier weight wise than any of my previous ones so this should be interesting.
I almost bought the micro touch one when I saw it the tv ads back then. Glad I just went back to sleep haha. Yeah I think the heritage is a great choice, the head is made in Germany. Above the tie is a big step up! Hope you enjoy it
MicroTouch 1 looks like a very inexpensive razor I purchased (not saying here where bought or brand name) and the razor I bought works not well for me.
The only issue i had with the king c gillette is the handle. You're right it can be slippery. I purchased a $5 handle for it, and now it's in my regular rotation.
Love it for beginners perfectly designed so safe blades are amazing. Buy it then Astra green blades or sunny or some decent blades experiment it's not slippery just don't be daft getting wet soapy hands shaving it's not hard.
I use still today a 1965 gillette "shorty"razor. Best razor I've ever used.
I love this video man, you have a lot of really good insights and I'm happy to hear them. But you need t o adjust the EQ settings on your editing program, I can barely hear you over the background music
For the price I think that the Rockwell 2C gives you two razors in one for $29. It beats out the 34C and other more expensive other brands. I am a Rockwell fan and I own the chrome 6C and 6SS. Just bought the T2 too!
Nice! Thanks for the addition. I am interested to try both the 2C and the 6S as that has popped up a few times since posting this. If I understand it the 2C and 6c are identical you just get more plates with the 6 and the 6s is stainless steel right?
@@GregTardif Yes. After trying several other razors I bought the 6C for $50 USD. I liked it so much I bought the 6S! . The 6C and 6S come with three plates each of which has two levels of closeness.
@@eminusipi is there much of a weight difference in the C vs S that you can tell? Or is the price difference just quality of materials
@@GregTardif 6C:99g 6S:118g. I don't know exactly the composition of the plated razor but I've read that most are of brass handles and zinc heads. Shave quality is equal for me but some say the plated version is slightly smoother on the face. I prefer the SS since it is solid thru and thru. If you're willing to pay $100 vs $50, I'd go with the SS but you can't go wrong with either.

I like my K.C.G. razor, so to get around the grip issues I put some rubberized shrink tube over the knurling on the handle. Works great. No slipping at all. I just liked the razor too much to give up on it. That or you could buy a different handle for it, or swap one from a different three piece razor. Just saying.
Thanks! Yes for me I can swap the handle. For a beginner,that’s just starting out with wet shaving, it would be hard to recommend this razor and then tell them to put some rubberized shrink tube or order a separate handle for it. The heritage has about the same head and a much easier to hold handle. It’s a little more expensive but you get a sweet case for it.
@@GregTardif Some people are able to hold this razor in its given handle just fine; just the fortune of not having been injured. Otherwise, you do what you find works for you.
Greg, I agree with everything that you are saying . I can not stand a long handle. The only thing that I think the video is missing is that the king c. Gillette razor is available at Walgreens and can be picked up by people that might not exactly be looking to switch over to safety razor shaving and then once they got the taste, they then start to look around and find the razor that beat fits their shave. Then reading them down the whole rabbit hole of wet shaving as a hobby, totally forgetting that they purchased the king c Gillette razor because it was less expensive than a 4 pack of their cartridge blades. I did a video on this razor too, way like way less professional than yours. I enjoy your content, thank you for your time!

The thing is safety razors like kcg and wilkinson sword are easily available in a lot of countries especially European but Rockwell, Edwin Jagger, older Gillettes etc. can only be ordered online which also includes shipping cost and custom fees. In my country I can easily get kcg for 25$ or Wilkinson kit for 28$ but if I want to get one of these better options it would probably cost double if not more
Absolutely. I made a few more videos about the KCG it’s one of those razors I kept coming back to. I think this was more of, if you have the KCG and want to try something different or are looking at the KCG there might be a different thing to get. In person, the KCG is a total impulse buy.
Your video inspired me to take my kcg of the shelf for another spin. After the shave, I decided to order a bulldog handle to see if it were more maneuverable.

At least your reason is not: King C is a supermarket razor, people who buy razors in supermarkets are subhuman plebs. Many members of the wet shaving community have this attitude. I use the King C. when I'm resting my face after exposing it to some previously unknown razor/blade combination. I am 100% sure I can't cut myself. As a collector, I am sad that many US only razors are simply not available to me. Nobody in Europe sells PAA razors. I can buy a Muhle R-41 in a local drugstore cheaper than online, but a PAA is something I can only dream of.

My favorite thing about cartridge razors is that I get an excellent close shave every time. I used to shave with safety razors starting in the early 1970’s. Not being part of a “pack of wolves” of a safety shaving community? I’ll live.

I recently tried this very razor after seeing people on the Internet wax lyrical about how safety razors give a closer shave and are more sensitive to your skin. I can safely say that both statements are false in my experience. Never has my face hurt more after shaving than using this thing and I can't shave downwards under my chin without making my skin even more sore or ripping it to shreds. Plus, it takes an age and fine motor skills to get a half-decent finish that I can get with a lazy swipe over my face with my normal razor. I'm fine with my cartridge razor, thanks very much.
@@rld1982 Double edge safety razor needs to be pressed VERY LIGHTLY compared to the use of disposable or cartridge safety razor. D.E.s require a "light touch" when making razor stroke. I find double edge razor shaves to be or feel much smoother during the shave than when using cartridge or disposables. Some day you may want to try again.
People arguing that cartridge razors are superior to DE obviously haven’t spent enough time mastering the technique. Once you’ve had a fair bit of practice you wouldn’t waste your time or money on cartridge razors…IMO anyways. Cheers!

I myself wouldn't argue that a safety razor gives a closer shave or this that n the third... just me personally; I tend to agree with many things you said actually. However things like- your face feeling like a peeled carrot+other things in that area can simply come down to shaving techniques & even prep of face(cream/pre-shave etc). The most benefits of DE are hygiene, less ingrowns, irritation & better exfoliation.
Using a 5 bladed cart, it was demonstrated to cut hairs below the skin/pore leading to greater chances of ingrown hair(s) & inflammation. Not trying to change your mind or anything. I fucked up a lot when I started with a straight razor 😂😂 going to a DE was easy & I enjoy the time doing it. Time on yourself. Not cool when your inna hurry tho! Philips one blade for that! Cheers dude
Your issues with the KCG are not mine. As for holding a wet KCG razor... rinse and dry your hands on a towel. Sorted.
I agree that the Heritage razor is an improvement along with others you mentioned. But I still feel that the KCG is a readily available decent starter razor. However, the KCG blades are... meh. It is a mild razor so pair it with a more aggressive blade and I quite enjoy that shave. Not as much as my Feather ASD2. But it is quite acceptable.
I have a lot of mixed emotions about the razor. I get really good two pass and one pass shaves but any time I flip it upside down I get pretty nervous. Thanks,
If you still want to use the KCG you can try putting Alum on your fingers to prevent slippage. Another option that may not be practical for a beginner is change the KCG handle. I agree both the Merkur 34c and Edwin Jagger EJ89 great alternative beginner options. Another vintage option is the Gillette SuperSpeed from 1948 to 1964, I have a 1950 model and it's a lovely mild razor.
Oh nice! Yeah I threw a Gillette tech handle on it. Looks a bit silly but am going to try something else. Sounds like you have a nice collection
These are my suggestions: (1) keep fingers dry when handling the KCG razor during your shaves; it can be done, so no need to try applying alum. (2) Try a different handle (like you say). (ADDITIONAL: I finally read lower down, some other comments. If you have injured your hand or fingers, and you find you must use something like alum to help with holding the razor, then do this as you choose.)
Greg you should try the lord razor on Amazon it’s under $6 bucks… I would love your opinion on that razor it’s my one and only and being it’s cheap it’s great for building beginner sets as gifts lol

Lord Blades are aren't too bad either. They just don't last more then 3 shaves in my experience.

According to Mantic59, the King C Gillette Safety Razor has replaced the true and tested Merkur 34C as the best selling DE razor in the world in 2021. Shelf presence. The head is fine, the handle is not. BTW, the Merkur 34C is my recommendation for best starter razor for boys. I passed mine over to our son when he moved out of the house at the age of 19. Finally, after five years, I'm treating myself to an "upgrade": the Mühle 89R. I took the opportunity to order the Mühle 89 as I ordered the Mühle Companion as a Xmas gift for our daughter. Really looking forward to Xmas this year.
Mark knows his stuff. He does a lot of research for those figures. With the accessibility to the KCG I would hope it’s a top seller haha. The one nice thing about it is that it introduces a lot of people to wet shaving. The 34c is a great razor. Haven’t tried Muhle razors (yet) but it sounds like your family will be shaving in style. Welcome! yes any Double Edge (DE) razors will work in the razor. One of the nice parts of the hobby is you can fit the blade to your liking. a lot of people will get a 100 pack sample pack of various blades to find one that works best for them Reach out with any questions
The head on KCG seems identical to the Heritage just different handles did anyone noticed?

Not that it's too heavy. It's where the weight is. I don't like the handle either...very slippery. It's a good shaver but I don't like the handle at all. I couldn't recommend this razor to someone (frome my experience) and say but the razor...then go here and buy this handle for it. I would rather recommend something that had the "whole package" so to speak. 😀
think i saw a website selling head replacement parts for muhle, could be a slightly cheaper alternative than buying a full razor, if one can handle it.
have you ever tried a slant safety razor, i prefer them cause you can get a away with 2 passes, one regular and one horizontal pass. I don't like doing against the grain, as i never mastered the technique and i also read some articles (not sure if true), that dermatologists say it may cause ingrown hairs and is more damaging to the skin.
I own a parker slant (which i prefer), and the merkur long hand slant 37c (they have a short hand as well if your prefer). With the exception of the blades getting dull quickly i would say max 3 shaves per blade for me, i prefer slants as from my experience they are faster and smoother shave.
I just recently picked up a filament “fakelight” from PAA I think I need to try something a bit heftier in the slant department. But I know what you mean about getting by with just 2 passes. I have been happy with the Parker razors I own so I’ll check out the Parker slant! Thank you
@@GregTardif I highly recommend the Parker Slant (or Semi Slant as it is called). Shaved with it today. It saves me one pass, as do my Merkur 37C (short handle) and Merkur 39C (long handle). So for me slants equal two passes + pick ups.

To be honest, a vintage Gillette Slim adjustable or Gillette Super Adjustable would be a great choice! You can start out on the mild settings and continue with what's comfortable to your liking without being stuck on one blade gap with an ordinary safety razor. They are bountiful on eBay and are competitively priced to modern safety razors!
I think you’re right, generally. The learning curve for a beginner wetshaver as to what’s the right one to get or right price to pay is so high, I think there are new easy to buy options that isn’t a King C Gillette.

I started wet shaving a while back and want to get my teen brother into it as well. It seems ironic to me that you can't recommend the King C Gillette razor but list 100+ dollar razors instead..
That’s misleading. I think the T2 is the only one I recommended that is over $100
I’d like a safety razor that’s extremely mild due to ingrown hairs and shave bumps. I have the “vanderhagen” thing you mentioned in the video and also not a fan. I’m considering a merkur adjustable but really don’t wanna drop that much money. 1) mild 2) durable 3) as inexpensive as possible. In that order😂 any suggestions for me?
Have you looked at the Supply SE? The Rockwell 6c or 2c might be good options. Make sure you're also shaving with your growth pattern

It seems any of the Parkers are more aggressive than a lot of other safety razors out there. You could also go with an adjustable razor and tune in your settings to your liking. Sir Greg, I will be making my debut soon with Safety razors. I have been using Mach 3 for the last 10 years. The shave is good but the blades get dull after the 3rd or 4th shave. It costs me a fortune. Kindly recommend me a few safety razors and Sir for the blades, can I buy any blades to refill once the original blades of the brand I buy is over? Thanks a lot
Any of the razors mentioned in the video are good choices. As for blades get a sampler kit of like 100 mix and match and find the one that works for you. Any double edge blade will work in a safety razor. Welcome to a better way

@@finity9316 I never tried it again man. I bought a REX Envoy and it shaves every hair with 1 sweep even with gillette blades although i like astra blades better. The Rex is machined like the Star ship enterprise. But now ive used the Rex for months ill try the KingC again and let you know how it goes. One thing i noticed is u goto have a 30 second shower first with hot water before start shaving that makes a huge difference even with the Rex.
I agree with you 100% Greg. I started with safety razors in the '60s and then went to electric, cartridge and disposables. I briefly tried a DE again in the '80s but dropped it because I kept cutting myself up. Last month I was watching videos on Norelco razors as I needed a new one and I ran across the wet shaving channels. I decided to give it another try and ordered the Gillette Heritage, but before it came I found the King C. Gillette at Walgreens. Using the included blades I got a a miserable shave and haven't used it since.
Along with the Heritage I ordered a sample pack of assorted blades, and when it came I used a PermaSharp. That setup worked much better and I didn't have any cuts, just some razor burn from using it heavy handed. I like the butterfly style and since then I've gotten two Gillette Super Speeds and two Slim Adjustable models that work well, and the Wilkinson Sword that gave me a crummy shave with their blades. I think I have a problem with heavier models with long handles as I have arthritis in my hands which can act up at times.

The other is the Jagger DE89, and yesterday I ordered one from Shave Nation. I have a tendency to go overboard when I get interested in something so I need to slow down on purchases, lol.

Interesting review. I just got one of these this week as a cheap travel razor and found that (for me) it shaves incredibly well and unbelievably even better than the Rhodium Rex Konsul that I ended up selling because that thing chewed up my under nose area ATG. This razor does NOT, and gives me a great BBS everyday shave with 2 passes and minimal touch ups. For 3-4 days growth I’d probably reach for something more aggressive but when I’m traveling I’m always shaving everyday so that’s never going to be an issue & I can leave the other razors at home. If it gets lost or stolen, no biggie. I also found the handle on the King C Gillette to be plenty grippy and never once felt like it would slip out of my hand. You can always get a better handle and that problem would be solved if it’s too slippery for you. The fit and finish is also phenomenal for a cheap brand new razor that I got for $16.95 including shipping from EBay. I had seen these in the grocery stores in the past and overlooked them because I envisioned a razor similar to the crappy Van Der Hagen razors that you often see in grocery & drugstores which would be the last razor on earth I’d ever buy. Your review and a couple others opened my eyes at what a great bargain this is. Cheers & happy shaving bro!

DE89 head gives good shaves. You don't have to buy this crappy razor to enjoy the process, stick with the Heritage.

If you are going to 'complain', be decent: use a hand towel to keep your fingertips dry while holding it. It is basic common sense - less water, less water spots to ruin the looks.

Those Razors are TIMELESS, and are ADJUSTABLE.

The razor is good. The blades suck,I get two shaves and have to change blades. Of course the blades are made in china and the box says made in Russia. I’m going to a straight razor made in America 🇺🇸

Not sure if you ever tried the RazoRock Game-changer.84. What an amazing razor and I really have been enjoying it more then my most expensive Rockwell and Rex Ambassador razors. It is legit a game changer reasonably priced and stainless steel. Can’t beat it and you could choose your handles.
