  • Arginine is an ordinary amino acid, essential only for growing people.
The adult organism can synthesize it autonomously, except in serious pathological conditions or traumatic situations, such as very large burns. In these cases, self-produced arginine is insufficient and therefore it becomes essential to introduce it through the diet.
But what is arginine used for? It performs various biological functions, such as the production of nitric oxide, gluconeogenesis, protein synthesis and cellular detoxification. It is widely used as a nutritional supplement, as it is thought to optimize sports performance and recovery, as well as as an adjuvant in treatments for cardiac diseases, hypertension, surgical trauma, burns, male infertility and erectile dysfunction.
Arginine is also integrated for its antioxidant and immunomodulatory role.
However, the theory that it can significantly stimulate growth hormone in healthy individuals has been completely disproved.
Let's now see how many grams of arginine we should take.
Dosages of arginine vary from 3 to 20 grams per day, to be divided into several intakes, to prevent side effects. In the sporting context, 3 grams per day are effective, while in the cardiological or andrological field it can reach 10 grams per day. To combat erectile dysfunction, 5 grams per day are recommended, while for anxiety, 2.5 grams per day of arginine and lysine.
    Who shouldn't take arginine?
Arginine is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity, rare genetic syndromes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe hepatic and renal insufficiency, and after cardiovascular events. It is not recommended in the presence of allergies, asthma, or predisposition to herpes simplex recurrences.
It is important to remember that arginine can interact with the active ingredients of some drugs. It is therefore essential to consult your doctor before taking it, particularly if you are following anticoagulant, antihypertensive, antidiabetic therapies or if you have other medical conditions.
