I adored this video! Clive Barker has been one of my heroes since the mid-90's when I first got into Hellraiser and then his Books of Blood short story collection. Infact, one of big reasons I loved the new Hellraiser movie (I've been calling it a remix! haha) is because so much of it reminds me of Clive's the Books of Blood stories. Down on their luck weirdos (usually marginalized people) getting caught up horrifying situations that are so much bigger than them! I watched an interview thing where the writers basically confirmed this. Although, they mentioned The Damnation Game, Weaveworld etc it still feels very Books of Blood to me. I think it nailed that vibe, which is why I loved Odessa A'zion performance as Riley especially on my rewatch. Although, I do think the remix is pulling more from Clive's The Damnation Game more than Hellraiser in some ways. The whole Faustian bargain is a perfect example of that! When David Bruckner says he understood the assignment about Clive's work I think he absolutely did, but from different areas of Clive's work! He gets some of it, but I still think he could've upped the sex, gore and griminess (the apartment where Riley lived should've been filthy!) But I think that's just him because in The Ritual he made the freaking outdoors so clean! It's literally the cleanest forest in horror haha
I like the new Cenobite designs because they're different. I watched a whole freaking video on Ed Martinez's youtube channel about how they made them. It's great check it out!
The original Hellraiser is basically part of my DNA at this point. I don't compare the remix (yes, I'm still calling it that) and the original. They're very much separate things to me. I don't compare Doug and Jaime either. I'm just happy that a new Hellraiser movie is being made by people who care about the series. Whether you like it or not, you can definitely tell they care. I just recently watched Hellraiser Hellworld and the ending pissed me off so much. I never get angry at movies like that, but it made me so angry! The ending was overthought, stupid and insulted my intelligence. I'm not over it!
Last thing, I know this is going to be one of my favorite videos of yours maybe ever. I love Clive Barker so much and seeing him get recognized like this makes me so happy. I've been a huge of his for such a long time and his influence has largely faded a bit which sucks. With the new Hellraiser his work is finally being talked about again! He has so many amazing novels and short stories that I can't recommend enough. The Hellbound Heart and Books of Blood are great places to start cause they're so short with a low time commitment! Anyway, can't thank you enough for making this Kylie! I know I'll be rewatching this several more times over the next few weeks (probably starting tomarrow!). You did an amazing job! One of my fav youtubers talking about one of my horror idols. Better than I could've hoped. I sincerely mean that, and I retweeted the video haha

Now you got me in the mood for some 1987 "Hellraiser", and opened an entire new, heightened appreciation for the film, even more than I had before. (you also nailed everything I feel about the 2022 film - no characters, no vibes, no nothing for me). So in these regards, your video and analysis was - may I say so - indeed sexy. You do tremendous research and wonderful presentation, some of the best videos I have seen on TH-cam. It's thorough and grounded, always brings new aspects, and so much joy. Damn, this is a top tier breakdown/mini-documentary/commentary.
You showed some behind the scenes stuff I didn't even know about and I like the original even more now.
Also you convinced me to give the new one a chance. Kinda wrote it off as yet another modern remake of a movie that doesn't need one. But you made the two dimensions mixing up and especially the new Pinhead performance seem really intriguing. Although I am still very disappointed that they got rid of all the sexuality, eroticism and wetness, which you're spot on about.
Also, can we expect you to do a vid on Terrifier 2? Really interested in your take, especially with the characters, story and lore. And the gore of course cause it goes places other modern movies just don't. It also has a ton of behind the scenes stuff and interesting, funny and absolutely wholesome interviews

Excellent video. It's also worth noting that Clive Barker wrote the source material for Candyman, another effective horror classic. It's quite rare that a contemporary writer has two established horror franchises on his or her resume. Barker also wrote Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions; not quite up to Hellraiser's standard, but perfectly watchable.

The rest are a slap to the face to a hard-core fan like myself. They weren't even Hellraiser films from the start. Just detective films with pinhead and other Cenobites shoehorned in. No respect for what came before. I wish more of The Books of Blood were made into films. Hellraiser or the novel The Hellbound Heart is just one excellent story within the Books of Blood. So many great stories. Awesome video.

@@robzreelz I would've liked to see that. I'm still really hoping they do a sequel for this new version. They could go completely surreal like they did with the original Hellraiser 2 .. exploring hell even more. More M.C. Escher stylized portals and landscapes. In the new movie I was happy they continued on with those particular visual concepts during the transitional sequences where the cenobites entered our reality, .. the interlinking puzzle world. They captured that stuff subtly and beautifully with the new movie, paying homage to those great matte paintings they created for part 2. When I think of part 2, that's the stuff I remember.

I totally agree about the new movie being dry sex wise. I don't think the actors playing Frank and Julia showed anything nudity wise, but they still had some of the most intense sex scenes in cinema history. Also Frank could just look at someone and it's on. When Julia opened the door and Frank introduced himself in the flashback he exuded sexual energy like radioactive waves following a nuclear bomb. All he said was I'm Frank and it was on. You could feel it through the screen. No actor in the remake came anywhere close to giving off that energy.

Great video! I enjoyed the hellraiser from 1987 more than the 2022 remake. I have only seen the first four movies. I havent watched the rest of the franchise because I have heard a lot of TH-camrs say how the rest of the movies fell flat. I have heard that revelations is the worst one lol. I’ve been debating about watching the rest of the movies but I don’t want to waste my time watching movies that are “bad” lol . I feel like pinhead is such a unique horror icon. I loved the original, pinheads look, and the story was very intriguing. I also loved Julie! Her performance was wonderful! I enjoyed the 2022 remake. I was surprised that it was decent for the most part. It kept me interested. I agree with you about the cenobites looks in the 2022 remake because the looks gave fashion/couture lol if that makes sense. I wanted more oomf to their looks because they were too clean. I didnt enjoy Riley’s character too much. I like the way they explained the box. The 2022 remake wasn’t that bad but the 1987 original reigns superior 💁🏽‍♀️

Straight guy here. 100 percent agree the sensuality was sorely missing. And definitely not a bad idea. Riley spiraling and chasing the ultimate drug high would have been the perfect angle to tie in with the addiction plot. Drug high melding in with the distortions of the 2 world overlapping is…chef’s kiss. Beautiful idea. Bummed they didn’t do that.
PSA: Traumatized and counter culture straight men are definitely not boring sexuality. But we can be hard to coexist with.

I like the reboot of Hellraiser but I have to give the edge to the original of course for three reasons. One it was darker in tone and really gritty and you actually felt dirty watching it but in a good way, two the practical effects are absolutely stunning and the level of craft and love put into them just shows every time you watch it. Finally reason number three the shock level of it. Everything done in the original has a level of shock to it. The scene where Frank opens the box and the chains rip him apart, the scene where Frank is re animated from Larry’s blood, the first time Julia uses the hammer to kill her first victim is not only shocking it’s brutal especially when she finishes him off. It’s not conventional like the reboot it’s really hard to sit through at points but with Hellraiser even when I’m cringing and slinking in my chair I still can’t look away because it’s a beautiful film to look at.

Honestly, I think Pinhead is the only new Cenobite that looks good. The rest of them look horrible to me. Not because they’re practical effects, it’s because of the design. The Chatterer looks like a dead monkey and that character the Masque looks like it’s straight up made of styrofoam. Also, why is the color scheme all white? I prefer the Cenobites being dressed in black personally, it makes them look more intimidating and sensual than just dirty white armor or whatever they wore.

Excellent comparison video! There's something really interesting about the overall themes of Hellraiser, the way they make hedonism of, if not the, main theme of the franchise is a pretty cool concept. In a way, the Cenobites are sort of symbolic of hedonism as well as sexuality, given they explore the far reaches of experience. There's a lot of different ways that they could take the franchise, which makes it really unique compared to other horror franchises. Also, I agree that making Pinhead a woman in the reboot is actually pretty cool. Sure, Pinhead in the original film is a man and the Female Cenobite is...well, female, but The Chatterer and Butterball didn't seem to have any overtly male or female qualities. They seemed really alien and weird compared to the other two, and I'm glad that they chose that route with Pinhead. I love Doug Bradley as Pinhead, but I think Jamie is fantastic, too. She's particularly good at the voice for Pinhead. It sort of reminds me of Pazuzu from The Exorcist or Satan from Hazbin Hotel: Journey to the Light. Pinhead's voice is very androgynous, it makes her feel more ethereal, mysterious and powerful like the Cenobites should be.

@@HauntedHippie Yeah, haha. Also, it’s interesting that in the original film, Frank is even more of a monster than the Cenobites. Sure, Pinhead and the others are essentially Satanic BDSM enthusiasts, but hey, everybody’s got their kinks, so to each their own! And you can sort of excuse them because that’s just the Cenobite way. To them there’s nothing wrong with experiencing or inflicting suffering, they’re kind of the Chaotic Neutrals of the slasher genre. Frank, on the other hand, is a repulsive piece of shit who knows what he’s doing is wrong, but doesn’t give a fuck. Which makes it even more satisfying when he dies a glorious, goopy death. 😺

As they're killing together their lust only grows, and that is a very creepy idea! That was Clive's original idea. Pain and desire. I like some of the other sequels but they miss that whole sexual aspect. They forget the point of the first two.

That being said, I think Jamie's version is badass as well! I wasn't sure what to expect, especially after the last few Hellraiser movies without DB. But I thought they did an awesome job with her appearance, and she did an awesome job with the voice and just the presence of Pinhead. I loved your idea of how the 2022 version could have explored the theme of addiction. If they went the direction you described, that would have been bananas and such a fresh take on the material! At first I liked that they made Riley a drug addict, it seemed very fitting for a Hellraiser movie. I thought it would work well thematically, a character always trying to stimulant themselves paired with the cenobites who are all about exploring sensations and thresholds of pain. Sadly, the new one didn't go that deep with it. Overall I found the movie enjoyable, but it fell short in certain ways.

I'm glad I personally didn't see much hate for Jaimie. I was over the fucking moon when they cast her - casting a trans woman was just so perfect for Pinhead and I honestly prefer her version of Pinhead (sorry Doug).

Thank you for this video! Barker is my art hero and gay elder; Hellrasier 1&2 are my top favorite films of all time along with Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions- until This new Hellrasier, it’s a legit Barker film and I never thought Pinhead (The Priest) would be so beautiful, nailing the best of Clive Barker’s collision of beauty and horror, sublime! The plot of Hellrasier (2022) is not what seduced me- it is the queer abject ontology of these flayed angels that fetishized Transhumanism via queer sensuality and occult ways of being within this representation I’ve been horny for. Clayton slayed her performance and graciously usurped Bradley from his throne. I’m one of those queers that identify with the monster - in Barker’s universe we are not only monsters, but gods. Hellrasier (2022) is a religious experience!

Wondering about your thoughts on Hellseeker. I was really excited to see Ashley play Kirsty again in any form. But, do you think it was an interesting way of revisiting her character in the franchise or a regrettable use of a beloved character? My feelings are pretty mixed, personally.

After hearing your thoughts on the comparison of both Pinhead portryals, I'm gonna give the remake another shot. I wasn't a fan of the movie in general when I watched it, and I did go in with the bias of, "Jamie isn't as imposing as Doug.". But taking what you've said, if I go into the movie with the mindset of her portraying Pinhead as more of a Slaaneshi deamonette, then I might find that she was more suitable to the role than he was.
Uh... for those who aren't aware of what a Slaaneshi daemonette is; its a Warhammer 40k thing, which can be a rabbit hole if you aren't careful

Great video - as a queer person, I'm surprised myself that neither film speaks to me on any level, but I thought the remake was particularly god awful. I gained new respect for the original after seeing that monstrosity. Both Pinheads are great though and can stand on their own side by side without need for further, unnecessary comparisons.

I love the original Hellraiser, it´s one of my favorite movies and I consider it a great movie beyond the genre. It has something special, it oozes intelligence, poetry, mysticism and sex. The new film is not bad at all, but for me it is just ok, it doesn´t make me feel something deep inside as the original can.

Ahhhh I absolutely loved this breakdown ! I’m SO happy hellraiser is a queer film cause like you said , I just don’t see a straight person coming up with this idea , they would have sexualised Julia so bad 😭
Also !! I think for the remake , I would have preferred if we followed Colin since his boyfriend got sent into hell , it would have been more interesting and close the og , it would have been more interesting to see more of their relationship and like they did with Julia , they could have portrait the horny side of a gay man on such a smooth and non cliche way like other films do . Hope that made sense lol
    I love both movies tho

This was an interesting video, I've been enjoying these horror comparisons. The original hellraiser movie is no doubt a classic i love it. I might check out the new one for the fun of it but I definitely need to read the book tho.
Also fun fact my first time watching the original movie I was at my friends place who came home for the holidays and we all decided to sit down and watch it, cracking jokes and having fun with it till about half way in the movie (i think it was when Kristy first opens the puzzle box) This one person that was with us was freaking out hard. We just met them that day and they were not drunk or on drugs but they we're freaking out saying that the movie was Sadistic and we where making fun of Satanism and stuff. I can't fully remember the exact words they said that night but we apparently terrified them to the point they ran out of the house in tears in the freezing cold in the middle of no where. Found them half way down the street sitting on the corner waiting for the cops to come pick them up. They showed up and we had to bring them back to the house to grab their stuff so they got taken home. Kind of killed the mood of the night till we put the movie back on and went back to doing what we were doing earlier.
So yeah now I know hellraiser can really fuck people up lol

I like both films. I was surprised by the initial backlash about Pinhead being played by a female too. If you're a big fan of the series or Barker, I figured you'd know that Pinhead was androgynous originally. I though Jamie Clayton was great as that character.

I love both films for different reasons. I love Doug and I love Jamie. I love Kirsty Cotton but I also like that most of the characters in the new one aren’t likable. To me, I loved seeing Trevor and Voight get what they had coming. That juxtaposition against Nora’s death and Colin’s torture make what happens to Colin and Nora that much more tragic because they didn’t deserve it. I like the gooey and I like the antiseptic. I see it as two similar groups from the same place but with different agendas. But that’s just me, maybe I’m dumb 🤷‍♂️

There are few things that I think that I may have not liked. In the original they blur the lines between pleasure and pain, and the inherent warning is that you can take pleasure too far and to be careful how far you reach. In 2022's Hellraiser there is a clear segregation between it and a few other things --- and given that, who would ever elect for pain even if there was anything positive to gain? With clearly defined choices presented by Leviathan it gets less murkier, which sort of ruins the mystique in my eyes.

I love your perspectives and although I'm not gay my parents were theater actors so very open. If you like 80's gay media content I would suggest listening too a few Judas Priest songs. Rob Halford wasn't out yet it was obvious but he's the one who stared the Black Leather with Meatal Spikes and Studs outfits , even cuffs and whips right from the gay bars. So it was funny to see all these guys thinking they looked tough dressing like him but not knowing. There's a Gay Anthem song from '77 "Raw Deal"off the Sin after Sin album about one of these bars , great song . But from the '84 Defenders of the Faith album when I was 15 has two songs you may appreciate, first Eat Me Alive is a BDSM song for sure with some Hellraiser elements. One of my favorites though is Love Bites about a Vampire attack or seduction. Vampires are very sexual with the penetration of flesh and "wet" fluids. Other horror songs from them are The Ripper about Jack and Night Crawler . Just a suggestion.

I think a lot of people don’t realize that Riley was not meant to be likeable.
The whole time they clearly state that everything is her fault, her lack of judgement is causing everyone around her to “die”.
We all sided with the cenobites by the end of the film. So when she makes her choice we all know what’s going through pinhead’s head, and we all agree with them that Riley is not only a pain but she’s caused so much pain just for nothing.

Larry as the kind, lovely and caring father.

Kirsty and Larry as the innocent ones, Julia and Frank as the monsters.

I don't agree with how you mention how both pinheads play their role with the non/sexuality. For me it does not make it a factor of how they both play that role. They both play pinhead great and in their own way. Also, straight male are not boring. It all depends in the individual, because sometimes it is hard find a partner to accept you in all aspects. Personally, I love the new designs for the cenobites. I think it really played with that idea that they can’t distinguish the difference between pain and pleasure and I think that was a very smart move. However, what dialogue or interactions that were done that did not involve the cenobites, I unfortunately was not really interested

Maaaaaaan...I feel like I'm gonna be out on a little island with this because I'm not a big fan of Hellraiser at all (the original). I can definitely respect it for its edginess and for the practical effects, but I remember watching it and being very meh about it all. Being mad that the cenobites and Pinhead seemed like an afterthought. Perhaps I was expecting more of them in the movie because they were very iconic figures. I guess I just assumed they'd have more screen time. I watched the first three and never really had the need to go back in. I did enjoy 3 though, not gonna lie.
With the new one, I found myself invested in the characters and I appreciate that the cenobites are front and center. They are a presence in this movie and they feel like the villains. I'd watch this one again over the original if given the chance.

3 is a bad movie but a good time because of it. It's a fun movie ... I never much cared for part 2 other than the visuals and the score. It's sort of a mess in my view .. I liked it as a kid but rewatching it I don't know why I did.😂... The first movie is great though, .. That being said, I love the new one. Because of advancements in effect technology and the camera work I think it actually does quite a few things better than the original.
