The World of Low Resolution Based Games

- Games that are deliberately made with a lower native resolution have been going on for quite some time. The most well known scene in this regard would be the LOWREZ Jam community, where the challenge is to make a game in a resolution of 64x64 or less. Of course though, the low resolution method can also be applied to the existing fantasy consoles, or when you make a game inspired by older generations. You can still make something great, but the main barrier is of course, being able to see clearly. Low resolution based games are an exercise of how far you can take ideas in spite of the small render resolution that you have to deal with. Small screens, new ideas.
If you wanna make a retro inspired game and 64x64 is too small for you, then a threshold between 128x128 and 640x448 for rendering is a good place to start.

Just found out your channel when being recommended the FOSS games vid and I want to say it's great content ! Keep up the good work .
Signalis runs at an internal rez of 640x360 and uses an int upscaler to adapt to a desired resolution. It gives it a really solid look, and is one of the biggest examples of this i can recall lately.
I love seeing more advanced games being crunched down into lower resolutions. It’s so interesting.
I really hope to see this continue to flourish. I miss seeing 2.5d games. Ps1 style games, Sega Saturn aesthetics, MAME Arcade games, MS-DOS games, jazz jackrabbit 2, hexen 2, etc. I'd love to see what unique things we can make with modern abilities but tapping back into around that 90's to y2k era
Less information on the screen leaves more room for the imagination - That's what it was about not so long ago.
Thats an interesting way to look at it. But in the past, it was more of a hardware limitation that made studios compromise due to what was available.
@@brokenportals True, and I wanted to write exactly that at first. I was in the mood of expressing that "experiences" these days are often filled with polygons rather than with potential for experiences.
But back then they did something similar on a smaller scale, only that it required much, much more effort and pioneering than today - Which, personally, I found magical (and still do).
Interesting that you challenged my "point" so skillfully - Keep it up ;)
Yeah I had some idea of Pico-8 but now I'm really interested in fantasy consoles. I'll check them out!
I do find the idea of a fantasy console very interesting. I'm working on an FPS in Godot, and I'm thinking about maybe using some aspects of that. I like the look of 1/4th of 1080P sprites for weapons, but also for gameplay reasons need smooth corners in some places. I'm thinking of maybe making the 3D parts of the graphics make heavy use of booleans.
I really like this channel
ravenfield w that resolution looks so weird but so good at the same time. ive been playing it on and off for two years and now im gonna play it like that 😂
If there's not already a PS1 game jam, then someone needs to start one. Everyone would have the same hardware to use, and if they limited games to one disc, the same space, but the games could be so much bigger and better. Although, I'd certainly want the constraints to allow for more development time, a month at least.
Anybody know what game is being showcased at 1:41?
The game is called Slain.
what is the game at 5:00?
It's a PS1 demake of Elden Ring. Not playable unfortunately.
