  • The Silverbird Selection is my series in which I aim to collect and review every Commodore 64 game released by Firebird software in their budget Silver Range and Silverbird packaging.
This video features a review of Pneumatic Hammers, released in 1987 in the Silver Range packaging.
If you have any games from this series that you're interested in selling (which I don't already have) then please get it touch!

I'm often amazed by your patience and how you resist swearing! I would have given up on this one after failing the jumps by the hammers a few times.

Haha, the irony is that off camera that's exactly what I'm like! It helps to have some practice runs before filming so that I get that out of my system 🙂

I had this game back in the day, and I could never figure out what the hell to do.

Even with the instructions it's not that easy!

I thought I was the only one that didn’t know.

Not one I'd heard of, but I'd moved to the Amiga by November '86. I wonder if this is the same Andromeda (a Hungarian bunch, as I recall) who did the much earlier Caesar The Cat for Mirrorsoft. Either way, more playtesting was needed!

If Lemon64 is to be believed then it's a different company - looks like both of them did a bunch of games, none of which look especially good!

Looks like an unfinished game, the coding is done but there is no tweaking, like the weight of gold needed or sensitivity of the hand pointer, or sufficient instructions for the weighing machine usage etc. It's not a bad game if you fix some of those niggles and reduce the difficulty probably.

An example of a great idea for a game but with horrendous execution!

It has the makings of being a decent game but crikey, its so fiddly and pixel perfect prevision required that it looks like its sapping all the fun out of the game. Shame really mate as the graphics arent too bad and the sfx, though minimal isnt too annoying.
Great review mate, enjoyed seeing this game as i had no idea what it played like 👍

Thanks, I think there's just too much to do in the game to make it fun. Then when you add the fiddly controls as you say any fun is sucked out of it! Definitely one to leave on the shelf 😉

Pneumatic Hammers… from the same publisher that brought you Thrust. 😉
Ahem… that aside, this is an interesting, if unusual premise, but the execution is way off. Picking stuff up should not be that complicated!

I thought that this would be a good one as it is my type of game. Shame that it plays so crap. I do like the Red Adair take on the name. Should of had a picture of John Wayne on the cover. 😀
