It literally never occurred to me that zebra midges are basically bare hooks doctored up with a bit of thread. I bet a dollop of black nail polish on a hook would work just the same. I may have to try that. Although zebra midges are super easy to tie, I think painted hooks would take way less time and you could theoretically do a big batch at once.
