As someone who has been both a professional photographer and sold artwork I think when I trace my own photos I am training my brain to "see" things in a way that allows me to become better at drawing without the light box. It has helped me to develop my drawing skills much more quickly than I would have without it. It has really helped me see shapes, proportion, and scale in a way that allows me to draw better all the time. JMHO

I've started tracing from my adult colouring book collection onto watercolour paper. I think that's fine since I'd love to use watercolors in my books but the paper isn't appropriate (and its for my own personal use). But I'm also excited about having the freedom to draw whatever I like without the pressure of wasting my watercolor paper :)

Thank you so much for explaining the options and showing us a lightboard. I have been wanting to get one, but I thought they were all really expensive. My husband traces his own work from time to time. He's a graphic designer. Anyway, when he does this, he uses our sliding glass window with the sun shining through it. I think this would make a fantastic gift for him.

Great topic. I think tracing from your own drawings out of practicality or speed of transfer in your process is fine. Tracing was discouraged by my teachers because: 1. they wanted to discourage copying other people's art and photos as a practice for artists 2. they wanted to encourage knowledge of drawing as a way of seeing and designing first before you used the light box which develops a different skill and 3. doing your own drawings allows you the chance to achieve dynamic line quality and tone of your drawing media which tracing can sometimes flatten out.

What weight is the watercolor paper you used? I have 140# and I can't imagine being able to see my sketch under the wc paper. TY

I’m going to order this & try it out. Cricket is a little too expensive. I loved the discount code until I saw the $20 shipping 😱. So I’m ordering from amazon. Regular price $29.99 but free 2 day shipping with prime! Score! Thanks for reviewing these.

Hi M, I have missed your videos. I hope life is treating well!!! Tracing is fine in my opinion. That way you train the brain the right dimension of things. Otherwise you get discouraged and frustrated of doing really ugly stuff. Being miles off what you are trying to copy, would annoy anyone, and they would give up pretty quickly. X
